I've just ordered the limited edition Anchor Bay 2-pack of these for £17.

I know Anchor Bay has done their best by these two, and I've read highly favourable reviews of both films and disc.

I've heard Tenebrae is one of Argento's most accessible and enjoyable works, while Deep Red is his finest hour. Suspiria I thought was splendid, but I gather these are a different brew altogether.

A wise purchase, given the fine price?

If Deep Red is in the same form as the standard Anchor bay edition, that film alone is worth twice the price you're paying. :D A perfectly constructed, beautiful and very frightening thriller, now - thanks to AB - one of my favourite movies. Without doubt (imho, of course), its Argento's finest hour. Watch this one first.

I can't speak for the AB Tenebrae, but the film itself is cracking - more like Deep Red than Suspiria, and more conventional than either - cruel, hard and pacey. It has a Euro-cheese element which is emphasised by its contemporary setting, but that's a minor quibble.

The rabid Argento big-ups on this site have turned me from an admirer to a devotee - your journey starts here!

The 2-disc set is from Anchor Bay. Both discs are exactly the same as their stand-alone counterparts, but just in a double-Alpha case with a third of the price knocked off. Which is nice.

I thought Deep Red was a load of rubbish. Endless rambling, silly, po faced dialogue, dodgy 70s clothes and too many harshly lit plain looking sets.

The Goblin theme is rad, though.

You're not the only one who feels like that. I know quite a few people who simply don't enjoy Argento films at all, personally I love them :D

I've been thinking about this set as well. I bought both Opera and Suspiria and thought they were both thrilling pieces of work. Argento's ability to combine beautiful cinematography with such violent and terrifying themes is stunning.

Where are you getting it for £17 Narshty?

Don't forget about the Inferno/Phenomena set as well :). Trouble is you'll end up with Vol1 & Vol3 which forces you to buy the Demons/Demons2 set which isn't that great. In fact Demons 2 is awful.

Hi Tristan - here's a direct link (http://www.dvdimport.com/product.asp?productid=10156).

So an apparently mixed opinion on the two then.

Michael Brooke seemed to think Tenebrae was Argento's best work in his review (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?html=y&id=reviews/other/tenebre.html) - the disc got a decidely average review though. To be fair, his is the worst I've read.

You won't hear a bad word about AB's Deep Red anywhere though.

Deep Red is, by all accounts, the giallo to see, and Tenebrae featured a couple of years back in a horror allnighter in Manchester (I think) on the once-great Stella Screen summer movie tours, which piqued my interest. The schedules of extended cinema marathons often do. :)
