Hi

We've got loads of problems with DVD's jumping and sticking on our Samsung 709, even brand new couldn't possibly be scratched ones. I've read that there's a firmware upgrade available that may resolve this, does anyone know how you get hold of this? I bought it from that nasty Tempo lot who are now going swiftly out of business so not much point going back to them.

Does anyone also know or can recommend a good cleaning system - bloody thing could just be dirty I suppose?

Look forward to hearing from anyone who's got experience with these systems. Don't want to have to buy a new one already.

Sam, go to www.709online.com
There's a guy there (Spit or something) that does upgrades for a fiver - he's fast and reliable. You have to locate and remove your own firmware chip tho which can be a bit scary!

Another Samsung problem is that they are prone to overheating (I know:rolleyes: ), maybe if you have it squeezed into a cupboard with your VCR or amp it might be an idea to pull it out and put on a flat surface and try a few of these problamatic discs then (just a suggestion:) )

I've had similar problems on occasions and with new discs I've given them a clean and bingo problem sorted. Strange to think that they can be a bit temperamental like that but if it works always worth trying.

I had a Samsung 709 and I loved it. But gradually, it started playing less and less discs; some discs crashed it (Beastie Boys Criterion), and I was generally very unhappy.

So I took it back to Comet, and they upgraded the firmware, cleaned the laser, and it still was just as bad.

I (eventually) got a refund. Part of the problem is that the Samsung doesn't have enough RAM for certain discs (only a few mind you). Another problem (as already mentioned) is that it is prone to overheating. And near the end the player wouldn't even look at a disc that had even the smallest of scratches or fingerprints.

I now have a Pioneer and it has never once given me a problem with any disc.

I wish my Samsung was more reliable, because it was a lovely machine, but I get much better picture quality with my Pioneer.

(sadly, after getting rid of my Samsung I have thought of loads of mods I want to do to it; using arctic silver epoxy and a heatsink on the main chips and maybe an extractor fan on the back...)
