View Full Version : Anyone capture Sky/Sky+ with a tv card?
If so how do you go about it?
I have some bits i would like archived from my sky+box and the £25 card i bought, gets a okish picture but no sound.....
I use the svideo output from the Sky+ box, plus the red/white audio outputs going into my soundcard line in. Seems to work OK...

Its in a different room (which our landlord thoughtfully pre-cabled with a coax socket linked to the living room) so it runs straight out on coax. Not ideal, but certainly not a bad picture and has sound too :)

I do the same as M@rtin and capture using a Hauppauge pvr-250. Top quality.
I used a pvr 250 and wasnt impressed with it....

I use a Sapphire Theatrix 550 via composite. The quality is fairly good, but would be even better with svideo from Sky+ I imagine.
I found that using a DVD recorder and then editing/archiving to the PC from the DVD disc was another way of doing it.

I've just decided to go for an xtream 7230 (search on ebay to see what it is). It cost £129.99 and lets you input\output RGB, S-Video, or composite and will input\output DV. I hope to use this to archive my Sky+ stuff to DVD using the RGB in and convert to DV. I know there will be a marginal quality loss doing this, but I'm hoping it will be better than the WinTV composite input I've been using up to now!
Will post back when I have tried it if anyone is interested.

Hmm didnt think of that, could be a good idea:) i like it......could i burn to dvd recorder then put the dvd in pc and convert to divx ?
Would be one way of getting stuff of sky and also having a great new toy...
A new pvr 250 costs around £90 i think? im sure i seen cheap dvd recorders around for that which would be more flexible....
Thanks for that idea ill have a think:D
No probs, I use it to take stuff off Sky+ and then use a few tools on the PC to bring things together and edit them down tight (eg ads etc).
It's horses for courses - I decided to use a DVD recorder as all of my kit is in a cupboard and getting a connection to the PC wasn't going to happen anyway. It also means I can set it recording, dump various programmes on it and edit away later on while deleting from Sky+ there and then.
It also means I can record something to DVD quickly for someone else to watch or keep without a load of hassle at the PC.
