Sounds right up my Strasse or whatever street is in Japanese. I think there is some interesting music coming out of Japan, just a pity most of it is pretty difficult to source. I'm a big fan of Shonen Knife by the way. Anyone else had a bit of a listen ?

  Wow, what have I been missing, this is way different to how I imagined they would be. This could be termed stoner/sludge rock but it really would not reflect whats going on with this band. I think this is truly home grown Japanese inspired music using western influences, but ultimately its own music.

Imagine MBV walls of distorted fuzz guitar, great high rise slabs of it like Tokyo office blocks, but instead of it remaining as pure soundscapes theres a rock element moving around inside like something trying to escape the shapeless shroud of sound and suddenly its incredibly heavy, slow and sludgy like early Melvins albums but with a different feel, theres a straight vocal (obviously in Japanese, but it really doesnt matter, if you heard it you would swear it was a straight western voice singing English lyrics). The drumming is superb and the lead guitar is ace, cutting through the dense mix like a light sabre and rising like the sound of a jet engine at take off, magic.

I suspect this is what it might have felt like inside Jimi Hendix's head during one of his trippy gigs. All those wild guitar leads which just reek of emotion and those sudden inspired riffs. This album is truly a magical place to be. Be warned, it is not an easy listen and will demand a lot of time but the effort is worth it, it will also test your hifi system to its limits !!

Normal jewel case packaging for those who like to know about such things and a big wad of acid blotter paper (without the LSD of course).

This album is a tad difficult to get hold of as it is a Japan only release, it is available in CD or heavyweight vinyl. I bought mine through Ebay.

I'm still kicking myself for not going to their gig when they were in town March last year. I didn't know them very well back then so I decided to do something else that evening.... They were touring with Sunn0))).

It was only when I heard a couple of tracks from their new album Pink a couple of months ago that I realized what a horrible mistake I made! This album is insane, it rocks in all the right places! I decided not to import from Japan (because that would be quite expensive, especially the vinyl is doing insane prices at the moment) and get the US release instead. Unfortunately the US release turned out to be a little bit later than expected but in March Southern Lord will finally release it. I'm hoping there will also be a vinyl reprint.

Yes, the Jap import was quite expensive. I decided against the vinyl at mega prices.
I am having difficulty awarding this album an out of ten status as they dont fit with convention. Probably a 6/10, but its difficult to judge.

It's a very fine album indeed and really captures the different facets of Boris.

I made a mistake years back when I got a Boris album for review and wrote them off on the strength of that one album. In fairness, it was their "Absolutego" album, so a wall of drone.

Have made amends recently by picking up "Pink", "Heavy Rocks" and "Akuma No Uta" all of which are excellent.

On the subject of SUNN0)))) I saw them play with Earth recently and thought they were pretty terrible. The musical equivalent of Tracy Emin if you ask me. I swear they could release a record called "This is Terrible and You're a Fool if You Buy It" and so long as it was limited to less than two-thousand on coloured-vinyl it would sell out in a matter of hours. Earth however were excellent I thought, the trombone in music that heavy was an inspired touch!

My current darling in the related field is Earthless - ex-drummer from Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, Clikitat Ikatowi, Sea of Tombs with Nebula's guitarist and Electric Nazarene's bassist playing massive 20 minute songs of riffs and solos. Totally rocking but pretty hypnotic!

just got a boris tshirt off ebay, i thought it was supposed to be purplish (it features a picture of a guitar/bass player surrounded by mushrooms), anyway it is silver, anyone know if the official shirts are silver or purple?

great lp, i've had a few cracks of winning the vinyl on ebay but $100+ is a lot to pay for 2 pieces of plastic and a pretty looking box.
