Now I've bought all my kit I need a AV stand for my DVD player, AMP, VCR etc, only really needs to be a 3 shelf jobbie anyone reccomend a decent AV rack which doesn't cost a fortune, I've seen hifibitz doing a 5 shelf Sonus Eclipse for £170, but still it bit too costly for me really.

Amy ideas?

I have just purchased a Magiker from Ikea which is superb and was the only AV cabinet/rack that could hold my stuff (including racks costing 500 quid).

Having said that, for just three pieces of kit, you would do well looking at the Atacama range that Beyondhifi stock at good prices. Checkout the bargain forum for their forum link.

Hi Just - thanks for the info, just checked it out but the cherry wood would not go with the other decor in the lounge, would prefer black or maybe a silver AV stand, it doesn't need to hold the tv, just the Amp, DVD and VCR players so really doesn't need to be that wide either.

Thanks for the info anyhow.

Beyond Hifi (http://www.beyondhifi.net/) and Hifi Store (http://www.hifistore.co.uk) might be worth a check

Think i'm gonna attempt one of these Flexy racks (or may do the plans/buy the bits and give it to me old man to build :D) , but can anyone recommend some material suppliers, particularly for the threaded rod as it doesn't seem to be so available over here as it is in the states. Not in the larger sizes anyway.
Is there any uk web sites with any of this info on it?

B&Q do the threaded rods, but only up to 12mm, and they are usually in short supply (at least at the Warrington B&Q Warehouse anyway).

Yep I'm going to give these flexi rack things a go, printed my material list off and going to go to B&Q see if they can help me out, can just imagine the wifes face when I tell her that instead of buying one of those lovely racks that I've shown her pics of, I'm going to make one out of MDF instead, (Handy Andy stylie!!!!!!)

re: the threaded bolts -

B&Q sell 1m lengths up to 12mm thread size which is sufficient for a hifi rack (mine's a 5 shelf rack). For an AV rack I got 3/4" rod from Do It All who sell it in 3 foot lengths. (mine's a 3 shelf AV rack carrying my 75kg TV & 17kg centre speaker!!)

Oh and just get B&Q to cut up a 8x4 sheet of MDF into equal chucks (6 I think for a hifi rack) - far easier than doing it yourself.

Thanks for replies guys, am gonna have a look round locally and see whats about. Have found an online supplier tho http://www.jhoward.co.uk/main.htm god knows what he'll charge for p +p but something to keep in mind for a last resort, although they do do diameters up 1 inch (M24) and also in stainless steel for not a lot more than the zinc plated stuff.

I'm just about to make a Flexi, but where can you get spikes for the bottom of the rods? Do they sell those in B&Q/Homebase etc too?

Cheers.

You don't need spikes. B&Q sell heavy furniture floor protectors, they're like deep plastic cups with a teflon-like (ie slippery) underside - I just slipped one on the bottom of each rod, can now slide my racks in and out with ease on my lammy flooring. :p

My local B&Q only has MDF in 18mm thickness, is that what you people are using?

Also, the nuts and washers for the 12mm rods only come in packs of four  and so they'll cost about £30 in total, does that sound about right, or does somewhere sell them in bigger packs?

Cheers for any info.

Yep 18mm sounds about right.

As for the nuts & washers look for the trade packs, rather than the 4x packs.

Cheers Baps, we did have a good look round for trade packs (B&Q Warehouse) but they only went up to 10mm, and they had very few of those so maybe our one doesn't stock the bigger packs of the 12mm. :brickwall .....oh well I'll keep looking......
