View Full Version : PETITION: Blockbuster and P&S DVDs

Hi all,
We don't realise how lucky we are in the UK to get WS DVDs as standard. Blockbuster and other large rental chains in the US appear to be stocking only the P&S versions of The Mummy Returns, Grinch etc., and Walmart are doing the same for the retail versions. More details here (http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#widebuster)
If it becomes common practice there, it'll start over here soon enough :(
Sign the petition (http://www.petitiononline.com/widedvd/petition.html ) !

I'll sign the petition but as long as they still release discs in both format (i see AI is also going to have a P&S disc) then i'm not too bothered. If it takes the flack off of us who appreciate OAR then it should shut up those muppets who complain about black bars etc.
EDIT: That's 2485!

I think it's a real shame that they would even consider released pan & scam discs.
Maybe walmart could also offer to cut the sides off any posters or prints these morons want to buy, remove, say 30% of the baked beans in a tin, sell CD Albums with two tracks missing and, at the deli, when they ask for 100g coleslaw, slop most of it into an 80g tub, losing the rest...

John - Maybe it would be a good idea to change the thread heading to that of a petition so more people will come into sign it.:)

"So, would you also slice 40% off a picture to fit it on your wall? Original aspect ratio is what the director intended, so to be blunt, it should bloody well be respected and distributed for those who do."
Ah but the reason they are stocking them is because the majority own 4:3 TV's and are not liking the Black Bars! Same with my Mum and Dad until I bought them a 28" Widescreen TV now they love it! (wonder why?? lol)
I myself are not bothered about the Black Bars - i'm only bothered if it's a decent film o not and have "Decent" Extra's! (
Like Shreks - nice)
It all comes down to money (more have P&S TV's so they stock more or exclusively P&S Titles - simple)
Still i'd preder ALL Widescreen DVD titles to be Anamorphic - Black Bars on a Non-Anamorphic 2:35 Title on a Widescreen TV. Argh..

You may laugh, but WalMart in the States have been known to do that with CDs. They won't sell any CDs with a PARENTAL ADVISORY sticker (but are quite happy to sell, say, "Die Hard") and so many CDs will be edited to remove any "offensive" language; because of WalMart's sales policies, "Star Me Kitten" on REM's "Automatic for the People" would have had a very different opening four letters. A Sheryl Crow CD is unavailable at WalMart due to the singer referring to their policy of selling guns.
Amusing consequences of this include occasional slip-throughs: U2's "Pop", for example, which isn't stickered, and Metallica albums with more bleeps than is legally viable.
WalMart: stores for the P&S crowd, stores for people who don't need to think.

I wonder how many signatures it would take for Blockbuster to listen? 10,000 would look very impressive, and judging by the way it's going, that could be possible within a few days.

Thanks for the original info on this - it is important to keep reminding the film companies that pan and scan is NOT wanted by what I hope is a significant number of the DVD buying public.
