Hi Peeps,

I currently have a Panasonic RV20 and a full surround sound setup in my front room (all connected to a 36" Wega). The problem is that I sometimes can't get into the front room to watch a film. Therefore, I want to pick up a second player just to watch the occasional DVD's in the back room.

The Cyberhome ADL528 is only £100 from richer sounds and it does everything I want (multi region etc). Plus it also plays VCD's and SVCD's which would be cool (if I could get them to work! Any suggestions on that one??). There are a few other options, but I don't really want to spend too much.

The Scan SC-2000 is £150 which is slightly pushing it, but it does look like a very good player. Next to that, there is the Wharfdale M5, which I don't really want to go for as I've never really liked the make.

Richer sounds are also doing the Pioneer 340/343 for £150 which is quite cheap, but it only plays DVD's. Nothing else.

What are your suggestions for a cheap (as close to £100 as poss), good performing and VCD/SVCD/MP3 playing (easily!) DVD.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I have a Wharfedale M5 and it is a very good machine. Good picture quality and lots of outputs including RGB through SCART.

I would avoid the Cyberhome ADL528 as it is supposed to be a very noisy unit. I know of a few people who have returned them because of this.

The Dansai is meant to be a bit of a bargain.

This months copy of DVD Buyer reviews most of the models in the UK (although some of the reviews are strange to say the least!)

Mark.

I had to make the same decison a few weeks ago. Opted for the M5. The cyberhome and dansai are just too cheap looking and from what I've seen on these and other forums - suspect build quality. You've got to consider how this thing is going to look in your living room/bedroom and how long you plan to keep it.

For the extra cost of say 3 DVDs your best of buying the M5. Alright it hasn't got macrovison diasbled but what the hell are you doing recording on the VHS anyway - once you've seen DVD why do you want to watch VHS?

Happy Shopping

Dansai cheap looking !!!!!!

Have you seen it . It certainly does not look cheap to me. Definately not cheaper looking than the M5.
Where do you get the suspect build quality of the Dansai from ? I haven't seen any reports yet.The same cannot be said of the M5 that had major problems with dodgy DVD drive units.

The M5 would be a good bargain if it were under £120. But it is not so good when it is selling for the same price/more expensive than players from Pioneer and Toshiba.Sampo players ( the M5' maker)are not fault free and definately have more problems than Pioneer and Tosh.
