View Full Version : Olympus E-1 Digital SLR - £98.70 (Apple Education Store)
Art Vanderlay
29-12-2005, 06:50
Apple Store UK (http://www.thedvdforums.com/jump2.php?url=http://tracker.tradedoubler.com/pan/TrackerServlet?p=2554&a=60823&g=32244) have the Olympus E-1 SLR which normally retails for £700ish listed as £98 if you go through their Education Store.
You or your dependents need to be in some form of education to qualify.
It seems a lot like a mis-price as it is still listed at £600+ on their main site, but it is worth a go just in case it is some sort of mega promo for schools.
What does this bit mean?
System requirements
Requirements:
G3 or higher
Mac OS X 10.1.3 or later recommended (or Mac OS 9.1 and later)
Original USB (1.1 or 2) or Firewire port
Is the software no good for a PC? Not that I will probably ever use the software!
z
Wow! Have to give this a try at least!
Thanks Art...or is it George?

They only list the Mac specs on the Nikon 5200, too. I wouldn't worry about it if I were you.
Has anyone got a confirmation email yet?
My Fiancee is a mature student, on a two year course, does that count?

My Fiancee is a mature student, on a two year course, does that count?
Not sure. There is a seperate site for Higher Education which can only be accessed from within a HE institution. Whether HE students also qualify for the standard 'Education' store isn't clear.
It does say in the T&C that you must be
"a student with a valid student card or a teacher, lecturer, tutor or other supervisor of students at a UK education establishment"
Which implies that HE is OK.
Um.....where's the education store?
Best. Importer. Exporter. Ever
Cheers Art

Um.....where's the education store?
There is a link for "Education Discounts" in the right hand column, about 4 items from the bottom of the page.
Ah well, suck it and see eh? Can't hurt. I've always wanted a digital SLR and the review on Steve's Digicams looks good.
There is a link for "Education Discounts" in the right hand column, about 4 items from the bottom of the page.
Thanks!
Thanks OP, worth a pop. In the market for a DSLR anyway so lets hope we're lucky.
Just recieved my confirmation email!
thanks Art Vanderlay - top spot
Anyone experienced any previous Apple misprices ? Maybe it should be £598.70 or £498.70 ?
Not had one of these for a while, so I'm in for the ride ...

The T&Cs suggest that if it is a mis-price then they will not honour it.
2.6 Whilst we will make every effort to supply you with the Products listed on the Order Confirmation, there may be occasions where we are unable to supply these Products because, for example, (i) such Products are no longer being manufactured or available or (ii) we are unable to source relevant components or (iii) if there was a pricing error on the Apple Store Web Site.
As you say, worth a try but nothing lost if it doesn't come off.
Thanks Art, ordered 1 for the misses.
She says she's a student (well she doesn't go to work every wednesday and claims to go to uni :suspect: )
I think my crossed fingers are getting cramp!
Just checked on the BT staff discount site for Apple (which gives the same discount as the Education site) and it's showing as £574.58 on there so I'd imagine someone pressed a couple of wrong buttons when pricing up the education site.
Worth a try though :)
Ordered one ( ultimately for the kid ) but chances are very very slim. Still, nothing ventured ....
Thanks OP.
It says on the order acknowldgement basically that they can back out up until you receive the order conformation.
I have just received mine!
Could be lucky

Order confirmation here. Once I've got this, how can they cancel?
They can easily cancel and hope that people don't use the small claims court. Most wouldn't be bothered and would just whine about it on forums.

Yay - another confirmed order. Took about 40 mins. Looking forward to this as I already have the E20 and this looks like it addresses a few of the E20's problems.
lol @ £1000, the chances of us getting this is somewhat zilch! Here's hoping... its bound to have triggered an internal stock alert by now with all the leechers.

