I bought a external HD from pc world, Toshiba 320gb, its a USB 2.0 compatable HD. Everything is working fine but it only connects at usb 1.0. It took me like 1 hour to copy 3gb worth of files.

I am running windows xp pro. I reinstalled SP2, i even reinstalled the drivers off my mobo cd. ive unplugged all other usb devices, ive tried plugging into other usb ports.

What else can i try? I was told, as im running win xp i dont need to install any extra drivers. Oh and i have an Asus 8ve-deluxe something mobo.

Maybe your USB ports are only version 1.0

Go into Device Manager, then Universal serial bus controllers; if you see the word 'enhanced' then you have usb 2.0 capability - if not you can always get cheap usb2.0 pci cards from ebay.

What make is your mobo?
The OP's post says Asus. An 8VE-Deluxe no less, which I can find no reference to on their website.

well odds are its an A8E or A8n-E and even if its an A7N8X-E deluxe then its definitely got USB 2.0 on it.
Mind you if he doesn't know what board it is how does he know its running at usb 1 speeds unless xp threw up one of those you are using a usb 2 device plugged into a usb 1 port type messages in the system tray

I reckon it's one of these:

http://uk.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=15&l3=143&model=376&modelmenu=1

Needless to say, it supports USB 2.0.

I have a similar problem with an Asus K8N-E Delux. Although this board has 8 USB2.0 ports, only 4 are built-in (round the back, the rest are via headers on the board) and these 4 ports will only run at USB1.

I can get USB2.0, but I had to connect up the front ports to the headers. I've nothad the time to really investigate, but it might be the same sort of problem you have..

Its the A8V-E Deluxe mobo and it says Enchanced too.

Would this solve any and all issues?

I doubt it as all hubs feed off a socket on the PC, so if you are not getting full USB 2.0, then the hub won't get it either.

In that sort of scenario, a PCI card is best for extra USB sockets, although in your case, you should definitely be OK as your mobo should have USB 2.0 as standard. http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=109140&cks=SER

Have you had a look in the BIOS to see whether it [USB 2.0] needs to be 'turned on' there?

Or, have you tried unistalling all USB controllers from Device Manger, rebooting and letting Windows reinstall them automatically?

I also assume you are connecting your device directly to the PC [by USB] and not through some sort of extension lead or the like? Some leads seem to cut down the amount of 'available power' in some cases and require a 'direct' connection. My Garmin i3 does that for example otherwise it won't connect.

HTH :)

I know that in my mobo BIOS there is s setting to turn USB2 mode on or off. It's a standard Award BIOS so I would guess that that's a fairly common option.

I had a similar problem recently with a usb2 hub & pci card I fitted to a windows 2000 pc the chipset for the usb pci card was a ali chipset.
After digging about on the MS website I found that the native xp & 2000 drivers did not support this chip set ! (driver supplied on disc was useless)

I changed the pci card for a via chipset & I got usb2 speeds for my Icybox external h/d.

If you find its a ali chipset I understand there is a ali user and support site that you can d/l a driver that cures the problem (pc shop advice after changing the card)

:suspect:

similar problem (http://hardware.mcse.ms/archive69-2005-8-227584.html)

Motherboard review mentioning problem (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/mainboards/display/asus-a8ve-deluxe_6.html)

Seems to be a problem with the southbridge version

I uninstalled all teh USB controllers from device managers, and when i connect the Ex-HD it says unknown device lol. In BIOS all usb options are enabled.
