They are threatening to traffic manage my connection unless my usage is altered in the next 2 weeks.

Now I've always been very happy with Pipex. Their service has been very reliable. However I am a heavy user paying 24 quid a month for a 1 meg line (don't think mine gets higher)

Can I get a good service elsewhere - genuinely unlimited for around this price or less?

Any thoughts welcome

How much were you using? I ask as I'm with Pipex and download quite a lot but have not had an e-mail.

Well I don't have any proper measurement system - I estimate 3 gig down - 1 gig up per day.

That works out more than me per month. I've never added mine up but it must range between 30 gig and 60 gig a month.

Interesting. I can often download 1 gig a day, sometimes more sometimes less. I'm probably safe.

I recall hearing that it's more to do with the time you're downloading. If your connection is maxed out from 5pm-midnight you draw their attention more.

I'm aware that Pipex aren't the cheapest - I'm paying £23.44 per month for 1 meg. So for the price, it should really be unlimited and untraffic-shaped.

I think people who have a 'genuine' case for this level of traffic are going to have to accept that they will soon need to pay more for the level of service they require. The majority of home connections are going to become limited / managed I think.

3 Gig a day is a quite a bit though..

Go Pipex! I'm on the internet all day long, I use it for all my surfing, business e-mails, maintaining and uploading my website and I never use more than 2gb per month.

If people want 90GB a month of bandwidth, they should pay for it and stop slowing my connection down.

Of course, cynics might suggest that anyone using 90GB per month doesn't like paying for ANYTHING!

It's funny to see people are FINALLY beginning to agree with what I've been saying since ISPs started having to managed heavy users to keep QoS for everyone. Regardless of what the connection is being used for, if you're downloading data that's way in excess of the contention ratio that your service is provided at, then you need to pay for a better service. You can't expect to get a commercial grade product (ie no contention) for consumer prices!

Easiest way is to download a little app called Netmeter http://readerror.gmxhome.de/

It just sits in the background counting your usage. I installed it when I was wondering about moving from Pipex unlimited to a faster capped connection and it's so unobtrusive, I've never bothered to remove it.
