What is the difference between outputing or being "compatible with" dd/dts (which the dansai 852 player is) and decoding dd/dts (which the dansai isn't) ???

If you have an amp which decodes dd/dts what would be the point in spending more on a dvd player that also does this. Obviously spending more on the player will account for better playback, picture quality etc but it seems to me that more expensive players advertised feature is that they decode dd/dts.

Anyone?

And as an additional question, which one does the job better, dvd player with built in decoder or amp with decoder?

Which ever way you look at it you still need an amp, A compatiable with dd etc means that it has a digital output to send to an amp to decode while a decoder does it on board and gives you six pre-outs to send to an amp. The digital output will generally be better especially towards the cheaper end of the market. Plus you obviously need less cables

HTH :)

It's generally accepted that the amp will do a better job of the decoding.

Cheers,

When i said amp or dvd decoder, i overlooked the fact that even if you dont use a seperate amp, and use one of those all in setups, that they still need an amp to drive it! doh!

What they really need to do is release an amp / decoder / player all in one! infact i bet they already have somewhere, just not seen them.

Expected that in general an amp would give better decoding.

All in one systems do have dvd / decoder / amp / speakers. something like the goodmans 3500, sony davs model lineup (or HTK if you don't want the dvd player), bush, pioneer, they all do 'em.
