Just visited play247 and priced The Rock. I can't tell whether it's the old or new version (of the DVD). I don't want to take the risk of ordering the old one even though I doubt there are any left. What's the key difference, cover-wise?

If you mean Region 2, the newer version is missing the purple "Widescreen" banner Buena Vista used to put on their front covers (remember that folks?) and is described as a "special edition", which is a laugh as all it's got are a featurette, trailer and some pop-up facts. Beware though, it may be single-sided but it's still cut by 15 seconds.

If you're talking Region 1, the new Criterion version has a plain black cover. It costs a bit more too. Really, if you want a decent version of the film, you should either get the Criterion one or import the uncut Region 2 version from Europe.

And also, R2 will probably have a re-releease next year with the same extras as the criterion disk... as it's just been certified on BBFC's site :)

Some good tips there. I'll see what the new year brings. Thanks for the replies.

Crits are out of the question for me, unless I can face owning a disk I can only watch on the PC. My Tosh is R2 only. Sad, but true.
