View Full Version : [O2 shop] XDA Exec on Data 5 tariff - minimum term cost £162.79

Here's how:
In the January 06 guide from the O2 shop on page 33 the O2 XDA Exec is listed as free on any business tariff of £45 and above and £99.99 on all other business tariffs.
The cheapest available business tariff is the standalone Data 5 tariff at £9.40 per month inc VAT (£8 per month ex VAT) which has a minimum term committment of 12 months. Furthermore, if you trade in an old phone when you get the XDA Exec then you will receive a cheque back for £50 within 28 days.
Minimum term cost:
O2 XDA Exec: £99.99
Data 5 tariff (£9.40 x 12 months): £112.80
Trade-in old phone: -£50
Total: £162.79
So for £162.79 you get a Windows Mobile 5 Pocket PC with VGA screen/camera/keyboard/bluetooth/wifi/GPRS/3G/GSM mobile. I don't think a deal like this is going to happen again within the next few years ;)
For more info about the O2 XDA Exec, take a look here:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Universal
Edit: If you want a cheap SD memory card for the device, take a look here (http://thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=405869)
Edit 2: Now that January 2006 is over this offer is no longer valid.

Same deal as the xda mini s that i flagged in the vario thread, except it was £79.99 for the handset.
Thought I'd flag again just incase the brick that is the XDA Exec is too big for your pocket.
Other than the size of the screen/keyboard, mini is not 3G and has slower processor but operationally is the same.

thanks for the heads up mate. I've been looking at one of these for when my imate jam contract runs out in January. I played with one of these in the o2 shop last week and it's a lovely piece of kit.
can i get it for £99.99 on a business voice tariff as well? I can't find any good info on the o2 site.
cheers

Well, the information in the booklet doesn't explicitly state that you must be connected to a business data tariff if you want the phone at £99.99 so I guess you'd be able to get it for that price on any tariff, including a voice one (but AFAIK, you need to get at least 2 handsets if you want to make use of an O2 business voice tariff).

I should add that the phone is supplied unlocked so there's nothing stopping you from using it with another SIM card (e.g. from a 12 month's free line rental cashback deal).

this seems like a great deal
binary0110 have you actually got one of these for this price yourself?
would there be any problem asking for business tariff? can anyone get it?

Yes, I got one of these this morning. The guy behind the counter wasn't particularly happy that I was getting the phone so cheap (and he had to manually adjust the price on the till - it was previously scanning in at £229.99) but O2 have advertised it as £99.99 in the booklet so he overrided the price. For the trade in you need the phone with the battery and charger (but it can be any phone - I traded in an old Motorola Three phone) and I was told that a cheque for £50 would be sent by post in the next 28 days.

@binary0110 - thanks for this superb, i've been wanting one of these.
as flanders asked, did the person in the shop make a fuss about getting a business tarrif?

No, there was no problem getting connected to the data tariff - obviously you have to pay VAT so it's £9.40 per month rather than £8 per month but otherwise anyone can sign up to it.
Can this run Tom Tom mobile version with the appropriate bluetooth gps device?
TIA.
Well, just been to my O2 shop and they said it was for businesses only and I would need purchase order number, headed paper etc to set up a business account and I would have to take a data and voice plan on. On page 12 of the same booklet the exec is listed at free on tariffs of £60 and above, £150 on tariffs of £30 and above and £230 on all other tariffs. I don't beleive him about having to take on voice and data tariffs to get the business deal, but I do beleive the offer you're talking about is for business customers only becuase the non-business user offer is on page 12 of the book.

It would be able to run Tom Tom Navigator (the device runs Windows Mobile 5).

You definitely don't need to sign up to both a data and a voice tariff - you can sign up to the data tariff as a standalone contract (otherwise they wouldn't have been able to put the order through for my SIM card). In terms of you needing to be a "business" customer, I guess it depends which O2 store you try. A lot of the staff will try to fob you off with all sorts of excuses (headed paper :cuckoo: ) because they probably don't want to sell the phone so cheap. The data 5 tariff is a business tariff but there's no reason why it can't be taken out by an individual.
Whoever said you needed "headed paper" to take out a contract on a business tariff is clearly trying to fob you off and doesn't want to sell you the phone (in fact, he probably just bought it for himself as soon as you left the store!) This is the reason why I don't like dealing with high street mobile phone retailers - there's no consistency in the level of service you get between different branches.
I agree, you may be able to get away with this in some stores if you're lucky and persist. However, becuase of the deal stated on page 12 of the same booklet (£230 for the handset on any tariff under £30) I can't see why stores would honour it unless you're a business customer. Just rang o2 and they said the same although offered me the handset for £150 with the £20 month online tariff.
Excellent deal.
So, If i'm asked, do you own a business? I say...? (I don't btw)

