George Lucas has been talking about the eventual DVDs of the original STAR WARS trilogy, and the reason why they won't be in stores until at least 2006.
While talking to the Post Magazine, Lucas explained the difficulties involved, saying, "The first three films in the trilogy are much harder to put together as a comprehensive package like we did on EPISODE I. That's why we're spending more time on it, and it's going to take more time because we didn't shoot very much behind-the-scenes stuff, and a lot of the material that we would normally include just didn't exist in those days. This was a long time ago; before even VHS"
He adds that the restricted budgets of the original films also resulted in less deleted scenes.
May we suggest that the original theatrical versions be on the same DVDs with the newly enhanced copies. In addition, how about adding the dreaded STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL to one of the film's discs? No matter how awful it is, it is a part of the franchise's history.
