D'oh i was gonna post Battle Royale. I've only just finished watching it again. This time in glorious DTS. I'm sure i heard my Dad swearing at me from downstairs.:D

Hmm, DVDs better than region 1............... out of my collection i would say. Armeggeddon 2 discer or From Dusk 'till Dawn 2 discer. Everything else i own is probably better on R1. I don't have any R4 but i'm looking to get Moulin Rouge and Mummy Returns.

Penguin, you do realise there is going to more temptation to buy more discs now don't you?:D. I already got my eye on a few R3.

I'm sure you'll love multi region heaven anyway.:)

The R2 Summer Of Sam (Spike Lee film) is 10 million times better than its R1 counterpart. Good film too.

I think the R2 Traffic has more extras than the R1 - cheap as well.

R2 - Spaced, The League Of Gentlemen and The Blue Planet, plus the Japanese disks of Kiki, Totoro and Tombstone for Fireflies.

R2 "Nightmare Before Christmas: SE" is anamorphic but no DTS track.
R2 "Scarface" is anamorphic and (so I've heard) a much better print than the R1

Check out the Hong Kong Legends range ("Iron Monkey" is indeed a beaut)

Have got "Shaolin Soccer" on order so hope to be recommending it soon! But will it be here for Xmas. Gasp! :)

Indeed I do!! :D

I have a few of the ones mentioned on R1 already :(
A Nightmare Before Xmas I am getting along with From Dusk Till Dawn for £10 each (GF works at Disney and gets a big ol discount!), unless anyone can find em cheaper!?

Will have to read up on all this HKL stuff me thinks!!

In what way is the R2 release of The Dish better? I have the R4 version and from looking at teh details posted on Black Star's site, the R2 appears to be pretty much identical.

i think R2 of The Dish has an extra interview with Sam Neill. so it's not much. R4 is probably cheaper :)

Yes, I can live without the Sam Neill interview... especially when it is $36.95 AUD compared to 18.99 UK pounds which equates to $53.69 AUD on current exchange rates :)

Oh yes, and on worthwhile titles for the original poster to consider:

Region 2 (Japan):

Japanese titles -
Party7
Shark Skin Man, Peach Hip Girl
Swallowtail Butterfly
Owl's Castle
Samurai Fiction
Kiki's Delivery Service
My Neighbour Totoro

Non-Japanese titles released in Japan -
State of Grace
The Straight Story - Collectors Edition (DTS)
The Secret Adventures of Tom Thumb
Cry Baby
Wild at Heart

Region 4 (Australia):
Himalaya
The Dream - with HG Nelson and Roy Slaven
Best Bits of the Late Show - Champaign Edition
Mullet
Long Way to the Top (Story of Australian and New Zealand Rock and Roll)
Live at the Basement - a number of DVDs featuring Australian musicians such as mark Seymour (ex of Hunters and Collectors), Jimmy Barnes, Revelators (featuring Joe Camellari ex of the Black Sorrows and Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons) etc etc

It just so happens that someone has gone to the trouble of providing links to reviews of all the HKL titles here. (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=31757)

Also, most of the titles are on sale at £10.99 here: Play247 HKL Sale (http://www.play.com/play247.asp?page=promo&r=R2&id=10) & Under£18's HKL Sale (http://www.under18.org.uk/medusa.cfm?1=i).

Someone else has mentioned this but just to add -
The R2 release of Scarface ****** all over the R1 (not literally coz that would be weird).
Also, its about to be re-released with a butchered soundtrack by JayZ so its best to buy now before the "pure" version goes OOP.

WOW, there are loads of HKL discs!! Where to start?!?!?! What ones are best?

Ok, Battle Royale arrived today (along with F&F) which is cool
Why are the covers slightly bigger than other regions though!? They are snapper sized amrays
Also, I like the way the disc is held inside (with no chance of it comming loose) but this means no insert thingy for chapter selections etc :(

Anyhow, back on subject, thanks for all the input so far guys its been helpful so far. Just got to go read a million and 1 reviews of HKL stuff now!!

i've got 50 or so universe discs and none of them have come with inserts. no big loss in my book, especially now the recent ones as you say come with the special case that makes sure they don't get loose and rattle during transit from the other side of the world. universe discs have always come in cases slightly larger than amarays, the main reason i guess is that due to the price of the films (as low as 2 quid for the universe porn), they use proprietary cases that are far cheaper than the branded equivalent.

as for reccomendations for hong kong discs, i canonly go along with battle royale, shaolin soccer, audition and the isle. only shaolin is anamorphic, the rest being letterboxed, but the very low price (i get mine from ddd house (http://www.dddhouse.com)) more than makes up for it.

the erotic ghost story series is enjoyable, as are the chinese torture chamber story ones, and they're cheap, around 4 quid or so before delivery.