Excellent deal.
So, If i'm asked, do you own a business? I say...? (I don't btw)
They never asked me anything to do with owning a business. I guess it will depend on which store you go to (I got mine from the Windsor branch) and who you speak to. If it helps, even the O2 website states that you can sign up to a business tariff as an individual:
http://www.o2.co.uk/business/tariffs/inclusiveminutesindividual
In addition, this part of the website states that you can sign up to the data 5 tariff as a standalone contract:
http://www.o2.co.uk/business/tariffs/datatariffs/0,,203,00.html
My contract document just says:
Tariff: 1010 Data Only Tariff - £0.00
0015 Data 5 Bolt On - £9.40
Insurance Declined - £0.00
Monthly total - £9.40 (inc VAT)
Awesome, thanks very much for the deal Binary.
These tariffs are designed for the sole trader... You don't have to be a limited company to choose a business tariff, just someone who wants to be treated like a valued business customer

o2 in merry hill just refused to give me this. They said that the data tariffs were not part of 'all other tariffs' and therefore the £99 price was not applicable.
Said i would have to take out a voice tariff as well to get this. They blatantly didnt have a clue what they were talking about and the first assistant spet 15 mins searching their intranet for something to back up what he was saying.....he didnt find it of course.
The assistant manager refused to give me the offer and said all he was offering was a voice tariff.
In reply to the above poster regarding business tariff.....the assistant initially denied it was a business tariff even tho it was on the business solutions page. Then when I pointed out that the prices should be inclusive of VAT if they were for consumers he didnt know what to say....and said you dont need to be a business to have a business tariff.....not like that was relevant in any way!
I got the names of the assistant and manager and fully intend to make a complaint. Both of them were lying about the terms and conditions saying i couldnt have the phone for £99 and the data 5 tariff. They couldnt find this and when the assistant was pressured to show me the terms and couldnt find them he said he'd have to send an email to Hannah Murphy in charge of marcomms to get a copy of the t&cs which he claimed said I couldnt have the deal. Not happy!

Try again in a different store - there is absolutely no consistency between O2 stores in terms of the level of competence of the staff or the quality of service (apart from the fact that they have all been trained to try to sell you overpriced mobile phone insurance!)
Hopefully you will eventually find a store where the staff don't try to fob you off.
Edit: I suspect that you might find it easier to first convince them that you want to sign up to the standalone Data 5 tariff for 12 months because you need a separate contract for data only. Once you've got that far, produce the brochure and ask to buy it with the XDA Exec for £99.99. Also might be worth taking some print outs of the O2 website in case you get fobbed off with excuses like "headed paper".

If you look at the vario thread you will see the problems that bananaman had to get the deal i mentioned earlier on the xda mini. As binary0110 says there is an absolute lack of consistency in o2 shop service. This said I was highly impressed with the Edinburgh store, although it was their manager that told me about the deal!!!

Yep it took me 3 days and i visited 3 stores (one twice and one 3 times). In the end i just dug my heals in and said other stores are doing it ring them and find out what they are doing that you arnt. that worked a treat.
2 questions...
1. I've never taken out a contract phone before, can someone tell me what is required when you take one out instore.
2. Is it possible to pay the whole years subscription at the counter, so you'd end up paying the full 212.79?
binary0110
30-12-2005, 11:54
1. They will need to see some form of personal identification (credit card/driving licence/passport) and then you will have to supply address details so they can do a credit check.
2. Bank details to set up the direct debit (these can usually be found on the debit card otherwise bring a recent bank statement with you).
3. Cash/Card to actually pay for the phone (i.e. the initial £99.99)
AFAIK, it isn't possible to pay the whole year's subscription up front but I might be wrong (and tbh, I think it would complicate matters for the O2 staff at the shop so if you want to check this it might be better to phone up O2 in advance to check this).
Just remember to set a reminder in Outlook/on the phone itself to cancel the Data 5 tariff contract in 11 months time (they need 30 days notice).

Many thanks for this - I managed to get this deal at 9:05 this morning. Unfortunately didn't have my old phone & charger on me to trade in and apparently you can't come back in later to get the £50 back - apparently the £50 is a credit to your bill (or thats what I was told).
Be prepared for a long wait - the call centre who do the credit checks took 20 or so mins from the time the sales assistant rang them to the time the authorised the sale (a very nervous 20 mins whilst I expected them to find some way to welsh on the deal).
Next to trade in my old P900 and Axim X3i at CEX and the whole thing should be nearly free.
Thanks to OP!
Just got a chance to post, picked up this deal yesterday.
Was armed for a bit of a fight, but the lady didn't give me any hassle. She was a bit confused at the two different prices but I showed her the business page and she just overrid the amount to pay for the handset.
@solidstate - they didn't go through a call centre for my credit check. The computer did it automatically and it only took about 20secs.
I was also told that the upgrade fee is sent as a personal cheque, not call credit.
Thanks again binary0110!

I've used Martin Fields (http://www.martinfields.co.uk/dis_product.asp?model=jas_jar&modeln=i-Mate%20JASJAR) screen protectors before and they're pretty good but I decided to order a Brand Ultra Clear Screen Protector (http://shop.brando.com.hk/ultraclearscreenprotector.php) instead ($10 until 1st January 2006, $13 thereafter).
Just for info (if you're shopping for accessories), the O2 XDA Exec also goes by the following names:
HTC Universal
I-mate Jasjar
Qtek 9000
T-Mobile MDA Pro
Orange SPV M5000
I just got this deal too, didn't have any phone to trade in so went to another shop and bought a PAYG for £20 and traded it in! All i had to produce was my driving license, no headed paper or anything! This must be one of the best bargains of the year! Thanks to OP!
Confirmed it is unlocked, works fine with my virgin sim! :)
So just how good is the phone? And how useable as an actualy phone?
Another happy customer
Got the deal without any problems or questions whatsoever, this was at the Gyle branch, Edinburgh.
Many thanks OP

I'd be interested in this too. One gripe does seem to be the size of the unit when taking a call, apparently a lot of folk use a bluetooth headset.
Voice quality sounds excellent, but make no mistake this is not a slim and sexy phone, it feels like holding a brick at your ear.
And there doesn't seem to be a way to get the MAC address so i can't put it into my routers filters :brickwall

My router has a page which shows all devices connected to it with their mac addressess. Couldn't you switch the mac permissioning off, allow it to connect and then pick up the mac address from there (assuming yours has a similar page)?

