I am fed up of buying CDs with copy protection. I have paid for the CD but I often cannot rip it to my ipod, make a backup copy, play it in my dvd player or in a car stereo. I am not breaking the law by wanting to do any of this but some companies see fit to install root kits and other spyware on my pc just because I was unlucky enough to buy their CD.
I propose a list of CDs that have copy protection included so that the forum members know which CDs to boycott. It's only by boycotting this infringement of our rights that we will be listened to. What does everyone think of the idea?

Yeah, why not? It angers me too, meaning I have to resort to naughty means just to have the songs in MP3 format even though I've paid for them. And here's one to kick it off:
A Perfect Circle - Thirteenth Step

Which version do you have? mine ripped fine to iTunes.
It's really annoying to have to download a CD that you already own just to put it on your MP3 player

I use CDex and have not yet come across a cd I can't rip (I just don't install the software the cd tries to install).

The back says "UK - Printed in Canada". I bought it off Play.com. It won't even read in my PC's DVD drives.

Mine says the same and has the copy controlled logo etc. I've just checked my order history and I got mine from Play. Strange how mine ripped fine.
I can't seem to rip the Silvertide album. It seems to rip ok but the playbck stutters.

You guys should use EAC - it will rip anything.
Here are two:
Massive Attack - Mezzanine (CD-Wow)
Venus Hum - Big Beautiful Sky (UK disk)
The latter imported into iTunes without a problem, I'm glad to say.

I might give it a try.

Mine isn't!
Rippedit with Media Player no problem at all. Great album too.

Won't matter what software I use if the disc won't even be accepted by the DVD drive.
There's a huge list here:

Load EAC then put the disc in - it will be recognised (unless ive fallen extremely lucky)
Has anyone got a big stick I can beat Lou with?
I've just spent hours downloading and installing* EAC but the Silvertide CD still stutters on playback :(
* ok only about 90 seconds.

OK I suck
does anydvd do it? it removes (some) cd protection.
I think it's going to depend what region you get the disk from as to whether it's protected or not.

For many 'protected' discs all you need to do is hold down the shift key as you close the cd drawer, and keep it held down for a few seconds as it retrieves the disc info. Tried this on a few cds recently (including War of the Worlds) and it works fine. Sorry if this is old news.

Didn't the last Beastie Boys album have this?

I have been using EAC for a while now, but tried to copy Lenny Kravitz : Baptism...EAC decided that it would take 9 hours to copy it!!!!
Gave up and got a mp3 copy elsewhere!
Ahh, but once ALL discs are protected in this way, there will be no other way to get hold of the mp3 files.
Mwahahahahahaha! Then you'll pay, you'll pay for everything TWICE! We'll be rich, RICH I tell you.*
*Opinions stated are not my own - they are merely the suggested opinions of the Record Industry and in no way reflect reality as it is percieved by all right-thinking people.

The copy I got from cd-wow had copy protection and annoying clicks when I ripped it using Media Player. I bought a UK copy and this didn't have any copy protection and ripped clear as cystal.
