I have just upgraded my PC and was wondering if someone could help me overclock my opteron 165 processor. I have tried to look on google but its all a bit to technical for me as i have been out of the computing game for a while now.
I have a asus a8n32-sli mobo but cant really figure out how to overclock it. Ideally i would like to get it to around 2.4 / 2.5ghz if i can but i can only manage around 1.97ghz.
Can someone help me out and maybe give me a step by step guide or something, because i dont get all of the cpu fsb, Htt,multipliers, memory dividers etc.
Thanks in advance.

firstly i suggest you read up on the above before you carry on, as you cant really go in with looking for 2.5ghz. You need to tweak and tweak and twek.
what ram have you got? yours your psu? whats the stepping on the opteron?
even thou you say you have a opteron, not every opteron can take 2.5ghz. thats why before you have purchased the opteron you should of seen which is the best stepping for a 165.
you need decent hardware to overclock, although you have an asus, they can overclock but arent the best overlockers mobo. they are more for reliability.
if you really wanted to oveclock and max your opteron. you will need a DFI mobo, and some good spec ram that can handle low latency and high HTT values.
btw, rem I say tweaking. you need to also tweak the voltages values of the vCore, vDimm....etc... and also run superPi, prime95 to get it stable, it takes a while to tweak. took me 1 week of testing to get 2.9ghz stable.
if you dont think you can do it, then I suggest you return the cpu and get a standard one, as you really need the know how on how to maximise the o/c of an opteron,
phil
(opteron 146 2.0ghz @ 2.9ghz search for my name and opteron the this forum)
Click me (http://www.cpucityshop.co.uk/forums/index.php?showtopic=2454), its a simple guide from the place i got my Opty from. Read it, read it again, then come back with questions. I know the rest of your spec is good as you've got more money than brains. See you back here tomorrow, go read.
