View Full Version : If my surround's speaker cable won't reach, can I do this....?
Surrounds won't reach to the back of the room, over the door and up the wall. I know I could shelve out for more cable and that it's a good thing, but in the short term, can I cut the cables for the centre left and right (way too long) and connect them up to the surrounds with normal electrical connects. Or will I see a huge drop in sound quality?
It will work if nyou make sure you do a good job of the connections. You may notice a drop in quality but it depends on the system and cable that is being used at the moment.
If the cable is cheap thin stuff then you may not hear any nticable difference.
Just be sure that the wires don't touch (insulation tape helps) as this may damage the amp.
I know someone who solved a similar problem by finding in-line bannana plugs. He found them lying arround at work so I don't know where they can be bought.
Any more replies. Should I try, is it worth the hassle, should I fork out the cash etc?
Thanks
it depends on when you are thinking of forking out for the extra cables, if it is soon (very soon) then I wouldn't bother.
If its not gonna be for a while yet, and you want to enjoy the system over xmas then extend as you said :)
Looking at the size of the room I'd probably not reach even if I hacked about with the spare cable. I just don't want the cable to get caught up in the Xmas post. Looks like a trip to the high street.

I did exactly what you are proposing, and it sounds absolutely fine. I think you would need a very keen ear to notice a difference.