First activate the wireless network card, then Start-->Settings-->Connections-->Wireless LAN-->Advanced.
This should provide the MAC address.

Yes, I believe redrhino and Bananaman_007 have got exactly this offer. The overall minimum term cost is the same. The only difference is that you pay £79.99 for the O2 XDA mini S and get £30 back if you trade in an old phone.

Yes, you can also use for pc's internet connection via the USB lead. If in doubt, turn off the radio (phone part) and only turn on Wifi.

You're right, i'm ashamed i have never noticed that before!

I've been wondering about whether this is a misprice - it is slightly odd that they quote a different price for the XDA Exec on a consumer tariff (page 12) vs a business tariff (page 33) but then again I'm not sure if the O2 marketing department were fully aware of all the available O2 tariffs (including the £9.40 data tariff) when they decided on the pricing structure for the phones in the brochure.
For example, on page 14, the SE W800i is £79.99 on "all other tariffs" (£59.99 if you trade in) and the SE K750i is just £49.99 on "all other tariffs" (£19.99 if you trade in). If you were to sign either of those phones up to the Data 5 tariff (assuming you trade in an old phone) that would give you a minimum term cost of £172.79 (SE W800i) or £132.79 (SE K750i) which also sound like pretty good deals (although nowhere near as incredible as the XDA Exec deal).

I have managed to surf the net without charge on my phone (the XDA mini) through the wifi option on my computer and phone. I had my PAYG sim in my phone with no credit on it and i was surfing the net quite freely in the bath :)
I would suggest going for the mini if you are going to be carrying the phone about for day to day use, its sleek and quite sexy i think :) its got all the functions i would ever need from a PDA and the slide out keyboard makes it easy to type texts or word/notepad documents.
woooah got a result in Blackburn store, moaning Lancaster manager phoned saying I still couldnt have the deal whilst I was finishing up with it in Blackburn. Thanks OP this is a great deal, needed a lift since we';l never get that camera from apple :D

They will probably check that it is able to turn on and off but otherwise I should think they would expect you to trade in a working phone! Remember that the trade in cash back will arrive as a cheque so if they decide your phone doesn't work then they probably won't send you the cheque for it.

Thanks also OP! I visited the Trafford Centre o2 store this afternoon and choose to get the XDA Mini S, i'm impressed.
I spoke to a guy called Matt Bell and didn't have any problems, if anyone wants to ask for him if they're considering getting this offer.
The XDA Mini S cost me £79.99 on the data 5 tariff and i traded in an old phone (he checked to see if it was working by the way) for which i should be receiving a cheque back in 28 days for £50.

Hi all
I am thinking of going for the xda exec and wondering if people have viewed many web sites on this as I currently have a ipaq 2210 and it's 240 x 320 screen is rubbish for seeing sites in near 'normal' mode. Also can you whack lots of programs on this like any other pda or does the o2 branding stop you from installing skype and other useful ppc apps?
Also I will be going to the Eldon Square store so was there someone specific to ask for there?
cheers

The screen is excellent (VGA and good contrast/brightness). The O2 branding will not stop you from installing any programs (the only issue with installing programs is making sure that they are compatible with Windows Mobile 5).
After playing with the XDA Exec over the last couple of days, I would advise that you first update it to the latest ROM version (http://www.my-xda.com/xdaexec_soft3.html) (if it isn't already supplied with the latest version). I have also found it a lot easier to use without any of the O2 customisation by hard resetting the device and choosing "Corporate Mode" when prompted (instead of "Basic Mode"). In order to do this you will need to enter the password "0506". This will ensure that none of the custom O2 software is installed. However, if you plan to use O2 GPRS/3G then you will have to manually set the appropriate settings (or any other service provider should you choose to use a different SIM card).
The device can be crossflashed to any ROM designed for the hardware (i.e. HTC Universal/I-mate Jasjar/Orange SPV M5000/T-Mobile MDA Pro etc) but the general concensus from other users is that the O2 branded ROM is the fastest and most stable version.
For more information, I would suggest that you visit the XDA Developers forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/index.php)
Hope this helps!

I have an Ipaq 2210 too, the XDA is a lot better at displaying web pages as you would expect but its not perfect, mostly due to Internet explorers formatting.

Does this increase the performance of the device any? I find it a bit sluggish when starting apps and changing between landscape and portrait modes.

