If you cast your eyes here (http://www.dvddebate.com/r2news.php#Akira) some nice details of the upcoming SE due out in march, the 2-disc special edition will be limited to 20,000 copies and comes with alot more goodies than the R1 SE released.

Looks like another version to go on the shelves

Some fantastic news confirmed today from our top spy; Akira, March 18, 2 disc Special Edition. Manga Entertainment's double disc box set will be available in two versions: a standard set for £24.99 and 20,000 limited editions in numbered presentation boxes for £29.99. The disc has been created using the elements from the US set released earlier in 2001 and features an anamorphic 1.85:1 PAL video transfer taken from the original US remastered print, Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 English audio as well as the original 2.0 Japanese track. At this stage it's unclear whether this has been converted to 4.0. English subs are obviously included.

The extras will all reside on disc 2 and are said to be completely different to the US version. So far we have
Production Report: The Making Of Akira
Make Your Own Akira Trailer (bit like the editing feature on Die Hard)
Photo Gallery
Interactive Akira Quiz: questions answered correctly allow access to locked off areas of the forthcoming Akira DVD website
There are more, as yet, unrevealed features to look forward to plus a few hidden ones to look out for which won't be mentioned in any PR material.

The numbered Limited Edition will also come with an Akira hardback comic, extracts from volumes 1-5 of the Titan Akira comic, volume 6 preview, interview with Katshuhiro Otomo, stickers, scratch card, poster and a certificate of authenticity. Five of these will be printed on gold foil and will allow the recipient to claim an as yet unrevealed prize later next year. It's like Charlie And The Chocolate Factory!

The menus and incidental screens have all been redesigned from scratch and are again completely different to the US disc. Our spy informs me that they look excellent and are "very much in keeping with the look and feel of the movie...the restoration is stunning, showing off detail that had simply been lost up until now on the existing film prints."

OH BLOODY HELL!!!!
Far too tempting :( Guess the Tin will have to go on Ebay soon! Bloody Manga, just when you think they'd lost the plot completely :brickwall :brickwall :argue:

i rushed out to get the R1 not only for the tin but cos i thought Manga UK folded and wasn't going to release Akira.

hmm, how much more extras can it have ? whatever they are, that wont be the reason i would consider buying it unless its a commentary, but i doubt that there will be one.

i would prbly buy it for the LE package, sounds very appealing - Comic, poster etc

Forgive my cynicism (i'm in a strange mood right now) but I'll believe it when I hold it in my hands :D

More extras than the R1 - hmm....considering the only extras they've listed is the kind of crap that Dreamworks gave us on the extremely disappointing Shrek DVD (interactive games, quizes, website stuff which all amounts to nothing after you've played around with it once) I somehow doubt we'll see anything of real value over the R1 when it comes to disc content.

The lack of a DD5.1 Japanese Audio track is a disappointment (infact the specs on the whole very closely mimic the R4 that was released to much disappointment and was also handled by/under the Manga label).

I will probably buy this, but only for the Package which sounds pretty darn sweet.

Come on Manga - prove me wrong :)

As clearly shown from the info posted, it isn't more extras, it's yet-again different extras (meaning R1, R2 and R4 all have something unique for the compulsive AKIRA collector...cleverrrrrr!)

...so if I had a copy of the R1 tin, I'd be hanging onto it!
:)