Worth a stab. Cheap upgrade from my E20 :).
So pleased my GF is doing a few extra courses at college.
Don't really expect anything to come off (other then the usual bitching here when Apple say no ;)) but it's worth a shot.
Confirmation just received.
Confirmation for me too! Niiiiiiiice!
Thanks OP!
Given it a try

Also received confirmation email, surely they now have to deliver since the first email says:
'Please note that this Order Acknowledgement is an order status update for information purposes only. In the event of our acceptance of your payment and order, we will issue you a subsequent Order Confirmation at the following e-mail address:
Please be advised that until you have received your order confirmation, Apple reserves the right to decline your order and refund any payment we may have received from you. In the event that we decline your order, we will strive to contact you by e-mail or telephone or mail.'
And since the confirmation email shows

Shipping Cost: 0.00
Discount (Incl. in Total): 425.79
VAT @ 17.50% : 14.70

I think on the whole these Forums are a lot more mature about accepting when bargains don't come off than we were a few years ago, and certainly a lot better than some other forums. Apple's T&C have given them a way out if it is a misprice, so if they choose not to honour it, then we should all just accept it and move on.

It is a Digital SLR so you can change lens etc play around with other aspects like exposure etc just like a Pro.

Thanks OP, ordered one :) Was looking for a digital camera as well. I only ordered 1 as the wife is a student at Manchester Uni. I can see people buying in bulk and ebaying these!
Yes, its only cos its an apple site they show specs required for Macs - Olympus make it so it's universal anyway.
See this for a review http://www.megapixel.net/reviews/oly-e1/e1-review.html

Will they check if you are a student? My wife has recently left college, so I was hoping to use her student card if they do and hope for the best
Apple's T&C have given them a way out if it is a misprice,
Clarify this please. I don't see anything in their T&C that covers this and I believe that they are legally obliged to supply once payment has been taken.

It also has a fully metal body, and is water resistant.
But I agree that the RRP is a bit OTT when compared to the cheap Nikon and Canon SLRs

The T&Cs suggest that if it is a mis-price then they will not honour it.

From the website:
Shopping Agreement
Can I Purchase?
By clicking “I accept” below, I confirm that I am:
• aged 18 or over
• a student with a valid student card or a teacher, lecturer, tutor or other supervisor of students at a UK education establishment
• I agree to Apple contacting me to check my status. I will provide proof of my status upon request and I agree Apple can refuse my order if I do not provide proof which is satisfactory for Apple. Apple’s decision will be final.
I ordered from them before Christmas in my wife's name - she is a teacher. No check was made. Having said that, you obviously shouldn't be ordering from them if you don't meet the criteria. I can see them carrying out checks in this case if it IS a misprice.

You must be looking at different T&Cs than I am. Here's the 2.6 I can see:
2.6 Whilst we will make every effort to supply you with the Products listed on the Order Confirmation, there may be occasions where we are unable to supply these Products because, for example, such Products are no longer being manufactured or we are unable to source relevant components. In such circumstances we will contact you to inform you and may suggest alternative Products that you might wish to purchase. If you accept our suggestionsthen we will send you a revised Order Confirmation. If you do not accept our suggestions then we will cancel your Order in relation to those Products we cannot supply and repay you any money that you may have paid to us in respect of those Products. Repayment of such monies will be the extent of our liability to you if we are unable to deliver to you the Products you have ordered.

Is that Olympus E-1 Digital SLR need lens? I think the len is quite expensive. Somebody knows about SL, please tell me.
Some of the extra lenses (the better ones) will cost a LOT more then the camera (at this price).
It does come with a 14-54mm 4/3 style standard lens (that is quite decent by all accounts). It is a total bargain if it comes off if you’re into your photography it is a Digital SLR (and a complex one to learn how to get the best out of if my older E20 is a good reference point).
It's not a camera for the point and shoot crew (IMHO). There are much better pocket cameras around for that niche but for the enthusiast Olympus make well built sturdy cameras, not the best but far from the worst.