I have been reading over on xda-developers and it seems a cool forum so will be registering if I get this deal
My requirements are such that I need to be able to see my work (web sites) on the road to make sure the changes I have made have actually worked and the 2210 doesn't allow this with it's screen really. I noticed opera is out (unofficially) and the new IE isn't really that new at all on Windows Mobile 5 although I am on non vga windows 2003 (not se!) so I think it is a case of getting it and then testing it for myself.
Off to Eldon Square tomororw it is then :D

To be honest I didn't really compare - I just installed it straight onto corporate mode and manually added the O2 GPRS/3G settings. I don't have a problem switching the screen from landscape to portrait. The only thing which I find slightly slow is opening/closing applications (probably because it's running Windows Mobile 5 - see below). My Exec already came with the latest O2 ROM which (from what I read) is a big improvement over previous versions in terms of performance and stability.
Opening/closing apps is generally more sluggish on any Windows Mobile 5 pocket PC because the applications are all stored in ROM rather than RAM (as used to be the case with Pocket PC 2003). There's not much which can be done about that other than to keep frequently used programs open in the background rather than shutting them down after use.
The big O2 shop in the Metro Centre  for this deal.
Got served by the assistant manager and he looked at the sale leaflet and said "god thats a bloody good deal". He then looked at the normal section of the leaflet and said "that dont make sense" then went ahead and sold me it

Thanks

Me and my dad have got one of these each sorted in the Taunton on the offer described in the 1st post. Manager agreed to the offer and checked the page to ensure a voice service wasn't needed.
Absolute bargain really considering these retail for 3 times the price
has anyone tried to get this deal in any of the Croydon stores?
Yep, picked one up no problem at all yesterday in the Whitgift Centre branch...as everyone else has said, it's not locked to O2 (and came with the latest ROM installed - though I went through the update anyway, don't know why...)
thanks to OP!

Been to try this in Milton Keynes centre store but there was no sign of the booklet so didn't think I would have any chance of getting the deal so didn't speak to anyone.

Just to say that I went into Metrocentre this morning and was half way through a credit check when the manager said head office have stopped this deal. Also tried Eldon Square and same thing when she went to get the phone was told by somoeone that she can't sell it on the data tariff alone and all the sales books were being pulled from all the stores nationwide as it was a mis print! I am going to try and write to head office to see if they will honour this but think the bargains over.

Odd, considering I was discussing this offer with an O2 store a short while ago (about 30-40 mins ago). Sounds like he didn't want to sell it to you :(

Oh dear, it looks like they've cottoned on to what's happening. If it is a misprint then O2 will have a lot of work on their hands trying to recall all the January 06 brochures - I wish them the best of luck. In the mean time if you're still thinking about whether to take this deal I wouldn't hesitate any longer - grab it while you still can!
If all else fails then the O2 XDA Mini S is available for the same price and this definitely isn't a misprice.
Cheers OP
Refused at Chichester they woud not honour the deal.
Online could not meet the deal either quoting £145 + voice tarrif
No stock in Worthing, Brighton but called Bognor regis and they reserved me one.
1 hour later I have an XDA Exec for £99 + monthly data 5 tarrif.
Brilliant deal and many thanks to Binary
I just got an XDA Mini S about an hour ago. It took a bit of convincing that the phone could be bought with the data tariff only and not a bolt on to a voice tariff. Many thanks to the OP.
I now need to find a cheap MiniSd card and bluetooth GPS receiver.
Got mine this morning in thr Wood Green o2 store. Spoke to a guy who was unsure but checked with a colleague who said yes. Waited for 1/2 hour before starting to go through the credit check and the lady said Exec on Data 5 = 230. I explain I had been waiting 1/2 hour after being told that was the deal but was told the manager would not allow it. Had a word with the boss, who at first was adament she won't do it. After a little fuss kicking, she reluctently agreed as I had waited after being told. Nice bit of kit that I didn't really need!. A mate then went to Enfield saying I had just got the deal and they done it for him, again reluctantly!!
Cheers OP
This is really annoying as it seems the North East have been told by their area sales manager to not allow this but it is going through all over the country.
Anyone got any ideas how I can get this? Does anyone want to sell theirs for cost price + little extra?
If I switch the phone part of the Exec off and just use Wireless network, either Home/Work or Hotspot, I will not be charged anything ie that will not count as data toward the 5mb, will I?

Well I took the sim out of the exec and was able to surf using the wireless network at home - with no sim in it I don't see how anyone could charge me. Worked fine.
I`ve since put my 3 Sim in it (talk and text 500) and everything seems to work. I can still use the wi-fi net at home - when I load explorer away from the house it seems to want to start dialling (for GPRS I guess) but I`ve never let it finish (don't know how much 3 charge for this kinda thing)...

What are you trying to say I am spoiling it for you and everyone in the North East in some way :suspect:
I was very pleasent and went through the credit check process (pre approval) and it was when she was getting the phone from the stockroom she came back and said she couldn't honour the deal due to an email from the area sales manager not allowing them to sell it at this price
Good luck
Not that just that you appear to be a jinxed. At a guess Durham may well be in a different area so try there.
Lol ok I see what you mean but it sounded like there is an email that has been sent around the North East to prevent people from buying the exec at this price but I am going to write to head office as if others can get this deal across the country that is unfair.
Thanks OP.
I just got one in Leamington Spa, without any trouble (didn't say anything to me about going onto the business tariff).
The guy said to me at the end of the transaction that they've been sent an email telling them that there was a printing mistake in the brochure but they've been told to honor the price. He said that they've been told to remove the brochures, but he said that it was a bit too late for that as they've already been distributed.

