Which film is it where he says 'Eh, let me buy you a pack o' gum, i'll show you how too chew it?'

Is it Glengarry Glen Ross?, I'm fast becoming a big Pacino fan yet the only 'old' Pacino film i've seen is Scarface. Anyone recommend any more?, Godfathers are already on my list.

You should get "Dog Day Afternoon" for a start. One of Pacino's best performances.

I'd recommend pretty much all of his early films at least. Serpico
, Scarecrow, Dog Day Afternoon. Sadly the first 2 are not on DVD yet though.
Even some of his most recent stuff has been well worth a watch. The Insider Carlito's Way, Devils Advocate and Heat. Though my favourite of all time would be Donnie Brasco. In fact i cant think of a bad Pacino movie, and i've seen them all. Maybe Revolution from 85 should be avoided. After all he didn't make another movie for 4 years after the poor response in general from that one. Could be worth it just to see him acting with Ricky Butcher from Albert Square. :D

Yes!, they are classics. Who is your Daddy and what does he do?.

£7.99? you say?, I'm there.
:D

I've seen Devils Advocate, Insider, Donnie Brasco and Heat (watched again the other night to get a Pacino fix) all classics.

Am i the only one who thinks no one can shout quite like Pacino??, how great a headmaster would he make?. I love it when he tells Ralph to 'SIT DOWN!' in Heat.:D

Thanks guys.

The "Glengarry" disc is 4:3
was it shot in this ratio?

AJT

Think it was shot in 2:35.1

Robby
18-12-2001, 07:33
According to the IMDB it is 2:35:1. Which'll look dire Panned and Scanned.:(

Just seen Kevin Spacey is in it too!!!, Why have i not heard of this film before.:o

Devil's Advocate a great movie?!!? Okay, sure Pacino gives a great performance (if a little OTT by his standards) but I haven't managed to watch this film in a single sitting - it's utterly ludicrous. Oh, and as for Keanu's "acting" - it makes his other work almost Olivier-esque by comparison.

Keanu is terrible fair play but I enjoyed Devils Advocate - I think when Al Pacino cranks its up at the end for like 15 minutes its awesome

No one in this world can rant like Al ;)

Id better watch my spoilers here, I dont think this is one but....

I watched my Godfather Boxset this week and his performance in the finale scene of part 3 is phenomenal - first time in a long time I've been chocked up - now thats acting.

What about Sea of Love.

Frankie And Johnny and Any Given Sunday are also worth a look.

Check out 'The Panic In Needle Park' from 1971, if you can get your hands on a copy. I think Filmfour showed this quite recently...
Damn fine film, quite brutal and Pacinos at his best. And William Friedkins 'Cruising' has its moments. Pacinos as good as ever, tracking down a killer in the gay underworld of Manhattan. But it turns into The Village People reinacting Reservoir Dogs, and I couldn`t help but laugh.

Pacinos good, but not as good as De Niro. I hope I haven`t started something there...:D

Re: De Niro better than Pacino.

11 years ago I might have agreed, just but not now, Di Niro's been running on auto-pilot now since Goodfellas.

Pacino since 1990 has a far more impressive body of work.

Also, and I'm sticking my neck out here, I reckon that for every good performance that De Niro's done I could name two from Pacino.

And to put the thing finally to bed Pacino wins hands down because of three little words - Glengarry Glen Ross. Pacino would've murdered that part.

Obviously I meant De Niro would've murdered that part.

Bleedin' typos.

I see there is a lot of praise for Glengarry Glen Ross on here. it's definately on my must see list right now. I had a quick gander at the IMDB and saw it was directed my David Mamet. I loved the Spanish Prisoner and State and Main. I'm still at a loss as to why i'd never heard of it before.

Anyway some good other suggestions on here. Carlito's Way, Frankie and Johnny, The Panic in Needle Park, Sea of Love and Dog Day Afternoon.

Thanks for the suggestions.

As for the DeNiro/Pacino debate. Hmmmmmm............. No doubt about it they both are outstanding but i think Pacino does it for me. Even though i've hardly seen many of his movies.

Glengarry Glen Ross is a terrific movie but the current DVD in no way does it justice.
I believe i read somewhere that there may be a SE version out sometime next year ... who knows ?

Until there is at least an anamorphic widescreen version available i will have to wait.
The insider as previously mentioned, is another good Pacino movie , plenty of opportunity for him to lose his rag, which he does so well .

Don't know if Looking for Richard is out on DVD, but Pacino is absolutely awesome as Richard III in the few snippets of rehersal that we see (Spacey is pretty good too).

Could you see De Niro in Shakespeare? No, me neither, but after seeing Pacino, you begin to wonder...

Glengarry Glen Ross was shot in Super 35. So while the 4:3 version is not true pan&scan (ie. there is some matted picture top-and-bottom that can be used to fill-out the 4:3 frame), it was framed at 2.35:1 for a reason, and I wouldn't want to see it any other way.

Given that there's no R1 version of it out already, and that the rights to the US release lie with one of the smaller studios (Artisan or Anchor Bay, can't remember :( ), we can expect a nice transfer with some good extras... eventually.

I'd also rate Pacino above De Niro, but I enjoy watching both of them. As already mentined Glengarry Glen Ross is an absolutely brilliant movie (and I couldn't resist using a Pacino quote as my closing statement).

Watched Dog Day Afternoon again the other day, and this is also brilliant.

You just can't go wrong with a Pacino movie....

Big fan of Pacino and De Niro but I think Al has the edge.

As some one has already mentioned, no one shouts like Pacino!!
The scene from The Insider where he rumbles the sale of CBS and lays into Hewitt and Kluster is classic.

Haven't watched Any Given Sunday as I hate American football but have read good reports about one of his next projects - The Farm.

And all the bits before this phrase directed at Kevin Spacey.

Don't forget Scent of a Woman, one of my favourite movies.

The last 10 mins when he turns up at the school are pure class.

I would guess to portray a blindman for a whole movie is a massive challenge.......

Cheers, Brock.

I'd show you but I'm too old, I'm too tired, and I'm too *******' blind. If I were the man I was five years ago I'd take a flame-thrower to this place.

Love that film.

Besides the others that have been mentioned, Pacino fans need to watch these:

Scarecrow
And Justice For All
Sea of Love

I'd advise you to edit that post Munas, no swearing allowed. If it was I'd put Pacino and De Niro both to shame :D
