View Full Version : Recommend software for ripping?
Used Musicmatch a couple of years ago and it was OK but now seems to be crippled (do this rarely) so is there a freeware app that's small and simple to use?
Windows Media Player 10 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en&categoryid=4) has a rip option.
I prefer Nero which can be picked up very cheap. Make sure you get the suite with the ripper.
The problem with WMP10 is it rips only in WMA format (tried last night) without an additional cost plug in. I think I must have the Nero suite without :( Thanks
MP3 encoding support is included at no cost with Windows Media Player 10. For Windows Media Player 9 Series, you can add MP3 encoding support by purchasing one of the following plug-ins:
From Here (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/mp10/getmore/plugins.aspx#MP3Create)
So it should work Tenex :)
I use WMP 10 for ripping, but I do also have Nero, so it could have loaded a plug in
Unless I'm misiing something all three are additional cost plug-ins? Looked at them last night - Cyberlink has a trial period but other than that the cheapest is $10?
I'll check out the Nero update page as in the past I've avoided all downloads except DVD ones. Thanks
My option is here, if this helps

I use Audiograbber with the LAME encoder. All free, and does the job for me.

I don't have the same options so I think I'll investigate that one, thanks.

Excellent! I love LAME though I haven't reloaded it since the last crash. Thanks

Same on mine.. :D
I have Nero 6 I have to go via the the Start Smart Icon in the start menu
Startsmart > hover over the music cleft symbol > submenu > encode > audio files.
Or Convert audio cds to Audio files.
Rgds.

Exact Audio Copy. Nothing finer. Well, there probably is, but it wouldn't do as good a job as this app. So theres nothing gooder. Well, maybe. Er.

Oh, and its free.
Media Player 10 does the job nicely for me. mp3 no probs, with nothing purchased.
CD-EX and LAME gets my vote, easy to use and just works!
iTunes has a very easy to use interface and although the default is AAC is really easy to change to default to MP3. The Garcenote interface is pretty much seamless and it will allow you to transfer all your existing songs into it's library automatically. The MP3 encoder itself is adjustable but not as good as some others.
If it's a PC (I'm asssuming it is) LAME based encoders are definately the best quality unfortunately the LAME plugin for iTunes is only currently available for Macs, it replaces the encoding engine with the one from a suitable version of lame but still retains the iTunes interface.

ditto. But can struggle with certain copyprotected cds :( - I then have to default to iTunes.

I really hate iTunes but having said that I'd be happy to pair a LAME encoder with iTunes on my iBook, thanks.
PS @ Menu
just repaired the WMP10 install and now it's as it should be!

Another EAC+LAME fan here. Seriously, DON'T use WMP, if you care about your music...
Irony. Just after asking this I received my new Zen MP3 player and yes that has a suite of software that includes a ripper. Bit like WMP though, bloatware just not as bloated.

If used right it's about the best you can get. It's the only ripper that's managed to cope with very scratched CDs, and even eventually rips some of the more stubborn copy protected CDs (though the latest Gorillaz from cd-wow is the first causing problems). It does depend on the cd drive though.
A lot of other rippers result in stutter or watery sounding MP3s.
