I'm not sure how to break it to you guys, but, I think Konami have screwed up a little here.

I have been playing the 2nd demo compulsively for the last 2 weeks, and to me, the final game plays nothing like it, which is a shame as I thought it was nigh on perfect.

On initial impressions, the final game seems slower and less responsive than the demo, but I'm willing to give it a chance...scarily wary at the moment though....

LouBarlow
25-10-2005, 23:36
Having investigated further, it doesn't seem to be as non-responsive as I first thought, but the 'turning arc' seems more akin to the 1st demo i.e. not as toight.

The game seems easier too - I just won my first 5* game 3-0, whereas the demo games were more contested...hmmmmm.

Online options? 2 vs 2 etc??

LouBarlow

I'm not going online for the moment mate.

To me, this is Winning Eleven 9 in high resolution - it does not play anything like the demo's...

26-10-2005, 00:05
Hence why I avoided the demo for long sessions - just played a bit of it and was waiting on the final version and then I can't be disappointed :D

LouBarlow

It's still fantastic, don't get me wrong - can't wait to get it online, then we will know for sure just how it shapes up :D

Hmm, sounds like they went with the DEMO 1 style. At least PESFan will be pleased, they couldn't stop crying at how Konami had "turned the game back into PES4" by upping the speed a little in DEMO 2

Will give it a whirl.

damell
26-10-2005, 02:30
What the **** have they done?

They've got the sun *spit* plastered all over the sponser boards!

Not sure what you mean Lou. :D If anything I'd say the controls are even tighter than the demo version. It just seems "lighter" and with it, as you say, a bit easier. Steam rollered Arsenal 4-0 and 3-1 with Real Madrid on 3 stars, whereas on the demo I was lucky to grind out a 2-1 win.

I'm not sure if it's with having Raul upfront, but the movement seems a lot better. I kept possession a lot easier than I ever did in the demo.

All in all, first impressions are it's outstanding. Didn't think I could be anymore impressed than I have been with the demo, but it continues to surprise. Also if you look at the online tab in the settings.exe, there's a setting for UPNP enabled which is apparently what was causing all the router issues with PES4.

Great stuff!

Ono

I've only ever played the Demo 1 (apart from the PS2 version).

Looks like they have dumbed it down slightly then? Shame.

Ah man!

It looks like the online play on PC is going down the more traditional style of other online games ie. you need to login to the Konami servers with a username and password.

If I don't get the game early enough some git may swipe my online name

Hopefully you can have more than one identity and/or be able to change the game name above your head.

My main worry about the new online system is that it may not allow patched (eg Wolf patch) users to use it. Although now the kit editor is part of the game itself, at least getting the kits correct should not affect it, as it will be part of the save file.

Can't wait for Friday. I played my last PES4 game last night 'PES5-style' after playing the demo so much. I kept shooting from long range and passing little triangles, it was great fun

LouBarlow
26-10-2005, 08:16
The more I play the more I'm convinced this is a port of Winning Eleven 9 - there are animations not in the demo's that were in WE9, and it just *feels* like it to me...not that that's a bad thing, but I thought Demo2 was perfect.

It is far, far too easy though - on 5 stars and I'm playing some teams and they don't even have a single shot in the whole game...hmmmm

I haven't played WE9 so I can't compare it to that, but it doesn't feel any different to Demo 2 to me, apart from the tighter controls, which is a great thing IMO. Played 4 games now and it is definitely easier, but I wouldn't say it was dumbed down.

It's still hard to dribble, flighted through balls work once in a blue moon and some passes/first touches still go astray.

I had a few problems with both PES4 and PES5 demo using the play.com adapter. Sometimes I'd press square and it wouldn't respond for example and generally it just felt a little unresponsive.

I've now played the PES5 demo to death with the GAME adapter and haven't had a single issue with it. It feels just as responsive as the PS2 version. I wouldn't mind someone trying it to make sure I'm not imagining it, but if you're happy with your current adapter, I don't want to go wasting your money.

PESFAN.COM did an excellent patch for the PS2 and XBOX vesions of PES4, the PC version is being worked on at the moment. And looks like The Wofl is doing one too, so its all good for us.

How easy/difficult is it to produce new stadiums for PES? Always thought if a group of people went and worked on one stadium each you could soon come up with quite a collection.

Honestly though mate, I am a little disappointed.