Picked one up yesterday at the O2 shop on the corner of London Wall/Moorgate, EC2. No problems getting the deal, even took my old 3510 for £50 :D I was told it's a chequeback after 3 months?
Where's the best place for a powered mount for the car? I'd like to put TomTom 5 on it. I'm a noob when it comes to PDAs so any advice would be mucho appreciated.

Hi mate,
Could you drop me an email, i live in london and got a few questions about the deal. Hopefully if i can tell them that i know someone that's got the deal, it will better my chances.
You don't happen to know the name of the guy/gal that served you, or if you could give me a description of what they looked like so i could try and get their name, that would be helpful.
Any tips as to how i should go about it or did you just go in and ask for what was stated in the book?

EDIT: just checked the bill - it's Rupesh...
Yay got one in slough yesterday. There was a trainee who I saw and she didn't know anything about the deal - told her loads of people got the same deal this morning in that store, she went away and asked the manager - he gave me a scornful look and reluctantly said yes. He came over and saw that I had a forename that I don't usually use (but its on my credit card, but not on any other things like utility bills etc). He tried to complain and revoke the deal because he thought I might be doing something fraudulent so I said why don't you just take a look at my BT Bill, and my debit card for the signature. That shut him up - I got the phone and scrammed outta there lol. But there was another guy in the store who came up to me and said that the deal is going to be pulled off soon and that it's at the discretion of the manager to authorise the deal.
Hmm... lets see.. I've got a Dell Axim x50v, this little beauty here... and my old P900... going crazy now..

The girl who served me was Charmaine, I just showed her the page in the book (P33) and asked for the data only tariff (£9.40pm). When it got rung through the till, the manager had to override it and apply the extra discount. He didn't seem to mind doing it. Charmaine is apparently in charge tomorrow (Monday), they are open from 10-4 IIRC. I'm due for an upgrade as well, so I might pop in and see what they can do. HTH :)

Cheers to the OP,
Got this deal in the Hertford branch, all three staff were confused about it at first, then the manager said well its in the book so let him have it.
Traded in a NEC e808 to get the £50 cheque.
They have two left in stock, thats if the staff dont bag them
Well Darlington said no so thats that. I'll be making a complaint about the manager but that has everything to do with his management style (he is clearly an ex second hand car salesman and hiding away) rather than about not getting the deal.
just tried this, the ASM for gwent said to bugger off, the cheapest you can have it is £16 a month voice tarriff
And you need an old phone AND charger to get the 50 quid refund
And you need an old phone AND charger to get the 50 quid refund
Or you could do what i did, go to the link and get a PAYG for 19.99 with £5 credit, keep the sim for £5 calls and get £50 back for £14.99.

A friend use to work in the O2 Newcastle (Northumberland street) store and she seamed to think that the area manager was VERY strict about offering up infromation on any deals. She said 80% of the time the customer would know more about an offers.
I suggest anybody in the Newcastle area trying to get one talks to Caroline in the Eldon Square branch she bent over backwards to help me get a mini even though i had been told by the shop (twice) no not at that price.

Got mine today from the Peterborough store. Served by the Assistant Manager and all was well until she tried to ring it through the till. The price came up as £229.99. I refused to pay this price as the brochure said £99.99. After 10 mins I was then informed that this offer was only if you took out a voice tariff NOT data only.
So, I pointed out that the brochure said ANY tariff and that the Data 5 was indeed ANY tariff. Therefore a £130 discount was applied and Bobs your uncle, I have a nice new toy to play with.

hey guys,
they said no at the angel branch after a long while with the assistant.
they said no stock at the london wall branch.
then i popped into the holborn branch and it went ok up until the price scanned thru as 229.99
the manager was called and begrudgingly said yes but they rejected my old siemens fone as trade in!

I went in asking about the 36mb deal asking info on it, and approach in for the kill (the £9.40 deal), but he told me i could have either of the data tarrifs before i could say anything lol. Deal went smooth as a babys bottom :D

Many thanks to the OP.. picked up two today from the Abergavenny branch. They refused any trade-in, without even looking at the phones (a couple of brand new PAYG bought for £20 from Phones4U), but still a very good deal.
I made a bit of a mistake... I confirmed the deal verbally with an assistant (took a while and a few phone calls to 'senior managers') but hadn't at that stage bought the PAYGs (in case the deal wasn't going to happen), so I left them to start off the paperwork (with my ID and proof of address) and nipped out to Phones4U. When I got back, the guy said 'I'm sorry about this, but we can't accept any trade-ins on this phone'. This had apparently come from the area manager (got his name, but won't post it here). If I'd had the phones with me, maybe they wouldn't have had a chance to change their mind...
I'd be interested to know their policy on trade-ins. Their excuse was that the business tariff page doesn't show any trade in values. I mentioned that several other stores had accepted a trade-in on exactly the same deal (I gace them a list, taken from this thread) but their attitude was 'go to one of those stores, then...'
I backed off, not wanting to screw up the deal, but will probably give O2 a call in the morning.
Still, very pleased regardless of trade-in problem :D

Well there certainly seems to be a lot more advertised on eBay than when I checked a week ago but somehow I thought that might happen!
Cheers binary0110. Went into the Sheffield store today and managed to pick one up on the data tariff only. The shop assistant was definately a bit shocked but after going into the back of the shop, he later came back and said he had to honour it as that's what it stated in the sales catalogue.
Then I asked him if I could trade in my old phone and he looked through the catalogue and it came up as a £50 trade in for my old 3510i, again he was a little bit surprised.

