OK, I'm tryin to install an oscommerce site, but I'm not getting very far.

The manual says that I have to create a user and assign it to the database.

The instruction manual says that i can do this within phpmyadmin - but I cannot see how to do it. :(

Anyone got any advice?

Not sure about using phpmyadmin to do this , my doc's state "It is still the system administrator's job to grant permissions on the MySQL databases"

Are you usign a cpanel host for the hosting - then you create the user and assign using the mysql icon

What 'toys' do you get with that? If you get a cPanel interface, you should get a screen like this if you click 'MySQL Databases':

You don't have to create a new user for the database - its a nice idea if you can, but as all users tend to have the same permissions anyway, there is little point.
So is it just the phpMyAdmin you've got? No cPanel interface?

Really appreciate your help. I dont fancy telling this excited person that she wont get her internet site.

I will quote form the instruction manual.

Using phpMyAdmin or another tool, create your database and user, and assign that user
to the database. Write down the name of the database, username, and password for this
database for the database installation procedure.
Open your web browser and go to http://yourserver/catalog/install/ and click on the
Install button.

I have the database created and have the mysql username, password, database name, and ip address.

However it says AND ceate the user in those instructions.

The error message I get when trying to run the install is:

Oh, bizarre!

God I'm good! :)

For some bizarre reason - I just went back to check the error message and it is now working!

Thanks for your efforts at help mate.

I am sure this thread will be back later today with a thread change title to "help, need help with oscommerce install!" ;)

Cheers bud! :)

When the configuration is asking for the Host or IP address, what are you typing in? Your domain name \ hosting address? Most times you just need to enter:

Localhost

It's all done mate - except for one other problem.

I just need to password protect the admin folder on the server so that no-one can get at the admin area apart from me and the site owner.

Do I have to get my isp to do that or can I do it myself?

The instructions tell you to use the password area in your server admin area like cpanel.

If you have Cpanel there is normaly a icon called 'Password Protect Directories'

Select this and setup a username and password for the directory \ folder of you admin folder. This should update the .htaccess file with the required code to request the login info.
