View Full Version : DVD Starter out!!! Help required from more knowledgeable rogues
Hi ya Guys,
You probs get these questions all the time but would be really grateful if any o you out there could help out.
Am lookin to get a player but have limited funds, I just want an average standard DVD player, that can be hacked and is around the £150 mark, now I've got no prior knowledge of DVDs as have never had a player etc.
But if any o you guys could recommend a good starter player with hack capability it'd be a good place for me to join your revolution! Cheers in advance for the help...
nice one

I'd go for an LG 3000E if I were you. It's cheap enough (£120ish depending where you look), a more-than capable performer and is easily hacked using the accompanying remote (including Region 4). I have one myself as an 'extra' player and I haven't had any difficulties whatsoever. Players like the Wharfedale/Proline ones are equally inexpensive, but they're associated with far too many problems and bugs to be worth considering.
To my mind, The only ESSENTIAL features on a player are:- RGB output, Multi-region capability and (of course) good quality AV performance. Even if your telly doesn't support full NTSC, you can use the LG's PAL 50 output (although it will output pure NTSC and PAL 60 if it does).
If your budget can stretch to it, I'd recommend the Toshiba 210E for about £180 online for a multi region model. It will knock spots off players worth twice as much, especially if your TV can take a component input (i.e. other Toshibas).

I'm with Brattle, if you can afford a little bit extra, go with the Tosh. Quality performer at a good price and wont need upgrading as quickly as other parts.
Welcome to the revolution :)

What about the bargain basement 'Dansai' player from Tesco's at a very reasonable 99 notes? Can be made multi region in 4 remote button presses. There is a post on this forum somewhere for more info.
