Can't get e-mail, or even see their homepage.
Anyone else?
I can't see their homepage either.

Not just me then - cheers Alan.
My site is hosted with 34sp and that and my related email has gone down, so i'm guessing their servers are down.
Snap, my reseller account has disappeared, as have some individual hosting accounts I still have. Very rare for there to be any trouble, hope they get it fixed soon.
http://status.34sp.com/ is working :
"We are currently experiencing problems with our core network. This problem is being investigated at this time and we hope to resolve the issue as soon as possible."
as of 3pm

That would explain the disappearance of my sites then!
Cheers Roddy.

It's worth keeping an eye on that status page, sometimes saves bothering them with an email. Nice to see they were 'upgrading' stuff a couple of days ago and now it's broken - kind of thing that I usually do myself.
I have mixed feelings about this. If it doesn't get fixed soon I can't work on a client's site tomorrow, so I get to have the day off. However, I'll lose Adsense income from my own sites. Dilemmas, dilemmas . . .

Up and down like a tart's knickers at the moment. Sort it out you muppets.
I've had some e-mails now 3 or 4 times, spaced over an hour apart, and anything I send isn't getting there, nor is anything sent to me getting here.
Quite irritating as I'm waiting for contact from a client about a commission.

Latest from their status page:
The problem has re-occurred. At this time it looks as though we are being subject to a DoS attack and are doing all that we can to mitigate its effects.
Slightly disconcerting that it took them almost 6 hours to work that out....
Month later and they seem to have died again. From status.34sp.com -
"We are currently experiencing a full network loss at the data centre and have called an engineer to attend to this immediately.
Apologies for any inconvenienced caused.
Or telephone service is not available as we have no access to any systems at this time."
I've been with 34sp.com for coming up to 3 years, to be fair these two months have been the only time I've had any noticable trouble.

Yep, trouble for me today too - have a forum with 1,000 eager members who will all no doubt blame me... ;)
Agree with roddy - this is the first real substantial problem I've had with them in over five years of being with them, so I'll grant them this one.
Certain functions of our software product need access to any 1 of 2 different servers - both hosted by 34sp - so we're having fun today with calls from customers :(
We have both our engineer and Level 3 engineers looking into this problem. Sadly we do not have an ETA at this time
From the status page again. At least they keep people informed.
I wonder how you get to be a Level 3 engineer? Do you reckon you have to run around completing quests and gaining experience points, and then level up, or is it just a case of defeating the Level 1 and 2 bosses?
Talking to some of my forum members on MSN, apparently they're doing 'other' stuff like having dinner and watching TV, rather than sitting in front of the computer folornly pressing F5. Disappointing.
To be honest if I was looking at hosting for a new site for a client I might look elsewhere at the moment, if only to keep all my eggs in different baskets. Not about to start moving stuff that's already there though. I did that once and was back with 34sp.com in months.
Roddy
Fixed now
All services have now been restored. the failure was with Level 3 our Pier. We are awaiting a report on what occurred and will inform you of this when we find out.
Although it worked briefly, we can't get to ours or the 34sp site again now :(

Yeah, seems to have been up and down these last few minutes.

Sadly the service has dropped again and we have again contacted Mnet and are now pursuing other avenues.

Seems to have all gone again - this is starting to annoy me now.
Yeah, I wasn't too bothered last night, but when I got up this morning (different timezone btw) and all my sites were still down . . .
Still, saves me deleting spam . . .

its a bit annoying, hope they get it sorted soon!
Yeah, it's starting to try my patience a bit, perhaps as it happens to have been happening in the middle of a very week, which also saw my laptop motherboard screw with my head, and the lift in my building break down (22nd floor!!!)
Email just received:
At 4.30PM today access to our network will be temporarily interrupted. This is to allow emergency maintenance work to be performed on our Internet connectivity link provided by Level3. The emergency work should take no more than 20 minutes to complete, all services will then be restored.
Down again. It'll be interesting to see how long this can go on before I actually move my sites . . .

and now down again FFS!
The cheeky sods even sent me a mail asking me for £1.50 for excess bandwidth this month. On the basis of the ridiculous downtime we've seen I've suggested they may like to waive that.
Still down - very infuriating, particularly when one runs a website for a group called The Fall, and it's their lead singer's birthday today - the groups' legions of fans cannot currently get into the site to pass on their wishes :(

Same here! I'm not paying that charge considering the service this moonth. It's been exemplary before, and I'll stick with them if this is just a minor blip, but a blip it is nevertheless and I don't see why I should pay the excess fee.

