One of my colleagues in our new york office will be over in London next week so has said I can order from Amazon.com and have it delivered to him and he will bring it with him next week.

"great!" I thought so I went onto amazon to order a new 30gb Video iPod but I can do it**

**= I should point out that I have had a 3g 20GB iPod for about 2 years now and it has just given up the ghost. Apple have informed that it will cost £160 to repair as it's out of warranty. So you can see my gripe with Apple.

I like the look of the Creative Zen Vision: M (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000CS7U62/thedvdforums-20) but they are not out yet.

So should I just go for the iPod? Or what would you go for?

get one of those video players such as the Archos range if you plan to watch videos. The video IPOD screen is next to useless as a proper video player.

I'm not really bothered about the video aspect of it. I just want a decent sized (small), large capacity, great sounding, easy software, Audio player.

I used to have a Rio Karma 20gb. I "upgraded" because the Rio broke, it was on dixons coverplan, and they no longer sold karmas, to a 30gb ipod. Everything about it is worse. The battery life is crap, the sound quality is not as good, the accessories are not as good, the colour screen is clear but useless on an MP3 player unless you really want it for video (I don't) and the menus are horribly unresponsive. Ipods suck. Lucky I didn't pay a lot for mine, otherwise I'd be fuming.

I'm loving my video ipod. Never had an ipod or mp3 player before so I've never listened to so much music in my life. Re-discovering my 50 odd cd's. Find the video useful in that I've got a series of Family Guy on there (got the dvd for Xmas and the wife doesnt find it funny) Watch videos at the gym which makes the time pass quicker and when having lunch in KFC and the like.

one other thing: the scroll wheel is crap. It's easy to get within a range of about 3 artists/songs/albums you want. But then half the time you miss the exact one.

The only good thing about my ipod is the case my girlfriend knitted for it.

I would definitely go for the iPod - it has everything you need in a tiny form factor, and it is so well designed that everything on it is a joy to use!

Don't forget the zen does divx :)

Places should have stock soon

Firebox (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://scripts.affiliatefuture.com/AFClick.asp?affiliateID=17278&merchantID=214&programmeID=624&mediaID=0&tracking=) Say they have stock

Play.com (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://playcom.at/thedvdforums) Say they are released and they're awaiting stock.

Also remember that creative look more at function over form. Good review here http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2005/12/08/preview_zen_vision-m/

Well, personally I wouldn't want to watch movies on such a small screen.
If pushed though, the best choice surely would be the Creative. Better than the ipod, but maybe what it has in a superior product, it lacks in hype - if that's a consideration.

Both good quality products mind - just - well, it's all subjective huh ;)

I find my scroll wheel accurate and fast, battery life isnt bad, tho short of its advertised numbers(30g 5g). Colour screen i dont make use off for now, will download some vids and dump my photo's onto it oneday.

I havnt used a proper mp3 player before tho - used cheap128mb ones etc, I knew the ipod wasnt feature ruch etc but got it because its slick.

I'm still torn between the Ipod and the Zen.

No contest after borrowing a mates iPod 60gb compared to my Zen Micro i'd go Creative every time.

Zen
- Better battery life
- More media support
- People say the scroll is not as good as Apples 'wheel'

iPod
- Considered Prettier (not by me but that's just preference)
- Pretty much locked into using itunes :gag: without purchasing extra software.
- Scratch easily

Screw it I went for the Creative Zen Vision: M in black.

Hopefully I will have it next week sometime. Not too bad for £180 delivered.

Thanks for the advice

the video ipod, like all apple products, looks nice, but is overpriced and underpowered compared to is competitors.

Stu, where did you get that for £180 delivered? Thought it was £249 everywhere?

I have had the same problem, deciding between IPod Video or Zen. The zen price put me off, but if you can tell me where you got one for £180 im totally sold on it!!!!

$329 dollars at Amazon.com (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect-home/thedvdforums-20) and then a colleague is bringing it over for him

To the OP - enjoy your MP3 player. I disagree with the 'easy' criticisms that the iPod is only successful because of hype, but to each their own.

I have a 60gb Photo iPod which I'm happy with however my son has the Creative Vision M. If you want an MP3 player with video playback the Zen is the one to get. Even if you're not bothered by having video playback the Zen is hard to beat.

As I posted in the Vision M thread I'm currently trying to convince myself that it doesn't sound better than my iPod

Is that the best way to do it? just got told today that i'm starting a job on monday and already spending that lovely money that i don't have yet. Plus i have a mate going over to the states soon, probably have to wait until end of Feb before i could get my grubby hands on one though.

The Creative got a good writeup in the last PC Format.
