Oh so many to chose from but if I was threatened to be hung, drawn and quartered I would plump for.....

Moulin Rouge R1
Monty Python and the Holy Grail SE R1
Die Hard Ultimate Boxset R1

closely followed by Shrek R1

So many good discs from this year to choose from; top three off the top of my head:

In the mood for love (French R2)
The Road Home (R2)
Sullivan's Travels (Criterion)

Those are the ones I've watched; my lamentably large list of unwatched DVDs from this year that I am sure will be worthy of this list includes:

Akira tin (R1)
L'avventura (Criterion)
Obscure object of desire (Criterion)
Playtime (Criterion)

... oh, the list goes on and on...

This is just too difficult. I guess,

Gladiator
Last of the Mohicans DTS
Amores Perros

but there's also TPM, Requiem for a Dream, . . . . the list is sooo long really

How quickly the year has passed!

I'd say the three essential purchases for this year are:

Shrek (R1)
Lawrence of Arabia (R4)
Thirteen Days (R1)

Citysmith
19-12-2001, 19:30
Godfather trilogy
The Sopranos (season 2)
Twin Peaks (season 1)

That's off the top of my head, without including Simpsons season 1, or any music titles, Fire walk with me, I'll stick with the 3 I have

Godfather Trilogy
Godfather Trilogy (incase the first set goes missing  )
Kubrick set

But that misses out Almost Famous Bootleg, Platoon SE and loads of other goodies :)

Single purchases?

That'll be Stingray, Captain Scarlet and Blackadder: the Complete Collection.

Single movies or discs?

The Rock, Big Trouble in Little China, Citizen Kane.

It's a meaningless list anyway, I've bought 150+ discs this year, none of which I regret - therefore they're all essential (to me).

Shrek
Almost Famous Bootleg cut
Army Of Darkness (Just cus it's a class film and you should buy a copy every year!):D

Tricky, because it's been a damn good year for DVDs. If we're just going for single films- thus ruling out <i>The Godfather</i> trilogy and the Kubrick boxset, my choices would be:

3. <i>Almost Famous</i>: Untitled. Perhaps the best example I've seen yet of where a director's cut has turned a good film into a great one, by adding depth, shading and detail and finally making it work on an emotional level. Some excellent extras as well, and a fantastic commentary track, which is up there with PT Anderson's dissection of <i>Boogie Nights</i>.

2. <i>Monty Python and the Holy Grail</i>. A great example of just what care and planning can do for a disc, with some fantastic extras, as well as the 'director's cut' (with all of 24 extra seconds) of the classic film, complete with all the usual bells and whistles.

1. <i>Moulin Rouge</i>. See my sig for full, pretentious dissection of the film and the disc, but suffice it to say that I love the film, and it's got the disc it deserves.

Cap'n Al: You're right, it's been a great year for DVD, but I've got a feeling next year will really be the best year for DVD. Srating with Cape Fear, A.I and Sixth Sense in January :) There are thousands of rumours about all sorts of s.e's of films next year that people have been asking for, for ages! Maybe Criterion will even do a few more hitchcocks, apart from spellbound which is already slated for january... and we;ve got:

Indie Jones,
Back to the future trilogy,
Dracula se (to round off coppoll'a films all having great dvd treatment pretty much)
Die hard on region 2,
loads of old classics that WB are taking out of dusty cupboards and giving fresh transfers for 2002
mgm doing loads of old titles
and much, much more! Maybe star wars if we're lucky? :):):) I think from here, the dvd industry can only get better, until they've done good s.e's of ALL the old, great classics, and that does include 5 disc box sets for EACH and EVEREY Hitchcock film, apart from of course Rear Window, which deserves 10 discs full of extras :) ... lol and shqwshank, green mile are rumoured for 2 disc sets next year :)

Moulin Rouge - Best film of the year on a first class disc.
Citizen Kane - One of the finest films ever, on a first class disc.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - Great film, and yes, on a first class disc.

That would be my top purchases, off the top of me head.

I personally can`t wait for next year. So many good releases coming out. In the first few months alone, theres enough to send me bankrupt. And the icing on the cake for me is Back To The Future, out in August I should hope.

I'd have to go with:

Suspiria Limited Edition R0
Almost Famous ( Bootleg ) R1
In The Mood For Love (French) R2
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon R3
Moulin Rouge R4 ( even though I don't like the film, it's a damn good disc )

It's more than 3 but there have been some exceptional discs this year, and I didn't even mention Monty Python and the Holy Grail or Citizen Kane 60th Anniversary....oops, just did:D

1. Moulin Rouge
[Everything a 2*DVD set should be... great film, great audio, great image and incredibly comprehensive extras. Fantastic... can't wait to see Romeo & Juliet get similar treatment]

2. Shrek
[Perfect image quality, film in both W/S and F/S, good commentary track, good sound, good extras.]

3. Godfather Trilogy Box Set
[Speaks for itself.]
