Just wondering what would be the recommendations (plasma, lcd, rptv, crt??) for a <=40" tv? My 28" is dying, focus has all gone on one side, colours are a bit off etc

It would get fairly heavy use, with dvd, telewest and xbox media centre.

No stand needed as I've got a bench already.

HD would be nice, but nowt to use it at the mo so its not essential.
DVI input would also be a +, but any solution where i could easily connect a pc to it without using sommit naff like svideo!

Personally I've yet to see a plasma/lcd that I like and considering the fact that they show up all the problems of naff feeds like Sky One etc., they will only show their worth when HDtv becomes commonplace.

We've got the same TV as you and are considering the Toshiba 36ZP46 (CRT) as an interim solution until prices of plasma/lcd drop and HDtv widely available.

Okay so it is 36'' but the picture frame effect means it looks very smart and it has won tons of awards as a top end CRT.

With everyone clamouring for the latest plasma/lcd you can pick one up for about £650.

yea, I'm not to enamoured by the flat screen market at the mo...LCD's don't have the blacks and colours, plasma's have too short a life, rptv's don't seem much better.

I'm thinking about these SlimFit (http://www.samsung.com/uk/products/television/crt/ws32z306vbxxeu.asp) which Samsung are now doing, no bigger sizes in the UK, 30" in the US. Seems to have everything...looking for the catch now!

~£500 for Currys.

grr just noticed the US 30" is HD compat, where as the UK 32" is 576i only:( no component or hdmi/dvi either

scrap that there's another model:

that is pal HD compat...well says it is!

How long would you plan on keeping a plasma for?

A Plasma bought today would easily last well past the date you would look to replace it.

well its not so much that I'd want it to last, but more that at the given price I'd 'expect' it too.

Currently I'm thinking the following:
LCD's, basically not good enough picture (when compared to similar size Plasma/CRT) for the money.

Plasma's, better PQ than LCD, but screenburn, weight and ~half the life time.

RPTV, difficult...issues with the size (i've got a bench so the cabinet ones are out), not as good a picture as plasma, but much better price/size ratio.

CRT's, best picture possible, but emphasis on the possible! Best price/size ratio. But damn heavy and large! Oh and no HDTV, or at least not HD Ready with the HDMI sockets.

My Black Sony Trinitron TV is about 14 years old and still gives a better picture than many modern sets I've seen.

How long to Plasma's last?

i was just gonna say, my Hitachi set gives a far better picture than my sisters £3500 50" pioneer. Due to the fact they are feeding it with NTL.......far worse picture than sky due to the heavy compresion they used.....How ever DVD's are a different story. I cant quite work out why people are buying plasmas just to watch tv on, i couldnt stand it tbh. Hence why i dont have one.