I imagine Apple could easily refuse to honour most orders by exercising their right to check if you are entitled to use the education site.
However, it would be funny if the entire order process is automated, and the staff come in after New Year to discover all their stock has been shipped out!
Got my confirmation at 1106 ish
Ordered for my son who is doing a BTEC in IT at college and keeps on about needing a camara for web sites etc

How incredibly rude? What gives you the right to insult me - and why? I ordered two since it's a great price, one for me and one for my brother who'd greatly appreciate an upgrade from his ixus v3.
Take your personal problems somewhere else, thanks.
Have to admit I considered buying two myself. In my case both me and my Dad are keen amateur photographers (he loves trains and I love nature). We live 150 miles apart so not like we could share.
In the end just sent him the link so he could decide himself though. Plus, if Apple do start saying No it's always the multiple orders that get cancelled first.
I remember the Woolworths Sagem Phone Mis-Price with the free Mini H-Fi. I ordered a couple as Xmas presents. Some people were ordering 10, 20, 50 of them. In the end I think Woollies gave people a maximum of two. The people that had ordered loads were going Mental. I was just happy to get a bargain.
I made some poeple very happy that Xmas!

You have a lot to learn about online misprice buying etiquette matey.
tipicus/ElBobbo: Please keep it friendly in here! ElBobbo could have made it a little more clear why he bought two (based on the rules we have in place about people stating that they are buying multiples) but he did only get two and not 10!

Considering that the camera is over 2 years old, and is only a 5 megapixel, it *may* not be a misprice. Apple could be trying to offload them. Or one can only hope.
Anyway i've ordered a few aswell - don't see what the harm is.

i have expplained to my sister the joy of a misprice.
you get big excitement for a few days, as you check emails, has it shipped, whats does the email say, whats does the T&C say. check credit card, check the forums for updates for others.
whether it comes off or not is mostly irrelevant, the fun is in the waiting.
Despite my earlier plea, someone's gone and posted it on MSE. :oh-hum:

Gone for one. Don't expect this to come off but thanks to OP!

So we go from 2 to a few....
I predict that, if this does come off, we'll be seeing them on ebay
Still I'll be happy with the one I ordered. I just hope the poeple ordering multiples done ruin it for the rest of us.
Maybe Apple will honour the orders for one and those being greedy may well have their orders rejected, why does anyone want a few and how many is a few
I've ordered one and will be well pleased if it comes off but I ain't gonna get angry if Apple reject the orders.............
Considering that the camera is over 2 years old, and is only a 5 megapixel, it *may* not be a misprice. Apple could be trying to offload them. Or one can only hope.
Anyway i've ordered a few aswell - don't see what the harm is.
Well that's just earned you a black book entry :|

What you chaps don't seem to understand is that there will have been thousands of people who have haven't posted. Some will have ordered none, others will have ordered over 20 each to sell on Ebay.
The people who have ordered 2 will not really impact Apple's decision, it is the people who haven't posted and ordered 20 or more.
I have just received a confimation email from Apple. Doesn't this mean that they have to sell it?
As I know the initial one still has its T&C's but the confirmation is something different isn't it?
Just got off the phone to Apple as i'm actaully a student at Uni and did need one of these, but mistake there end...so expect a few more e-mails coming your way if you have ordered one :(

Considering it is listed as £599 on the non-education section that seems unlikely.
Thanks OP - was tempted but decided against - don't really want another lens system.

I meant two when i said a few.
I don't really care how many other ppl order. I don't mind if the whole thing goes through or not.
Really, those of you complaining are only doing so because you're worried you won't get your order!

I tried to PM but it didnt work so i'll email directly.
Ok i'm gonna stop posting, coz i know that i'll start gettin flamed even more.
I just believe that fundamentally, if we're not doing something 'wrong' then it doesnt matter how many we order.
When people worry when others order many items, it just proves that they know they're doing something 'wrong'. So we're all as bad as each other.
Anyway that's just my thoughts - i shall have a read of the forum rules again and adhere to them.
Well lady said the exact modle number and misprice before i had even finished saying 'Digital.....' :)

Very strange, a double misprice - it's even cheaper on the Irish Apple Education website - just 99 euro!!!

Doesn't it then imply once the order confirmation is sent, then they have to honor it?

So why did Kodak honour their Camera mis-price bad press if they didn't versus good press if they did. If I remember correctly the legal ppl were split and Kodak could have spent years in the courts and of course more than money than the misprice. Lets just wait and see.

In that case, it was label Special offer. In this case it isn't. And if it did come to court, the court will look at it does the reasonable person really expect to find a Digital SLR for under £100 ? If it doesn't then it will rule it is indeed a mistake and decide the case in Apple's favour.