Deuce.
from http://status.34sp.com/
Jan 4th 18:50 - The port change that we were trying to apply on Friday as emergency maintenance will be taking place in the next 2hrs according to an engineer that i have just spoken too - there is a very high possibility that this will sort out the issues that we have been having.
The date is wrong but the time reference is for today from what I can tell.
Could be down for a few hours yet then :(
Discussion (http://forums.34sp.com/viewtopic.php?t=9322) on 34sp.com's own forums. To be fair the 34sp.com guys are participating in there and taking it on the chin. Anyway, all up now . . .
Well fingers crossed the servers aren't about to float away as well.....

We are aware of an issue affecting our network, our technical director is at the datacenter now, and is looking into this problem.
This problem has been traced to an issue with our connection provider, and we are liaising with them to restore our network connection as soon as possible.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

The final straw for me - it's happening too often now. I'll be migrating away shortly.
Over 4 hours with every single 34sp-hosted site of mine, including my own business, completely unreachable.
Can anybody recommend an alternative provider with a similar feature set and greater reliability?

20-11-2006, 12:26
Thankfully my site is only a personal one, so whilst it's frustrating, at least its not hurting me financially!
Again, in anyone fancies reccomending an alternative low-cost host with stronger resilience... I'm all ears!
Since 9-ish:(
See http://status.34sp.com/

Indeed - and it always seems to be blamed on Level 3.
Unfortunately every host I can find recommendations for seems to have similar or worse downtime!
Radiohead
20-11-2006, 14:02
Who have you had recommended so far?
Vidahost and 1and1 (ha!!! no thanks - have already had nightmares helping a customer get away from them) were the only two I'd heard of. I tend to discount any place with blatantly silly names for their business so the various ones with 'fish' or '4u' in their names I've forgotten already...

I use http://www.csnewmedia.co.uk for my sites, the downtime seems pretty good so far, it failed once for 1 hour a few weeks ago, but no other problems
An hour downtime is 59 minutes and 45 seconds too much... don't like Windows hosting outfits anyway - only a matter of time before some script kiddy takes down your site along with every other one on the server.
Indeed - and it always seems to be blamed on Level 3.
To be fair, twice I've had problems when Level 3 have been blamed (the water leak in march and the burglary which seemed to have bought done several ISPs too), I was able to find articles on the register supporting it (and I get the impression that Level 3 are quite secretive about their problems unlike 34sp). I haven't found any article on this problem though.
If I was going to move, I would definitily make sure that the other ISP isn't using Level 3. I'm not financially dependant on my site, so I'm giving 34sp another month or so as I do honestly feel it's beyond their control and their status page is done quite honestly compared to others I've seen.
... don't like Windows hosting outfits anyway - only a matter of time before some script kiddy takes down your site along with every other one on the server.
Pretty sure they use freebsd on their regular hosting plans, hence being the reason they have some complaints that they don't support ASP.

Thanks for the recommendation Andrew much appreciated. :)
All our web servers run Windows Server 2003 either Web Edition or Standard (depends on there functions) we use IIS not Apache or free BSD. Everyone of our hosting packages contains ASP apart from our Bronze Shared.
I'm not sure were you got the conclusion about script kiddies and Windows if it's secured properly with firewalls and proper permissions set nothing can be done. Security is something we take very seriously right down to the physical aspects of the servers and the software side of things. We have very little downtime, the downtime Andrew reported was due to a piece of hardware at the datacentre we used died and was replaced the outage caused problems for quite a few hosts in the same datacentre as us. ;)
If I can be of any assistance to anyone please let me know!
That you use IIS is enough for me to avoid you I'm afraid; as for 'nothing can be done' frankly the mind boggles...

I'm not getting into a IIS vs X or Windows vs Linux argument. ;)

Gort is experiencing some issues that are affecting services including mail and webmail. www services are unaffected. We anticipate that a server restart will clear this issue, and a technician has been dispatched to the data centre in order to facilitate this

Ok, thanks for letting me know.
Everything seems to be down at 34sp.com. Status page has a 'loss of network', all my sites are returning DNS errors.
Incidentally, that SMTP problem I was having - turned out that I hadn't paid my bill for SMTP (they'd deferred it for a few weeks while they sorted out a problem with their card handling system, so I didn't get reminder emails) but for some reason emails would still go through via my VPN - which mean both I and their support people (who as usual did a sterling job) were left scratching heads . . .

Oh, it's totally dead. We'd just sent out a really important batch of mails, too. Can't quite believe it.
Yeah, I've lost a reseller account, two standard hosting accounts - no wait, three, and all POP3 / SMTP access.
Could have been worse though. I could have just sent out a really important batch of mails . . .
I'm back up now - seems to have been out for just under an hour. Looks like the nameservers went to me.

They were for the a massive job for the company I work for, so it was a bit serious! We'd been planning the job for months, hit the big red button and simultaneously 34SP fell over.
Tracert and ping were doing some seriously zany stuff.
We lost a full server (several sites) + a separate reseller account...
Anyone else got problems this morning, can't access my site at all, nor email.
fine for me now too, must been an issue with my isp i guess. working from work ok.
