DVD burning question

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 6000, it comes with a TSST-L532B DVD+-RW burner.

I burned 1.85gig of files using a 8x DVD-R at 8x, it took roughly just under 7mins. Now I thought it would be a lot quicker than that.

Sounds about right it takes me 15 mins to burn a full dvd.

Hmm to me that sounds slow for burning at 8x
I can burn a full DVd in 15 mins at 4x speed, 8x would take about 8/9 mins i reckon
So 7 mins for 1.85gig at 8x speed sounds slow, sure it wasn't burnt at 4x, coz that sounds about right

EDIT I use an external dvd writer with USB 2 connection

Sounds a tad slow to me. A lot depends on what the files were.

When you burn at x8, the whole disk does not burn at this speed, it starts slowly and racks up as it goes, so a X8 is not twice as quick as a X4 disk

A good external x8 will burn a full disk at around 12mins laptop drives are slower so it is about right :)

Using nero 6 and burning a 4 gig ISO image.

The problem is it is taking over 1 hour to burn the disk, even with a 8x DVD disk.

now something sounds wrong but tried a few things and nothing seems to change the overall time, and for an 8x wrtiter 12 hour seems too much.

any ideas?

I've noticed that when burning it will not always burn at the speed you expect, buffer underrun protection will slow down the speed of the burn on the fly depending on CPU load. If your running some heavy CPU apps it will slow down to compensate.
