I've got an x-wave DVD with 5.1 outputs on the back, what equipment do I need to make it a decent home theatre system
i.e Sub, speakers etc

An amp for a start!...the 5.1 outputs are for direct connection to an amp, the speakers, sub etc connect direct to this, although the sub could be connected directly to the dvd players output if you really really couldnt stretch to an amp, but the best you could hope for is stereo then :)
