I recently received the Mickey Mouse and Silly Symphonies Walt Disney Treasures 2 DVD sets from Amazon which shipped via Germany. I picked the package up from the Post Office and saw that it had a Customs charge of over £11 but the Post Office did not ask for payment. The charge notice is pretty big and hard to miss. Anyone else had this happen? Incidentally, these limited edition Disney sets are superb.
Nice one! I've only had one customs charge......knock on wood!:)

Yeah, this has happened to me as well. I had an order for 3 DVD's from DVD Express, the customs bill for this was around £11 as well but the postman didnt even try and get the money. He just left the parcel on the doorstep, didnt knock on the door or anything.

I've never paid a customs charge for anything. When I received a 6 disc boxset which had customs stickers all over it, the postie knocked on the door and gave me the parcel.
Rest of the time, they just put them through the letterbox. Do you really think the postie gives a toss about it? They get enough grief just trying to do their job properly (Although working for the Consignia cartel, or whatever they are you can't really blame them for giving crap service!) ;)

I've been stung twice by Customs fees -- once for CD's and once for DVDs. I wasn't too bothered about the paying the VAT because I'd already figured that into the equation. I WAS ****** at the percentage tagged as 'handling fees' though.

Going back to the original post in this thread - surely there shouldn't be any customs charges no matter what considering it was posted from within the EU! Had you had any I think you coud have queried it!

True, but surely they can say something about it originating from the US can't they? (afterall, it was ordered from the US, not Germany)
Where I used to live I had a very nice postman who would turn a blind eye to my customs charges. Since I have move to Scotland I have had at least 3 lots of custom charges and now the postman doesn't even deliver them, I have to collect them from the local postoffice.

I wondered if someone would pick up on this from my original post. Of the Customs charges I've had in the past, the packages have clearly been shipped from the USA. But this one which shipped via Germany (Frankfurt) had nothing to indicate that it had originated from the USA. I'm not sure of the rules though - are goods shipped within the EU not subject to Customs charges at all? If not, perhaps that's why the Post Office didn't impose the charge.

My understanding was always that the duty was paid at the point of entry into the EU, which I assumed would be Germany in this case... but I'm more than happy to be corrected if I'm wrong! This is something I'm sure we all want clarified!
Well, matbe this is why Consignia are in so much financial trouble, what with keep paying peoples customs charges and not asking for reimbursement!

In over 2 years of ordering DVDs from overseas (USA, Australia, UK, Hong Kong), I have never ONCE had to pay a customs fee.
That's how slack the Irish postal service is.....................
