I have that 9170, good shaver although not had it long, paid less that your price though (Costco). Replaced my old 8000 series and was a definate step up.

Not sure what the wash system on the 8170 is like though, could be good but I use mine for travelling with so not practical really

As Kryten also bought thru costco, about £80 for the 9170, best shaver i've ever used.

Just to make it a little clearer, that 89 quid you are quoting is a great price, its just Costco do a yearly offer in the latest shaver for one week with a voucher which makes them a lot cheaper than anywhere else!

I'd go for the 9170 though, I really like it

Thought I'd bring thisthread backas opposedto starting a new one. I've been considering getting an electric shave for a while. After years of wet shaving, I'm pretty fed up of it.

The Philishave SmartTouch-XL HQ9170 looks goodbut want to know what's like for comfort & skin irritation and what's the closeness like before I splash out the cash?

Also how you trim sideys with round shaving heads? :suspect:  How do you get them straight and level? As with a wet shave it's easy.

You'll be very lucky to get a closer shave with an electric compared to a good wet shave. However they are quick and less hastle.

I managed to get a Remington shaver for £12 in TK Maxx the other day, not a bad model either, rechargable, can run off mains, twin foil (its the bar type), and its pretty good.

So you might like to think about getting a cheap one, before spending a fortune. Or maybe see if a friend has one you can try out?

This model has an adjuster on the sides of the heads for sensetivity and its seems to work ok for me. As for sideburns, there is a pop-out trimmer at the back :)
