View Full Version : Memory stick life expectancy?
Thinking of getting one of these 2GB sticks to go in my PSP and putting some music on it.
What is the life expectancy for a memory stick - will reading and writing music (or anything else) shorten it's life other than if I were using it for game saves?
Cheers

A couple of years ago, most memory sticks only wrote to the same 'cells' (like recording to a video tape - so always using the same chunk of memory) but nowadays they splatter the data everywhere, meaning the cells deteriorate at an equal (or more equal) rate. They can be written to hundreds of thousands of times, and again, the chip controller 'verifies' the data after writing to a cell, so corruption is kept to a minimum.
A memory stick can therefore have many happy years of useful life. Obviously, the more common the brand of make, the better the controller on-board - ie, 'Mr Memory' sticks for £2 may not have a decent controller (with the above toys) as apposed to a more decent one.
Guess that doesn't entirely answer your question though... ;)
The memory stick will outlive your PSP by miles, I wouldn't let it bother you.