Hi All, Want to try this tomorrow. Did you have to produce the catalogue or do you go in and just ask for it?
Every store I've been in has the catalogue out on display - but you'll definatley need it to get the deal. The sales assistants I encountered won't believe you otherwise - the ones in Barking still didn't believe it even with the catalogue (said it must have been a publishing error).
Even the one who finally accepted it in East Ham kept reading the text over and over again and shaking his head. He actually said to me as I was leaving - that he'd read the catalogue from cover to cover looking for good deals and he hadn't thought it was possible to have a data only tariff so had missed this.
Has anyone tried pocket pc skype with this yet?
 to pokergenie - I reckon you softened the East Ham lot up for me (since they checked with Ilford). And, of course, a big  up to original poster - been looking for a decent wifi PDA for a while (getting a camera and phone is a great bonus).

What sort of ID do O2 shops require (I already have an O2 K750i but it's through Carphone Warehouse, but I should be known to "central" O2 already). If I need passport, bills etc I can't try for this until tomorrow.
I used my photo driving licence with my address on it but even though I got through this fully the sales assistant wasn't allowed to sell the phone when she went to get it from the stock room although she had 'sold' it to me for that price!!!!
Good luck and I am awaiting a repsonse to my letter to head office - not hopeful...
something with your address on (driving licence or utility bill will do).
Something else with your signature on (i.e. a credit card or debit card).

Tried two stores today Romford and Ilford and both said they had no stock, I actually went into the Ilford store and saw one of the assistants sorting out what looked like an exec with someone, but the assistant I spoke to went out the back and then said they had no stock and to try on thursday. I asked her if she could hold one for me but she said no. Then I enquired as to whether they would do it for the price to which she said they would but it must be an error in the book.
So I called Romford and he said no stock and call back on Thursday.
So wish I could get one but it's looking unlikely now.

thanks opp, picked this up today from Manchester Trafford Centre, ..he said he had sold two earlier on today and it was a misprint but he had to honour the deal.
I went in asking about the 36mb deal asking info on it, and approach in for the kill (the £9.40 deal), but he told me i could have either of the data tarrifs before i could say anything lol. Deal went smooth as a babys bottom :D
took in a 3310 or something for the £50 cashback (which will arrive as a cheque within 28 days) also took the insurance at £4.99 p/m
many thanks opp. and the rest.
Hi mate,
Sounds great. Do you know who you spoke to and done the deal? I think I may try for this tomorrow as were going over there for a shopping trip.
Did they also have the brochures freely available in the shop?
Cheers,
Fred :)
P.S. May also end up in Meadowhall, anyone tried this offer there yet?

The same chap sold me one too at lunchtime today! I simply picked up a sale brochure from the shelf, found the page the offer was on, and asked Moh if they were still doing the Exec with the Data 5 tarrif. He confirmed they were, and job's a good 'un!

Hi All, well I did it. I got to the store in Bolton and showed the guy the offer. First he said that it was incorrect and that he can do the Mini S for £79, but he then went and saw his boss and she phoned her boss and was told that if anyone comes in with the offer then they will honour it. So I got the XDA exec for 99 and traded in an old phone. But I was not asked for any details apart from when he fillied in the online form. He didnt need my ID or phone bills nothing. Great find. Will play with my new toy over the next few days.

Thank you binary0110 i have moved into the 2oth century.
So whats the best option for getting voice as well and is it locked or not
Best option for getting voice is to use a different SIM card in the phone (e.g. one from a mobile phone deal with free line rental after cash back). The phone isn't locked.
Hmmn just tried this and was told £249 for the phone on any tarriff under £45 a month.
Alas they didn't have any catalogues in stock.

you need one as ammo and mention it's in the sale book, must be a sale price etc... and good luck cos this is most defo a store by store bargain!
Yeah you deffo need the catalogue as ammo
Manchester fort has a stand with loads of the catalogues on and if you show the sales bod the right page (page 33) then they cant say no!
I may be able to scan it later if it helps?

Hi, thanks to the op. I just got one from the Holborn branch with no problems with tarrif. But when she scanned my phone for trade-in it only came up as 1p! Not sure if this was because it was a an old 3310 but the woman said she couldn't do anything more than that and I couldn't be bothered to argue about it so just didn't bother with the trade in.

Hi, can someone summerize how i get this phone for £99? Maybe on the 1st page?
Do i pay for the total of the 12 monthly charge on the business tariff, get the phone free etc, and trade in my old phone and that comes to £99?
Ive got an n-gage :| :help:
EDIT - And also any helpful tips on getting them to agree to this price would be lovely.
No, you take out the phone on the Data 5 business tarriff.
The handset cost is £99 which you have to pay there and then.
O2 will then charge you £9.40 per month line rental for which you get a 5mb data allowance (no minutes or text messages).
You can also trade in an old handset for £50 for which you wil receive a cheque in 1-3months times by post.
yup its unlocked just looking on ebay there are some dual sim holders that might work with this any idear

I used mine for about 2 hours yesterday, and very quickly decided its not very practical at all to use as a phone. Sure, if you want to use it as a PDA, and also transfer data and video over 3G, then its a good device but I personally use a phone to make calls, carry it around in my pocket and be able to answer the call easily. None of this is possible with this device.

in answer to (a)... that was just my observation. Besides, I just dont think its worth the time or effort to list any highly sought item on ebay any more, as its highly likely going to be picked up by scammers and its quite likely a newly registered 'fake' account will snipe in the last few mins just to spoil your auction.