1) The demo plays better - simple as that: it is faster, the controls are more responsive, the turning circle is more realistic - players make more life-like runs off the ball, and the opposition defends properly, whereas in the final game it seems to defend with 2 sweepers who are always back

2) The animation is better on the demo - I **** you not! When Beckham runs in the demo, it looks like Beckham - in the finished game, the players all tend to run in the same way, and it looks bizarre, especially when dribbling with the ball - it's far from fluid, and it looks like the start of the step-over move in a constant loop.

3) The goalkeepers are pants in the final game, from their behaviour, to (again) their animation, with the same style of dive being used over and over again - the demo had far more variation, and the keepers looked more realistic because of it.

4) The final game is too easy - the demo was tough on 5 stars, whereas, because the computer opposition on the final game, defend so deep, it's like a training session at times - attackers vs defenders.

5) The referees are too picky in the final game - now this could be because there are different refs, and Im guessing they act differently accordingly, but in the demo I could get away with a handful of fouls a game, whereas the final game is stop-start to the point of annoyance, and this is without holding down the tackle button all the time - Ono's matches will easily get into treble figures in terms of fouls

6) Graphical touches - now this one I'm not sure on, but I swear the player models, i.e. the faces and what-not, looked far better in the demo - also the netting on the goals was beautifully rendered on the demo - here it looks like a slightly improved PS2 version.

I know a lot of the above points border on the :dork: but I can honestly say, hand on heart, that the game does not play as well as the demo. All the above points point to it being a total port of WE9 PS2, as it also had the same flaws - still a great game, but I am a little gutted after the beauty that was demo #2 :(

Still damell doesn't notice it, and even prefers the final game, so it could just come down to personal taste

Well, just had a few games finally on it - played 3 games with 2 wins and a loss. Best win was with mighty Peleponnisos of course :D

Keepers though are a worry - spilling easy shots all over the place and pretty much being totally useless :suspect:

It better do, I'm on my 3rd and final warning with my ISP for spreading viruses because of having DMZ enabled. Can't say I've seen any bad keeping in all my games.

I'm on 5 star now, it's tougher but the CPU don't create enough chances for my liking. Still no doubt Master League will still be tough and other than that I'll only be playing online so it should be good.

My copy of Rome:TW which was shipped at 6pm on Tuesday has just arrived to my work address.

can someone give me the lowdown on the online play for the PC version. As i've said in other threads I just cannot seem to get a decent game using the PS2/Xbox online. Maybe im expecting it to run exactly like it would if I was playing offline, but its certainly not anything like that.

Im not sure if its my router/ethernet cable and its pretty frustrating. Ive got the PC game on its way as well and i gather from previous posts its a much smoother online game than the xbox (well PES4 was so hopefully this will be the same for PES5).

Is it easy to setup? And what on earth is this DMZ!?

Art Vanderlay
27-10-2005, 09:53
I'm sure someone will give you the full lowdown once the game arrives.

In PES4, it was direct IP connection. One user was the host, the other the client. The Host has a perfect experience, although some who play single player a lot insist it has a slightly different feel online. The client experience would vary depending on how good both your connections are, but it was essential for both users to turn off all downloads, and any other users connected trhough the same router. Even at best, a client would be disadvataged, hence it was considered playing 'Away'. Dribbling is more difficult, as were free kicks. You had to alter your style slightly for 'away' games. After a few seasons, 95%+ of players had reached a point where clienting was acceptable with their connection.

At worst, a client will have players with jerky movement, where they will suddenly skip 10 yard forward, or a goal will go in without you knowing about it. This normally means someone has a fundamental problem. Or they have turned on their downloads because they are hosting and losing :nono: - that never happens here, but is rife on PESOnline, and I expect with the rankings on the new PES. If you stick to playing against us lot you will be fine

A DMZ is a demiliatarized zone on a router. If you were unable to get port forwarding to work, then it was necessary to put your PC into the DMZ when playing as a host. This means that it is unprotected from the outside world, although you can still run a software firewall in most cases.

Whatever happens, it will not be the same as the offline game. You have to accept that it won't be quite as 'instant' as playing a mate in the same room. Quite what is an acceptable difference varies from person to person. I rarely play it offline, so it makes no odds to me

Where are the fans? No excuse for their absence on the PC version surely??

