View Full Version : Cleaning discs
Not sure which of the forums this should be on, but this seemed most likely.
In what high street stores can you buy the special fluid & wipes used to clean CDs? (Well, in this case DVDs but I presume they're the same).
There are one or two little glitches in my R2 'Three Colours White', and I was hoping that cleaning it might eradicate them -- although the disc does seem to have a few little scratches on it.
Would I be wasting my time, or is it worth trying?

Hi, I can't directly answer your query regarding where you can get cleaning fluid/devices for cleaning dvd's, however i do know of a company that will proffesionaly 'rebuild' the disk for you, what they do is they grind it down to the data level and then rebuild it using a special resin and device. in other words even deep gouges and melted disks can be repaired back to new. i believe there service is used mainly for video shops to repair ps2 games and dvd's. If you want any more info just drop me a mail at ditch.b@ntlworld.com
all the best

Lots of things are suitable for cleaning CD'd and DVD's; Acetone (nail varnish remover, available anywhere) will shift most things and completely evaporate afterwards, leaving no residue. Or you could try 99% pure Isopropyl-alcohol, again, excellent cleaning, no residue (this can be bought anywhere, as video head cleaners usually included a small vial of this). As for tissues, lens cleaning tissues dont scratch the surface, and are lint free, so no fibres etc on the disc, and these can be got from any optician.
HTH.
btw, don't bother with the CD cleaning tissues from Woolworths, although they contain Isopropyl-alcohol, other ingredients leave a slight residue (which vanishes after playing the disc, but they look rubbish until then ;) )
