Look here... (http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/index.cgi?page=Review&id=430&story=2486)
Looks like the R2 Robocop directors cut could be a bodge job.
This review mentions layer-change type pauses whenever one of the extended scenes is shown. What a cock-up!
Any chance that this is just a test disc, and the finished article might be better?
Why couldn't MGM just put the Directors Cut on the disc on its own? It isn't that much longer is it???
Apologies if this is old news...
integrated branching eh?

sounds like non-seamless branching, MGM used this with Stigmata as well. Basically that alternative footage is placed after the movie on the disc rather than being interlaced with the movie as in the case of seamless branching.

Does anyone want to buy my Criterion for 50 English Pounds? :p
that branching comment was a bit of sarcasm btw :p
I'm gonna be keeping the criterion. Theres still quite a few places with supplies of them. Didn't really like the 2nd and 3rd anyway.

:eek: :eek: :eek:
I've just realised that both my (old) players may have a problem with this. I could not get Stigmata to play at all so there is a good chance Robocop won't. I have a new player now so hopefully it'll work on this one. (Phillips 701)
Here's hoping.:rolleyes:

Pity about this, 1 layer change during a movie is bad enough without 3 or 4. I have the Criterion edition but was still considering this (mainly for the 5.1 sound, documentary and enhanced picture) but the fact some side information is lost in the 1.85:1 crop, and this non-seamless branching, is giving me major doubts..

how big will this pause be ?
will it be longer than a layer change ?
if it isnt i wouldnt mind that much (but then maybe i will when i actually watch it !).

Looks like the region 2 will only be suitable for the average punter - with the Critereon for the true DVD connoisseur. :D
Dunno why they didn't just put the dir cut out :confused:
I thought that the two phrases
R2
and
bodge job
were pretty much synonymous anyway.
So, no surprises here, then.

It will be a slight amount of picture top and bottom that will be lost - but Paul Verhoeven would have known when shooting the film that it would be shown everywhere at 1.85:1, so the framing must work at this AR.

Actually it appears that some side information will also be lost, strangely enough.
That's exactly something I noticed but forgot to comment on - I'm going to put together a more complete gallery of screenshots ASAP so we can see if this is a problem throughout.

So let me get this straight... MGM expects people to buy a version of one of the best films ever made, with:
2 other awful films added, bringing the price to £35;
An incorrect aspect ratio that contradicts the director's intent;
7 or 8 pauses during the uncut version, that will pause at least as long as layer changes;
and flimsy paper packaging.
And unfortunately, I do not have this fabled "holy grail" miraculous Criterion version that you all seem to have :(

And I unfortunately jumped the gun and sold my Criterion disk a few weeks ago! :mad:
Maybe MGM will release a half-decent R1 or R4 SE... at any rate I won't be getting the R2 until I get a good idea of what the general consensus of its quality is.

Well the layerchange might not be on the finished version as only test review discs are available at the moment.
Also, I ve read other reviews where the branching layerchange isnt even mentioned so its possible it was a fault with the reviews player ?, or possibly it depends on how good your player is at hiding the layerchange.
Cant be no worse than SW:EP1 layer change anyways. ;)

Is the Criterion anamorphic? If not, is an anamorphic version of the film available anywhere? Otherwise i might as well dump my VHS on to double VCD and watch that instead...
