Accidentally found on ebay.........
Avalon DVD, says 2 discs full version.
But I have a feeling it's a bootleg or else VCDs.
Anybody know anything about this???

Very likely its a bootleg. Looking at the picture the 2nd disc is 'Gate to Avalon' which is a separate documentary disc that you can buy separately in Japan or as part of the 'Avalon Memorial Box' - either way to buy the film and this documentary disc will cost roughly £60+
I've seen a picture of the 'Anime Cartoon International' bootleg of Avalon and the case cover is all but identical to the Japanese version except they scrubbed out official logos with there own :( Looks like a similar situation here.

I thought you'd say that Dave..............it seemed too good to be true.
Great review by the way!

Would you recommend steering clear of this one Dave????
Definitely avoid it - taking a closer look I can recognise the Anime Cartoon International (or some derivative) Bootleg Label's Logo on the front cover, plus the seller is from Hong Kong - what more proof do you want?!
On those grounds alone (it being bootleg) i'd avoid...plus its due for a R1 release in 2002 sometime hopefully original language and uncut.

Yeah, the Hong Kong thing was what aroused my suspicions. Well confirmed them really, it was the price that raised them!!!
So Dave, do you reckon wait until next year for the Region 1 release or pay through the nose for the Japanese version, because I am dying to see this film................
Do you know anything else about the R1 release??

Thats a tough question...if you were asking me if it was worth buying the film at a regular price I would have no hesitations in recommending you give it a try. But with the high Japanese price tag it becomes a far more difficult recommendation to make because like I say in my review this film will certainly divide its viewers so paying £30 or so for the R2 is a risk....I never regretted it and I must say the film has grown on me with each viewing but it will certainly not appeal to everyone.
I don't know anything about the R1 but it has been in the pipeline for a long while now (Miramax also have rights to Oshii's forthcoming Ghost in the Shell 2) so a release in the first 6months of 2002 would be my guess...but thats all it is, a guess. I would also say the 'Gates to Avalon' documentary has a 50/50 chance of making the R1...but then there is also a chance they'll cut the film (especially if it receives a Theatrical release). All specualation of course :) hopefully Oshii has made the same deal Miyazaki did with Disney for 'No Cuts' :D
