View Full Version : Rewind has returned so Happy Christmas!

Until further notice, Rewind @ www.dvdcompare.org.uk has unfortunately had to close it's virtual doors! More details about this decision will be announced in this thread so please do not start other threads asking what has happened to Rewind.

If and when Rewind does return, I will be taking a much more "back seated" role with the running of the site. I will let other members of The Rewind Team have more control over it (more or less like they do now really).

I will be closing both competitions tonight which will make the site (apart from the main index) completely unavailable.

Any comments or questions, please post them in this thread.

Thanks for everybody's support.

Craig.

Rewind is truly the comparison site of champions. I hope it returns soon because I for one am lost without it.

Yep - great site and will be missed.

So spill the beans Craig... why are you closing?

I know that spending any Chrimbo money I receive will now be made ten times harder the fact that Rewind has hopefully only temporarily gone.:brickwall
It truly is a sad day!!:( :(

Thanks for your comments.

Reasons for Rewind's temporary/permanent closure include: financial problems, technical problems, virus problems and being a victim of our own success with the volume of visitors.

More news will be announced after Christmas in early January.

Didn't someone offer you a server/hosting for FREE or something and you said you where talking to some sponsors instead.

Dave

I know how much time and effort the team put into running the site, so it's a sad day :(

I was offered hosting by DVD Options but there were certain areas which were not available compared to a proper server company.

I e-mailed Upgrade Heaven and Play but received no replies. Play told me to send an e-mail to info@play.com and it will be forwarded to the relevant department. Yeah, right! ;)

I may still go with Flump.net but at £100 per year, I may not bother. I know it doesn't sound a lot but but when it is coming straight from your own pocket then it is!

No final decision has yet been reached.

So what he's really trying to say, is some donations will be helpful ;)

but what about the FREE server that James offered in this earlier post? (http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=39527)

This is bad news indeed. I can't, off the top of my head, think of any other site that offered the kind of comprehensive service Rewind did.

Timidly: Is there anywhere else that offers comparisons of just about every DVD?....

Craig,

Get it moved to a new host asap. While it's down someone else can easily set up another one and 'steal your thunder'.

With the Flump package you can pay monthly, admitidly it's slightly dearer, but they'll set your account up in a matter of hours.

Rewind could be back open by tonight!

I am investigating at the moment. We could be back soon.

craig@rewind

I have now registered with Flump.net. Rewind will return in some form before Christmas.

I am also going to put a Nochex box somewhere on the site for people to make donations if they wish.

I'll donate a new site design when I get round to it :p

rewind's temporary closure couldn't have come at a worser time - the winter break.

it's without doubt one of the most essential DVD sites on the net.. responsible for many of my particular region purchases..

when it went out of sight, i got all flustered over which region DVD to buy and ending up getting the inferior editions!!!!!

so are there any other comparison sites for the time being? i know, i know, no one's likely to do it better than rewind! :) :(

it should never have been sponsored by blackstar and amazon.co.uk.??
Play247.com and Under18 are far more likelier candidates to recieve hits from any banners as they're miles cheaper!

Great news about the return!

I can assure you that Rewind will return with more, and better, comparisons than before. ;)

I also promise to do some work on the site this time! :D

(Well, I did do some - but not enough methinks! ;))

When Rewind does return, I will be removing Streets Online from the site due to poor Customer Service and high prices as reported in the Supplier Forum.

Blackstar.co.uk will remain for the time being as although they are not particularly cheap, they excel themselves with superior Customer Service.

Play.com I want onboard but I have no means of contacting them. They very rarely reply to their customers so what chance do I have?!! ;)

Under18.org - I am not aware they offer an affiliate scheme but I will look into it.

Craig,

Try e-mailing Play at email21@play247.com.

Amazingly, Play seem to reply to e-mails to this account in around 2 hours!

Wonders will never cease. :D

well, neither was i. i merely suggested under18.org because they seem popular on these boards, like play247.com (r1/R2) and ezy.dvd.au for R4, and dddhouse.com for R0.. i'm sure they must have some kind of banner coding which you could put into your pages... but whether they'll help fund your site is different matter? :( if they have any sense they'd jump at the chance..

we could get some kind of forum petition going.. then they could click on the link and see the thread, and the support and guage some kind of idea about our respect for your site, then hopefully that'll inspire them to help fund it, if they only knew the hits these forums get then i'm sure they'd be glad to help out? or is that just insanely naive?..

I did e-mail that address and they said to e-mail info@play.com where it will be forwarded to the relevant department.

I am up for a petition type thing but I don't know if everyone on this forum would be as willing to help as you appear to be! ;)

Oh and you can now make donations to Rewind using Nochex! ;)

This is really good news - especially since I have a whole week off over the Christmas period and can get stuck into adding more comparisons.

I assume you'll let us know view this thread and the newsletter the second the site is available again :D

As of 10am on Saturday December 22nd, Rewind is now available again at www.dvdcompare.org.uk in a limited form.

Currently, the comparison database is missing 100 titles. :( However, we are trying to access the backup from the old server so hopefully by the end of the weekend, all 1,445 titles should be available again! :)

Throughout Saturday and Sunday, you will encounter many broken or missing links. Please bear with us as we rebuild the site "live" behind the scenes.

Hopefully by 6pm on Christmas Eve, everything will be back to normal.

You will notice a lot more advertising on the site over the coming weeks. Most are affiliate links where we get money by you clicking and/or buying things via the particular retailers. I am also trying to get some more sponsors on board.

Thanks for all of your patience over the past few weeks and to the following people:

Phil Watson
Alex Chrysandreas
Colin Polonowski
Andy Worth
Adrian Busby
The Rewind Team

and everyone who has e-mailed me/posted in here with messages of support! :)

Happy Christmas!

There are now 1424 titles available at Rewind (http://www.dvdcompare.org.uk/)

Pending the complete transfer of the site (and assuming I don't get called into work!), I hope to add more titles over the Christmas break.

Add I've just added another 2 titles already!!

Craig,

Is it just my computer or have you got the alphabet in white against a white background on the comparision page as the only way I can go to listins is to look at the web links as the cursor moves. Any chance you could change the text colour.

Glad to see you back

Yes you are correct. That is a bug along with some others which are currently on the site. They will be sorted out after Christmas in early January.
