I think I'll read it after I've seen the film on Thursday. :)

For once, I'm actually sorry I disagreed with you; I was looking forward to the film quite a bit, but it proved to be rather a disappointment for me!!!
The Good:
Great casting, some great performances, some fantastic effects, lots of fights, I liked the soundtrack, cool Balrog, the list is long but I will stop here.
The Bad:
Three letters CGI some of the shots did not work for me at all. The technology employed for making them all different heights mostly works well but sometimes it just screams composite shot with everyone cut and pasted in but that a small thing. One fight scene you'll know when you see it was less than convincing but don't be down hearted 'cos the CGI Gollum was pretty good,
Changes to the story and characters are unavoidable in making film adaptations but my biggest dislike of the film is what they have done to Arragorn.
He was a tough, proud man striving to regain his heritage and in the film he is self doubting and lacking his edge
Damn fantasy cliches that are in all fantasy films and art deco elves, that is my bad list over I think.
Now let me say that I couldn't imagine any other way to do the film than they have, it is well paced I thought and it was entertaining for the whole three hours and I could have happily sat another hour watching more though my ass was sore by the end.
There were many wonderful things about this film throughout and I want to see it a few more times at least, but it totally failed to engage me. Maybe after seeing it again I will like it more, but for now all I can say is I thought it was a good film, not great, not the best film ever made but good.
I don't know if reading the book helps or hinders enjoyment, it makes the story easier to understand but it also annoys you because you know whats wrong.
The audience were a mixed bag, who overall were I think unimpressed.
A lot of people came out confused at the end loudly shouting is that it whats going on, what happened did I miss the end etc.
Obviously people who have not read the books and didn't know what to expect.
Behind me there were a group who had read the books and had come to hate the film. They talked loudly all the way through only breaking off from there conversations to moaned like hell about the differences between the film and the book. Sad gits.
So a good film I am very much wanting to see again as there is so much detail to take in - but do not go expecting to see the best film ever made.
