View Full Version : Real Madrid v Arsenal - Whos the more English team?
Just thinking about this.
Will this be the first time that a team from another country has more players in its squad from there opponents country than they do?
In simple terms Real Madrid will have more Englishmen (2) in its squad than Arsenal (0).
Now as a “neutral” supporter from England who should I want to win for this one then?
Arsenal are the English/British side so I want them to win.

All ready mentioned in the Arsenal Thread
Its a bit off, but people have said that about us for a long time. It didn't bother us before and it wont now. Cole, Campbell and Gilbert are all injured throw in Walcott and thats 4 English players who play or will regularly for us.
Add Hoyte on loan at Sunderland, Bently, Pennant, Stokes and Cregg theres a few more British players on the fringes of the first team squad or who have come through our Youth Team

Sorry it was not meant at a pop at the Arsenal & I know that if fit Arsenal would have at least two English men in there first 11.
Just that its a very strange situation with the " Spanish" side fielding more English players than the English side, & I just cant think this has every happened before.
Mind you I suppose we could also debate about how Spanish is Real Madrid ;)
Days like these I think its a real shame about what the EU has done to football. :(

With Cesc and Reyes we have two Spaniards playing for us
How about the more important question of where the hell is widescreen? God damn ITV.
Not ITV's fault. Up to the Spanish broadcaster if they have the match available in widescreen. Same reason that La Liga on Sky Sports isn't in widescreen.

It's amazing how many times this comes up during a match in Europe

Cant believe somebody let McMoist and Townsend on the touchline at the Bernabau!! I was hoping we had seen the end of them.
Even my mum said they look like prats.

Gonna be fun next season. All that glorious HighDef prem football, then off to the biggest club cup comptetion in the world in crap-o-vision.
Caught a bit of the match, what was up with Pleat and Drury's pronounciation of players' names?

Bently and Pennant have both left, both there loan deals were made permanent (Pennants was a year ago!).
Stoke and Cregg are both Irish, there is a real lack of English talent coming through from Arsenal, its one thing to have a first team squad filled with foriegn players but when the majority of the reserve and youth teams are non British there is a problem, especially with new Uefa rules coming in a few years.

But how long do we have to wait for the widescreen feed.
It can't be that hard for ITV & Sky to say "give us widescreen".
Everytime we import foreign sports television we never get a widescreen feed. :oh-hum:

LOL. An Arsenal fan who doesn't know about his own players

Uefa rules will class Republic of Ireland players as "Homegrown" and if you look really carefully at my post it says "on the fringes of the first team squad or who have come through our Youth Team"

You also still believed Pennant and Bently were your players :n0rty:
Yeah but there are very few on the fringes I am afraid
EDIT: Sorry for laughing, you could understand not being concerned about Bently or Pennant

We developed them and they were not upto the standrd deemed acceptable by Arsenal, are you saying we should keep average players just to be seen as an "English" team or will the game be server better by these players going to other clubs and playing regulary?

Who cares about Uefa rules, the OP questions was about English players. You thought some of your players are English when infact they are Irish. You also failed to realise Pennant was sold over a season ago. LOL. When did you start supporting Arsenal: during their season unbeaten run?

Krayzk brought up the Uefa rulings and at no point did i say that Pennant or Bentley are still our players what i said is that these players came through out youth team.
Edit, speaking of the OP he said there was no Enlgish players in our Squad, what about Walcott????

Why? :?:
As for people asking which team they should support - the answer is very simple. If English sides do well in Europe then we get to keep all our Champions League and UEFA Cup places. On top of that - the performaces of a country's clubs in Europe country has an impact on how clubs are seeded for draws such as the Champions League.
Therefore you should support any respectable English team. If there is a team you especially dislike then the best case scenario would be for them to be knocked out by away goals (or goal difference in the group stages)
No mention of ownership in this thread I notice - presumably the OP refuses to support Man U for and Chelski for being Russian / American owned? (and Hearts, Portsmouth etc)

The sooner there are some quotas regarding home nation players the better, how can an Arsenal fan identify with that team when there was only a sub who was English?