I wonder if this will turn into another Futurama style incident. ;)
lol I hope so - I got my Futurama boxset :D
So why did Kodak honour their Camera mis-price bad press if they didn't versus good press if they did.
Are you talking about the Kodak misprice that concluded in January 2002? There are two big things that differentiate that misprice with this one.
1. The Kodak misprice was a reduction of £229, so about 70%. The Olympus misprice was a reduction of at least £500, some say even more. The bigger price that a company who has done a mispriced have to eat, the less likely they are to honour it. This is a huge, whopping great big misprice.
2. Since January 2002, numerous precedents have been set as to what a retailer can do when it has taken orders at a 'mispriced amount'. Back in 2002, things were less clear, and Kodak were unsure of what they could get away with, so honoured the orders. With the benefit of the interim years, avenues open to Apple are:
- Say 'Sorry, due to unprecedented demand we are unable to source any more of these items at this special price. We have refunded your money.' This happens all the time. Are people really going to launch legal proceedings and go to the European Court of Human Rights over this? Doubtful.
- Say 'Sorry, there was a problem on our website for a few hours and you ordered something that was incorrectly priced. We apologise and have refunded your money. Here is a £15 discount voucher as a gesture of goodwill'.
- Say 'Sorry, this price is for Education Students only. To qualify, we require you to send in proof of your student/teacher status, in the form of a 2005-2006 NUS photo card with your name upon it'. At which point all the non-students are stumped.
Online retailers now have T&Cs to make their cases watertight, should misprices occur. Kodak didn't have that back in 2002. That is why these cases are different.
By the way, Apple's 'ultimate get-out clause' is clause 2.6:
2.6 Whilst we will make every effort to supply you with the Products listed on the Order Confirmation, there may be occasions where we are unable to supply these Products because, for example, such Products are no longer being manufactured or we are unable to source relevant components. In such circumstances we will contact you to inform you and may suggest alternative Products that you might wish to purchase. If you accept our suggestions then we will send you a revised Order Confirmation. If you do not accept our suggestions then we will cancel your Order in relation to those Products we cannot supply and repay you any money that you may have paid to us in respect of those Products. Repayment of such monies will be the extent of our liability to you if we are unable to deliver to you the Products you have ordered.
And any way you do seem to like to ridicule others for their opinion were you 'Bullied as a Child'No. I like to find humour in people's desperation to believe they have snagged a misprice bargain.
Surely an entirely redundant question ? :D
Not really, I don't need another D-SLR having recently bought a KM 5D, but Elements is on my wish list. Camera thrown in for almost free would be nice. Anyway, despite this being a few years old, Jessop's online price for the body only is a whopping £649.99
Crikey so much that's great and so much that's bad about the Bargain Forums all rolled up into one thread :)
Aye no doubt most people who have attempted to buy it have a child at school or know a child at school or a teacher or a university student but really are not in education themselves. :suspect:
Yes... the problem of course is that Apple have covered themselves by saying in their T&Cs that the person who places the order must be
a) 18 years old or over AND
b) a registered student / teacher
Saying "Oh I have a 12 year old in Year 7, I am entitled to the discount" isn't enough.
Full T&C information here:
2.1 T2.1 To place an Order you must be 18 years of age or over and be accessible by non cellular telephone. In order to be entitled to benefit from the special discounts on the Apple Store for Education you must be either a registered student and possess a valid student I.D. or you must be engaged as a teacher or lecturer at an education institution and must require the Product for your own use or for your classes or for research. Apple is entitled at any time to require that you produce evidence of your entitlement to purchase under this provision. Apple reserves the right to cancel your order in its absolute discretion if we should determine that you are not a student, teacher or lecturer and/or that you do not require the Product for your own use or for teaching or research purposes. We will inform you if we cancel your order on the above basis. Any payments you have made will be refunded to you.
BTW I'm not saying Apple won't honour the orders (they might). I am just saying that they seem to have enough wiggle room to get out of it, should they want to.

