View Full Version : Nokia 8800
Anyone got a Nokia 8800, was wondering how good they are as they look well nice.
They are heavy for their size, but in a good way. I think they share software with the 6230i (or similar) so should be good to use. I am worried about how easy they scratch though. The 8800 is a current fallback phone for me if the new E61 doesn't do what I want it to do when it comes out, so I'd be interested to hear what owners think of them too.
I wonder which Network has the handset on sale for the cheapest price?

I think that depends of your monthly tarrif? Free if you pay 70 quid a month!

A friend at works has one and doesn't like it, he says it is too heavy, rips through batteries like mad and looks like a ladyshave (as he puts it.)
One for sale in the classifieds Dan.

The 8800 is a typical 'showoff' phone with more style than substance. Get yourself a K750i or a W800 Sony Ericssion. Much better value ;)

Agree with snowball, although I still like mine ;) . As for functionality, it does everything I need from a phone, syncs nicely with my PC Contacts and calendar, makes phone calls. Thats all I need.
I got mine for £20 from http://www.2u.co.uk/ on an Orange tarriff for £50 per month.

Everyone I know has got one of those phones though.
I do think that the 8800 is out of my reach though, need to consider something else.

I've tried defecting from Nokia and to be honest non-Nokia phones are just plain crap. Many I know with non-Nokia's have problems with them and miss their Nokia's. Also, support is just lacking, especially in software for syncing to PCs. Tried it and regretted it (Sony were especially bad). Nokia all the way for me

Just for a bit of balance here I moved away from Nokia phones to SonyEricssons when the T610 came out and I won't be going back. My current phone (K700) does everything I want it to do and I prefer the UI to the Nokia. It synchs effortlessly with Outlook (contacts/calander). Only thing I cant do is change the text message alert, but thats no biggie.
It's horses for courses I suppose.

That is quite true but it does get the girls all excited when they see it though.

I "defected" about 4 years ago. Never missed 'em.
That's covered P800, Samsung D800 (I think), Sharp GX-25 and now a Motorola v3.
Don't seem to have any problems with any of em ;) (although I ditched the P800 for a separate phone & pda combi as it was a pain lugging that around as a phone if that makes sense).
I really fancied the 8800, but its just ridiculously over-priced, and I couldn't justify a £50 a month contract, just to get it.
Bought a used 8910 off fleaBay, and I haven't looked back. Its titanium-cased, battery lasts ages and its very sexual. All for £70.
Job is a good un.

I've got one and it is a beautiful piece of kit, best part is the screen which you CANNOT scratch unlike every other mobile i've had it never shows a slight mark, I've had mine about 4 months and it looks perfect and i never use a carry case just my pocket.
A decent investment as they always sell well second hand as well. Also pretty hard to come by as most places don't have stock when you order.
I'd go for it!!!

The phone is deliberately overpriced, just to keep it exclusive.

I was seriously tempted by one of these a while back - they feel great to hold, open/close etc. but are light on features and ludicrously overpriced. Now if they'd squeezed a 6680 / N70 in a case like that I'd be willing to pay for it.

Stainless steel is hardly bling though is it. If it was gold that would be a different matter.
People seem to forget that this isn't a geek phone, loaded with technological gimicks. It is just a smart looking, functional item, aimed at those who want something exclusive and are willing to pay for it.
It is the same argument with watches. Some people can't understand why others pay hundreds/thousands for Tags and Omegas when you could buy a Casio 'Bomb Proof, Atomic Clock Accurate, Air Powered, Calculator Watch TM' for £50 that is probably more reliable.

I still think it looks silly and agree with my friend about it looking like a ladyshave. If it was more like the old 8890, it'd be much much nicer (one of the nicest phones I've ever had.)
It's a pretty bog standard phone in a shiny case to sell to those with more mney than sense
I've got some very shiny titanium magic beans you can buy for £500 if you want?

Used to have an 8850 and the 88-- range are very nice phones, just have a certain feel and sturdiness about them that you just don't get with the standard phones, plus obviously they are a little bit exclusive.
As people have said though, they are very much underspecced compared to other phones and I do now tend to go for the much more techy phones, not because I actually use any of the features but just because I love gadgets! Currently using a 7710, which isn't bad, little slow but nice big widescreen touchscreen which makes texting nice and easy!

Dan? You still looking for one of these? O2 (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://www.tkqlhce.com/click-582776-10309950?url=http://shop.o2.co.uk/shop/o2uk/jsp/tariffs/selectTariff.do?tariffPageView=PayMonthly&pageTab=12Month) are doing these for £229 on any plan both 12 or 18 months contracts.
Interesting, thanks.
Not sure what i'm doing yet, as I quite like a phone by Samsung, the P300, which hasn't come out yet.

It just looks like a cheap case to put your glasses in. Too much money for what they are. IMHO, the best looking phone Nokia ever did was the wonderful 8890. Which, again was just a 6110 in a posh case.
Get a 3100, i've had mine for roughly 3 years and it's still as solid as a rock.

Thats what I have, its a great little phone. I've had mine for around 3 years as well.

I have that one too... I've noticed it is one of the few phones around that doesn't seem to ever get cheaper (got it for ~£60.)
