Does anyone know if the DVD transfer of 'Gilda' issued in R2 is from the newly restored print of the film used in R1 which has been described as stunning in quality?
Stuart
A while ago myself and Henry were trying to work out the same thing!
In the end I opted for the R1 as a) the music is the right speed (if you notice such things?) and b) the cover art was way classier!
It is an excellent version of this rather fab movie!
I don't think the R2 version has the short documentary: "Rita Hayworth: The Columbia Lady" that's on the R1 and R4 versions. The picture quality of the R4 disc is excellent and it's cheap too (about £12 delivered from www.devoted.com.au).

I recently emailed Columbia Tristar to try & clear up whether the same superbly restored version of 'Gilda' has been released in R2 on DVD as in R1 and the good news about the R2 version is that they replied:
" Very simply, for all DVDs authored in the US, we take a PAL transfer (for the UK) straight from the restored, digital master, the same one from which the NTSC master is taken (for the US). This differs from most studios in that they usually take the PAL master from the NTSC master, ie one generation below, which results is a small degradation of quality. So I can only assure you that the same master will have been used for the UK release of Gilda as for the US Region 1 release, and if anything the quality should be even better due to the marginally higher quality
inherant in PAL vs NTSC."
Excellent news