Are you talking about the Kodak misprice that concluded in January 2002? There are two big things that differentiate that misprice with this one.
Thr kodak deal was honoured because the confirmation email stated that a contract had been formed. £98.70 isnt an obvious misprice either especially as the page indicates a discount of £4xx. The all important factor in the kodak saga was the confirmation email.

No, I believe the all important factor was the confirmation email ALLIED to the fact that Kodak's terms and conditions didn't have any get out clause proviso allowing them to cancel the contract if they are 'unable to supply the goods'.
Apple do have this in their T&Cs.
No. I like to find humour in people's desperation to believe they have snagged a misprice bargain.
Everyone loves a bargain - it is not realy desperation most people are just trying to get a bargain and perhaps one over on the company. There are very few people who would blow gasket if this was not honored, most will just get on with searching for the next bargain.
I prefer the humour of a large company have to dig it self out of the pooh - as they make enough out of us consumers anyway

Well a contract can't be cancelled once its entered into otherwise it'd be pointless! So any terms and conditions saying that the contract could be cancelled would be void in any case.
This situation doesn't apply to apple as no contract has yet been formed. They haven't stated that a contract has been formed in their correspondance. Legally the contract would be formed when payment is taken and then they would be obliged to supply the goods.
It's not a blatant misprice either. I didnt know that this camera was worth £600+ before today and then it does say it's discounted. The contract could be cancelled if it was a blatant misprice such as the 49p tvs from Homebase/***** earlier in the year.

But haven't they taken everyone's payment and so should have formed a contract?
My payment was taken straight away?
I'm definately not going to get stressed if it doesn't come off as it is idiots like those who annoy me. Like the people who sue the NHS because they were misdiagnosed or if they tripped over a curb stone. People like that should be executed......
So basically, because they have taken payment, has the contact been formed?
And has anyone else's payment been taken?

The contract is not really formed until Apple send out the goods to you. There are plenty of ways they can get out of it before that point.
There's not much point in getting all excited over this. After all if it is honoured then great but as with most misprices it probably won't be. Don't people learn after incidents such as Futurama for £15.99 or whatever it cost? :n0rty:

Surely this in the first email is saying when you have an order confirmation there is a contract
Please note that this Order Acknowledgement is an order status update for information purposes only. In the event of our acceptance of your payment and order, we will issue you a subsequent Order Confirmation at the following e-mail address: x
Please be advised that until you have received your order confirmation, Apple reserves the right to decline your order and refund any payment we may have received from you. In the event that we decline your order, we will strive to contact you by e-mail or telephone or mail.
I would say the bits in bold clearly mean there is a contract when the confirmation is sent?

A contract can be overturn by the court if it finds it's a " Mistake ", the term Mistake is actual legal meaning. Ususally it will put the parties where it was before the contract has taken place.

Surely this in the first email is saying when you have an order confirmation there is a contract
I would say the bits in bold clearly mean there is a contract when the confirmation is sent?
Have a gander at their T&C's.

Like the people who sue the NHS because they were misdiagnosed or if they tripped over a curb stone. People like that should be executed......
Are you sure you are in full time education ??

I'm just saying that the people who think they can get something for nothing, and if they don't they just sue the hell away.
The people who sue are the ones who have caused all the ridiculous health and safety laws.