Mate. you've been stiffed by either an incompetent staff member or a devious one. Scanning a trade in phone always takes 1p off the bill, its how there computer logs it. The £50 trade in is a cheque through the post. (Which has been mentioned in this thread a few times.)
If you wanted to I suppose you could take it back under 14 day rule and repurchase it with the tradein.

Is the XDA mini unlocked as well?
Thanks to the OP for this thread! Many thanks.
Picked a XDA Exec up today - although the manager was very kind and helpful, he wouldnt do the deal of £99.99 (he said it must have been misprinted). However, he said that he would take £100 off the normal price of £229.99, So I got it for £129.99 with a £50 trade in. Still a good deal :D
Now I need to look for some bluetooth GPS stuff...
Thanks again! :)
EDIT: Mini S is unlocked
Went to the O2 shop, the guy seemed didn't seem to know about the offer. He spoke to his manager, I was asked where I had seen the offer. I showed him it in the catalogue (page 33).
They said they would honour it even though it was a misprint as I had physically seen it in the catalogue.
It took ages, but they were helpful enough. The next person in the shop was after a ... O2 XDA Exec on the Data 5MB tariff!
Thanks to the original poster and the people who said the catalogue was important.
Silly question time, I don't have a phone contract. Would a normal PAYG SIM be okay in the phone? Any suggestions on the best one?
Also some people have mentioned a 14 day period to return the item, does that still count as the item is bought as part of a business tariff?
Great spot OP.

A PAYG sim works just fine - I've put one - an ancient vodafone - in mine. You'd obviously need to ask your provider for the settings if you want to access the internet using it (I didn't).
Also sorry to the poster who asked me to scan my receipt - I'm afraid I don't have access to a scanner.

Thanks for that. From O2's website it says if you get a data only tariff, other types of calls can be made for the following (INC VAT):
Standard Calls (UK Fixed Lines) 25
O2 Mobiles 25
Other Network Mobiles 25
Text Messages (per message) 12
Media Messages (per message) 25
Voicemail 901 0
Mobile Internet (WAP over GSM) 10
I haven't tried this (phone still charging), but it would mean that I could use the data package and make phone calls on the same SIM (I didn't think I could do that)

it really depends on the type of data tarrif 5 they give you
one of them is a fixed data tarrif only, you cant make calls from it
the other is a centrica, central enabled?? or something like that and you can make calls at the above rates.
both are £9.40 p/m

Stockport says "NO WAY" its a printing error and they were miserable about it
Game's up guys, although I managed to get a set at this great bargain.
Went into O2 just during lunch, and the assistant insisted that I had to get a voice tarif ontop of the data tariff. She then went in to ask her manager, and came back saying that, yeah, it needed to be with a voice tariff. I was about to give up at that point, but thought I'd just say that the offer didn't say anything about that, and I stressed that it only said "£99.99 on all other tariffs."
Anyway, she went back to the manager, and I was getting ready to go anyway.. Manager then came out, and said it was obviously a printing error, and the correct price is on page 12. I said, fair enough, but the offer should still be offered anyway, since it was advertised. He then asked me to hold on.
This is the important bit!! They've recieved an email from i think the head office. I couldn't read the whole email, but the gist of it said that it WAS a printing error, and they should black out all mention of this offer using a marker. HOWEVER, IF a customer comes in with this catalog which hasn't been corrected, THE OFFER HAS TO BE HONOURED.
So in the case of the last guy in stockport, i suggest you go and argue further and ask them to clarify with the head office, or someone. I'm not exactly sure where the email originated from, but the manager obviously followed its instructions.
I think all stores have recieved this mail today, so by this afternoon, I'm sure all catalogs will be blacked out. I'm not sure if you had one from before, it'll still be honored though. But go try your luck!!! I almost gave up, but now have an O2 exec for £99.99 + (12 x £9.40) - £50.00

Just got this baby, thanks to the OP! Serious bit of kit, might make my P910i redundant, especially with 3G, Wifi and what appears to be very decent handwriting recog. compared to the letter-by-letter effort on the SE. Have a K750i (not to mention a trillion other phones) for voice so the size isn't so much of an issue for me, it'll only be carried when I want PDA functionality.
May I suggest to everyone now that they invest in a decent screen protector before it is too late. You'll really regret not having one once the scratches start to appear. I'm still recommending MFOPs (Martin Field Overlay Plus) as the clearest, if anyone knows of better then please mention. Brando are more pleasant to write on with a matt paper-like feel under the stylus, but the clarity of the MFOP is so near perfect that I haven't gone back.

