Was thinking of hanging a lcd screen over a fireplace as it seems like the obvious place to put it in the lounge. I'm getting a little concerned though as I've been warned that the heat from the fire may potentially damage my lcd.

Is this really likely?

Heat can reduce the lifespan of the screen.

Type of fire can also have different affects on amount of ambient heat. Place a thermometer above the fireplace where you want the screen to go to check the temp.

The viewing angle is important with LCD screens and it can be to high if mounted above a fireplace.

So what kind of temperatures would be reasonable?

:luv:I don't find that appealing, I'd find the flames/light from the gas fire, under the TV distracting. Best to keep LCD and fireplaces apart and ensure nare they meet.

Not even the fact that the TV can disappear into the fireplace?

Although I don't want one myself, it looks like a good piece of compromise furniture for those who want a big LCD tv, but don't want it to be the focal point of the room. With this, the tv only comes out when you want it.

I don't get why would you wanna look 'up' at a screen? esp that high?

plus placing your speakers would also be that much harder.

Unless your room is very big and your mantle is very low then you're going to get neck ache. I tried sitting down and looking at the mirror above my fire for a couple of minutes - no way would you want to do it for any longer.

My wife has neck problems and finds looking up slightly to a screen much more comfortable than straigh ahead or (certainly) downwards. We've had a plasma over the fireplace for 18 months or so and I have no problems watching the tcv or playing computer games for extended periods of time, nor does any of my guests.

Heat isn't an issue with a gas fireplace with the flue venting directly out of the wall at the back. With a real fireplace I would be careful. They can be much hotter and the wall itself can become very warm.

Thanks for the pic Brozyniak!

I've seen ure room before in an old thread - I think it looks stunning!

This tele (32" samsung lcd) is going on my second lounge and its pretty much identicle in size to the room in the pic.

I was thinking of having a hole in the wall fire so I won't have a surround hence the TV will be a tad lower.

So how have you hidden all ure wires??? cos I haven't quite sussed how I'm gonna do that yet.

I like a few other people on here cannot understand the obsession with sticking plasmas so high above a fireplace in a heat source.

For me its not all about how great it looks, you spend a fortune to get a superb picture and then stick it near the ceiling in an unwatchable position just because it looks great there.

Personally it would give me a stiff neck but each and everyone to their own i suppose.

Viewing pleasure for me is optimum not aesthetics!

It's a false chimney breast so the wires go straight through and round to the cupboard on the left in which all the av equipment is. The centre speaker is buried in the fireplace surround.

As to the height I guess it's down to the individual, I have no problem with it at all. Other things are more of a compromise, like the left and right speaker positions and (you can't see in the picture) the crappy surrounds that don't match the montior silver floorstanders. A 50" may be nicer or even a projector but the 43" fits the space best. I asked the cat and he agreed. Ideally we would love a dedicated AV room but I value my marriage and he his tuna :p

The heat is a non-issue entirely. The wall above the mantle is not hotter than another spot in the room.

Hey Ferdy did you manage to fit a plasma over your fireplace?
