My amp (Kenwood 5050) has a pre-sub output so I have connected the amp to the sub using this. I assume this is correct, it is the only wiring to the sub from the amp.

Now I have no idea what the other buttons on the sub mean. One of them is a switch which says "0 degrees to 180 degrees". There are 2 others buttons, one is for how loud it is (I think), the other goes on about the frequency. What does each one do, and what settings should I have them on? I looking for a nice little rumble I can feel on the couch!!

Thanks

Right, the 0/180 switch is to set the speaker "out of phase". This basically is to do with where your sub is positioned in relation to your main speakers. Usually leave it set to 0, but if the bass seems a bit wooly and non-discript, try the other setting.

The loudness one, naturally controls the volume. The Frequency should effect at what point the sub starts producing sound. If your main speakers go down to, say 100hz, you should set your sub frequency to around this level. This will let your sub carry on where your speakers run out of steam.

The best way to work this out is trial and error, but your manual should have some details on how to get the most from it. As an example, I have mine set to around 85/90 hz cutuff and about one quater volume.

Don't know what these little eltax satellites will go down to, be I bet it's not very much. Will check manual when I get home.

Hmm, I had mine up at well over half and hardly ne thing was happening.

Does connecting the pre-sub out from the amp to the sub sound like the right thing to do?

Are you sure you had the amp set to send the .1 channel to the sub?

I have the same speakers and a Yamaha A5 amp.

I have the amp set up so that all speakers are "small" and so the bass is sent to the sub.
As the amp is handling the bass management I have the frequency dial on the sub at its highest Hz setting.
The output dial is set around halfway up.
I tried the 0-180 switch in both directions and couldn't hear any difference (probably because the sats and the sub aren't competing to output low frequencies) .
I can honestly say I don't know which position I left it in.

The sub in this is the atomic a8 isnt it?.....ive got one of those and i had a kenwood 5030 amp (now got a 9050) .....ive currently got mine set at around half volume for films (needs turning up for music).....on the old 5030 i had to boost the output of the sub from the amp to around +7 for the best results. The cut off for the frequency is set to around 60Hz ...no idea what difference the phase switch makes......just have a play around and see what sounds best.....IMO boost the output to the sub on the amp for best results

HTH :)

Thanks for the input guys. I started to get some nice bass last night, actually from watching MTV through Sky digital which was a nice surprise because I honestly thought that the speakers would only work when watching dvds - silly me :)

Not all together on top of how to work the Kenwood amp, u mean that you can increase the signal/loudness from the amp to the sub?

Two conflicting opinions here....

The cut off for the frequency is set to around 60Hz

I have the frequency dial on the sub at its highest Hz setting

...one that I should have the dial all the way round, one at about half. Is it a matter of taste, I can't damage the sub in any way can I?

Andy I had mine at about 8!! Just wondering if it's me and my taste or if I have it set up incorrectly.

I've gone thru the amp speaker setup programme, is that what u mean?

Thanks again for all the advice.

To clarify...
If you set my amp so that all speakers are set to small then all the bass is sent to the subwoofer, treble and mid range are sent to the little speakers.
There is no need to block higher frequencies at the sub as the amp isn't sending them in the first place.

Andymc is quite right. In the 'small' setting all frequency handling is done by the sub, so the frequency setting should be maximum. This remains the case if all setings are large and the sub handles the LF only. Only when you feed the sub from the speaker outputs does the frequency setting become an issue. Phase and level settings are much more dependant on positioning, taste etc.

Flick through the sound menu on the amp and you can increase/decrease the level of each speaker. I think the frequency is also a matter of taste...its just that i dont like whats coming through my main speakers to come out of my sub as well, ...there tends to be a bit of a cross-over on the lower frequency between speakers