Have a gander at their T&C's.
I have and cant see where it actually states the point the contract is formed, so reading everything else, I would say it is at the point of order acceptance
2.3 When you place your Order, we will issue you with a Web Order Number. We will do this via the Apple Store Web Site, unless you have placed your Order by telephone, in which case we will issue your Web Order Number when you telephone us.
2.4 By placing an Order, you make an offer to us to purchase the Products you have selected on these terms and conditions. We may or may not accept your offer at our discretion.
2.5 If we accept your Order, we will notify you of our acceptance by issuing an Order Confirmation. We will send your Order Confirmation to you by e-mail provided you have indicated an e-mail address on your Order Form. Otherwise we will send the Order Confirmation by post. The Order Confirmation will be effective on sending. If we cannot accept your Order we will attempt to contact you by email or telephone or mail.
They can probably cancel 80% of the orders through the fact that most won't have been placed by students/teachers, and the rest through the 'if we cannot supply as they are not being made any more' clause but if they do that then they wouldn't be able to offer them again at a higher price.
At the end of the day thopugh, it's probably a misprice, if it comes off great, if not then no ones lost anything (except the muppets who have them on fleabay already who hopefully will get negs  )
I reckon they will initially put all orders for this on hold whilst they check each one for -
By clicking “I accept” below, I confirm that I am:
• aged 18 or over
• a student with a valid student card or a teacher, lecturer, tutor or other supervisor of students at a UK education establishment
• I agree to Apple contacting me to check my status. I will provide proof of my status upon request and I agree Apple can refuse my order if I do not provide proof which is satisfactory for Apple. Apple’s decision will be final.
By rigourously enforcing those conditions they can probably reject the majority of orders on the basis that the person ordering has to be 18+ and the one in education.
Genuine orders after that can be rejected on the basis of availability/stock. I would not imagine that Apple would keep many of these in stock.
What I don't get is that it is still there at the 'misprice'. Normally, retailers remove the item or state it is out of stock as soon as it becomes apparent that they have a problem..
(except the muppets who have them on fleabay already who hopefully will get negs  )
What they have them on ebay already!! :brickwall :cuckoo:
Ohh looky 1000th post  (about time too)
If they were going to honour the orders, i cant see them not checking everyone out to make sure they are a student/teacher, then hopefully those of us who can prove it will get them

The fact that they havent removed it, and the fact that on apple education store ireland the price is 99 euros, it *may* not be a misprice.
Cheers to the OP!
The last time I placed an order via Apples Education site it was for a Nano I-pod.
The guy on the phone checked that I had LEA Ref numbers available if needed.
Order went through no problem although, he did say that now he had approved??
my educational status I should always order through my approved account to avoid any problems in future!
I think Apple will use this to weed out persons it deems not to be entitled to place orders via Education site.
:)
Still showing on the WEB Site if this was a mis-price, it would have been taken of by now- wouldn't it. ??????
Thanks to the op for this. I have my confirmation email from Apple and from my previous experience from ordering from the Eduction store I would not be surprised if I get a knock at 7.30am tommorrow morning from DHL etc...
And if not, well it's all very exciting isn't it. :dork:
Bry...happy new year coop's and duffod.

Thanks to the OP for this, I've ordered one, not getting my hopes up, but this would be one hell of a deal if it came through.

Its gone off the site now :(
Probably run out of stock
Mark.
Well I'm a student of life and I have the scares to prove it  They can look if they want.
I've ordered 900,090 cameras to smack people over the head with when they get in my way. :cuckoo:
I might stick 100,000 on eby for free to screw with everyone else too!!
how do ya like that?

Unlikely as its still on the normal apple site. More likely that they have taken it off to fix the pricing error.

I think they should hand deliver them with a free box of chocolates and a £200 cheque to thank people for their valuable custom

Yes from what I remember of Kodak and the Working Lunch feature.
The offer on the website is know as an 'Invitation to treat' and is the same as a product being in store. You can take the item to the counter and they can decline to supply it to you at the said price because there is a mistake etc. This is the stage we are at with Apple I believe. Once the money is taken then it constitutes acceptance on the retailers part and the formation of a contract between the two parties. The retailer must now supply the item to the consumer.
Raymondin is right about the court being able to overturn on the basis of a 'mistake' but the point is it's a contract that apple themselves cant break....or at least not from my armchair knowledge of the law. I believe to do this they need to show that it was an obvious mistake (49p TV for example). £98.70 for a 5MP digital camera isnt an obvious mistake. Of course if you know your cameras then you'd know its worth a lot more but the average person could probably reasonably assume that to be a genuine price.
With regards to the money being taken - I'm not sure whether it has been taken. My available balance is showing £97.80 below my actual balance although I'm not sure whether, as with credit cards/limits, this is a case of the amount being authorised by the bank but not actually withdrawn.
Either way it's all legal technicalities and I still dont think it would come off!
Thanks to the OP by the way!

Will £200 be enough ?
Maybe Apple will give those that complain diamond encrusted platinum special edition Ipods.
