Apologies if this is a bread and butter question to all those who frequent this forum.

Santa brought me a shiny new Sony FJ1Z laptop for Christmas. It has an 80Gb hard drive made up of a 40Gb drive on C: and D:

However when I check out the properties of the drive, the C:shows a capacity of 32.6GB and the D:a capacity of 34.9GB.

What is stored in the phantom GBs on each drive and is there any way of gaining access to see what is stored there?

Is there anything that can be safetly deleted from those areas?

Probably two reasons:

1. There's a hidden partition used if you need to do a system restore.
2. Hardware and software manufacturers define 'gigabyte' in different ways.

Disk Management in Windows will let you see all the partitions.
