My DVD machine is set to output RGB, I was watching a movie and decided to check the settings on the TV. I put the brightness down, contrast a bit up but when I went to change the colour it made no difference?

The colour setting has no effect on the picture it is like it has it's own setting?

Another problem I am having is that when I turn the DVD on the TV does not automatically change over to the correct channel.

um, I doubt any telly allows rgb colour change (my tosh doesn't) because the point of rgb is that the colours are defined seperatly and go to the correct gun on the tv and therefore must be correct. where as on the others svideo and composite the colour information is mixed in, and the onboard decoding might get it wrong, so they allow you to fix it.

re the channel problem, it would depend on how you connected it. try just scart from dvd to the main scart on the telly and then check it switches properly.

I have tried with only the dvd connected and it still does not work. I then decided to move my tv down and connect it to the sky digi box and that auto switches fine.

Some TVs allow colour changes for RGB sources, but most don't AFAIK, so it's probably normal for your set.

As for auto-switching - it's probably the SCART cable not having pin 8 wired, while the one with your Sky STB has it wired OK.

It's not the scart cable as it is a fully wired cable, the btech flat one that beyond hifi had on offer.

I used the same cable on both the digi box and dvd.

does it change over to the wrong AV channel, or nothing at all?

If the TV switches OK (as it's fine with the STB) and it's the same cable used both times, then that only leaves the DVD player.

If it has two SCART sockets, check that you are plugging into the one marked TV (the other one probably doesn't have auto-switching implemented)
If it's not that, then all I can suggest is that either the DVD player has a fault, it's imlpementation of auto-switching is out of spec, or it simply isn't implemented on that model at all ( or it's menu activated - but I've never heard of this method myself)

The only way to check, is to use a voltmeter on pin 8 of the cable at the TV end (with the other end plugged into the DVD as normal)

The spec says this

0V (0-2V) Normal
6V (4.5-7) auto-switch to 16/9 mode
12V (9.5-12) auto-switch to source.
