Is the new R1 Paramount release better than the R2 Momentum release?

Transfer quality, audio, extras etc?

No idea on the transfer or sound because it hasn't arrived yet. But the extras are substantially larger in number: interviews mainly, that's what I'm getting the R1 for. And hopefully, unlike the Momentum R2, some menu sequences that DON'T give the impression that you're about to watch a bizarre remake of Eraserhead.

The r1 version has a new 5.1 remix approved by Lynch. It also has no chapter stops.

Get the R1 version, you won't be disappointed!

Lynch is also responsible for the "No Chapter Stops"

Oh well, it's his film, and we know what he's like about commentaries, so I guess this is just one more convenient and saleable feature of DVDs that the guy's just not into....

The Region 1 Straight Story DVD also has no chapter stops.......

May seem a little strange - but I can see where he is coming from.

Well, my R1 arrived today, and good grief! It's almost not an exaggeration to say it's as large a leap forward from the R2 & R4 editions as they were from VHS. The new 5.1 soundtrack, even through my not-very-flash 2-channel setup, sounds fantastic: such detail! And they have completely suppressed the rampant aliasing which almost destroyed segments of the R4 and French & English R2 prints (you know, those bits where in the R2 the cobbled pavements seemed to get up and run away!). The most you'll get is a gentle shimmer in its place, and usually not even that! Even on my humble setup, the picture looks lightyears ahead of previous DVD versions, and is confirmed anamorphic. :)

What is coyly and unhelpfully described as "cast and crew retrospective interviews" is in fact a brand new 30-minute featurette on the film. The trailer included is the US one and is therefore different to the one included on the R2. And the makeup demos and modelling segments are wonderful, running for approximately 2-3 minutes and 4-5 minutes. None of these have any chapter stops, just as with the main feature.

I can see a possible artistic reason why there might not be any chapter stops in a 123-minute film, but it's still a massive pain in the backside in some circumstances.