I actually completed the downgrade about 10 minutes ago. WM5 for the HTC Blue Angel, which is what the M2000 and XDA iis actually are is not brilliant when running it which is a shame. Only benefit I could see was integrated MSN, so you can downlaod hotmail direct to the phone as opposed to going through the browser, and of course the fact you dont loose everything if you let the battery run out.
Bug wise it would not tell me people were calling, very buggy with mail and messaging.

i think you can get the latest ROM version for WM5 and thankfully the old ROM version.
I've got the files, which you're most welcome to, but for me I'm happier goign back. The ROM downgrade is fairly simple in fairness and the phone seems to run faster now too.
Any queries give me a shout.

Store in London, Hammersmith, so I'm not sure it's that helpful to you. However, from what i saw in the email (cause there were bits that were highlighted) it did say that if a customer comes in, asks for that offer, and has a copy of the unedited catalog, they should honor the deal.
Not sure what the rest of the email said though, so there might have been a deadline to honour such deals, or as benji said, once they changed all the catalogs in store, it means that they won't honour it anymore. Perhaps it'll only work in stores which haven't changed their own catalogs yet.
Thanks a lot lohwj.
I will try, because the store still has a lot of catalogs with the offer.
i just got the deal from Kidderminster o2 shop and they have catalogues there too, hth.
and THANKS op!! :)

Do they do any tests on the trade-in phone?, got a 6100 which freezes sometimes. Probably a firmware thing but if its acceptable as a trade-in I might as well do that instead.

No tests in my experience...

If you have any joy at stockpor let me know - cause as i stated earlier, the person serving was a miserable old thing and really didn't help
I've changed to the corporate install, and following a soft reset no longer have the power indicator at the bottom right of screen. Can't see an option anywhere to enable it, so have to go through settings/system to see battery status. Any thoughts? :?:
Will do another hard reset tonight, see if it was just a glitch.
Buy yourself SPB Pocket Plust for WM5 as it has an ace battery bar at the top of every screen and its very discreet! It also has some other great toys in the package!
Manchester based peeps, it may be worth going to the trafford center to get it from the O2 shop there as they are fully aware of the error in the book and are allowing people to buy as long as they mention the deal or show them in a book.
cheers

Tried the Ilford store again today armed with my catalogue and comments from previous posts about the email.
The ASSistant was having non of it and said it was an error in the catalogue and that
I couldn't have it without the voice tarriff.
So I left and called the romford store who said they had stock so drove there and initially it looked good but then the manager got involved and was saying no so I mentioned other stores doing it to which she walked of and said she called the other stores and they said the same that I would have to do the voice tarriff.
So after my third attempt and lots of driving I am giving up.
Really wanted one of these.
Possibly the most useful bargain of the last two years for me, if it had come off.
Thanks OP
I got this deal today from O2 bond street branch. Luckily i had a catalogue, which states this deal.
Now cheapest SD card / screen protector hunt begins

hi one of the kind forumites has posted me the brochure... i have been trying to keep up with the many posts in here but have lost my way- he said to me that there was a post which had an email from o2 saying that the deal was to be honoured to all with the brochure.. can someone please tell me which post it is as i cannot see it.

Sadly thats not what the mail says.
It says that stickers will be despatched for friday with instructions and in the meantime the brochures in the store should be edited. If not edited (and the customer kicks up a fuss) then they have to offer the deal, otherwise they don't.

What is the edit going to be? That it's going to be £199.99 on Data 5 only? It surely can't go much higher than that.
Or that you have to take it on a voice+data tarriff? That would completely kill their sales I'd have thought, since most people already have a perfectly good conventional phone on a voice tarriff, and this thing is way too big for most people to consider using as a day to day phone, very few people are going to be happy to be forced into taking a second contract and pay again for voice.
Pass. I saw the memo for 10 seconds last night. I got the jist of it but there are bits I can't remember and bits that aren't clear.

no idea about the edit as well. All i know is the manager asked his staff to collect all the catalogs in store, and use a marker to black out the whole paragrah.

Check the brightness settings. I think if you tap power twice it will drop the brigtness down.

Just got mine last night.
Great PDA/Gadget, an absolute dog of a phone! :(
raging... i went with brochure in hand this morning. took it into the nearest o2 store, the guy sounded optimistic but asked if he could show his manager- came back 5 minutes late with the brochure with the £99.99 bit scored out with black marker pen!!! told me no store in glasgow would honour it.
he was a **** of the highest order.

GF is working away for a month or so, If I got one of I assume she could check her emails etc and would that come under the 5mb data tariff? If she goes over I assume they just charge her so much a minute or Mb? any idea of costs
She wants to take the laptop but doubt the b&b would let her surf the net using their phoneline.
just got escorted from cwmbran O2, they told me 'no chance'

Oh dear! "Escorted" sounds a bit heavy handed..

£1 /MB over the 5mb allowance. I use googlemail over gprs/3g on it and it recognises you are on a mobile device and sends it as text only. Would have to use it a lot to get to the 5mb limit using it.

I've decided that Im going to bring mine back to the shop!
Couldnt be bothered with it, its next to impossible to use as a phone!

Thats not too bad, it would only be text with no attachments so 5mb should last her quite a while then.
May go into town later and try my luck, the O2 guy was willing to sell me one last night but I didn't have my trade-in with me at the time, hopefully they haven't clamped down in the meantime