Pretty poor - surely that would have been an easy thing for Konami to correct in the PC version as it was only removed to fix slowdown on the PS2 :brickwall

Also noticed that 'The Sun' (spit) adverts are even displayed at Anfield

Not quite seeing that happening in real life Konami! :D

Had a cracking game against Juve before against 5 star CPU - got slapped down 3-0 with a stunning Del Piero direck FK, an insane chip from ASD again and then another quality finish from Zlatan in injury time. Not used to the CPU scoring spectacular strikes so its really good to see them in PES 5

Sweet Jesus!

Well, first impressions.

It's nothing like the demo for a start - nothing at all.

Graphically it's a step back from the demo (far more like PES4), and the crowd is non-existant. BUT I can run in in full screen at 1280x1024 so this is a bonus. And it does look rather nice on my 42 inch plasma.

I have only played online - two games with Hornsteve9Jr.

And so enjoyable. I've had some good games on PES4 but nothing as good as these. It's amazing how different it is, but how subtle those differences are.

This suits my game much more, as Hornsteve 9Jr was kind enough to say.

We played one game Liverpool v. Liverpool and it was 0-0. But both of us hit the woodwork several times.

Second game we played Chelsea (him) v. Barcelona (me). He scored a penalty to go one up, and I scored a 30 yard screamer (never done THAT in PES4) to go level. he pulled two ahead with two sublime goals (including a beauty from outside the area curled in by Crespo), and then I pulled a beauty back, springing the offside and slotting one in off the post.

So 3-2 to him but the games were so enjoyable and so realistic.

referee seemed less finickity than in the demo version. he pulls up fouls - but no-one got booked in two games.

The animation is great, and the little tricks you can do are sublime.

A huge, massive  from me!

And thanks HornsteveJr

Oh, and by the way. No lag for him, and just a tiny bit for me in the last half of the second game.

other than that - smooth as.

Cockeye

great - fancy a game then? :lol

But seriously, gotta go offline for a bit now.

I have found (in relation to scoring) that Liverpool strikers can't hit a barn door at ten paces. Another chalk up for the realism factor.

Played bigjonny and had about 8 shots, not one on target!

Think you have to be playing someone at the time to add them - or maybe you have an anti C0ckeye filter on your friends list! :)

Just had my first game and won 2-0 against a stranger.

Game is certainly slower than the demo when it is online. Not over convinced yet - but I'm sure I'll get use to it.

Really do not like the lobby at the moment too. Just not as easy as MSN IP input. Each match requires setting up a room which is a pain.

Still, it's only the first game.

You are missing the point of PES 5 tho mate :D

PES 5 is all about passing. Try passing in triangles and the like, try to make space and suddenly it becomes absolutley fantastic and so satisfying when moves come off.

I much prefer it to PES 4 already :notworthy

EDIT

Forgot to say - I agree it IS really difficult just to run past people a la PES 4, but for me it makes it so much better. You can round people, but it needs shimmys and the like, which for me is damn realistic :D

How can you not love this game? It makes PES4 look like FIFA95, really.

Everyone was crying out for a lobby system and now it's in (and pretty decent I have to say), you're still not happy. :D

2 great games against people with green connections and it was pretty smooth both times. Looks like the server is down at the moment though?

Well, just finished my first online session and I am in total awe of this - its utterly sensational online. The game plays so much better with a human opponent compared to the somewhat sterile CPU play. Had a quality game against Tequila and even though I lost 3-1 - it didn't feel bad at all. Some of the finishes you see now are just great to see - even if its against yourself.

Scored an absolute fantastic goal with the Reds just before - cracking cross from Riise to an unmarked Luis Garcia. He did a cracking little layoff pass to Cisse who was stood around 5 yards away who just first time, side foot volleyed it into the bottom corner past a hapless Van Der Saar - I was just drooling at it cos you just didn't have any chance in hell of scoring a goal like that on Pro Evo 4 ever :D

Lag is no issue at all and the default 3-0 win whenever someone quits is pretty good as well

Well just played my first games of PES5 and maybe I chose a bad place to start playing Tequila. I didn't embarass myself though. I think the scores were 1-0, 2-0, 2-1 and finally 1-1 with me winning on pens  (actually I think there was another win to Tequila which I missed out - another 2-0 maybe).

Anyone now to see if I can play someone I might actually be able to beat. Having realy trouble scoring so far.

Like the fact that you can play without putting the router in dmz and closing down firewalls etc. Also like the fact that you can chage camera settings etc in the games - replays don't seem quite as bad either. The chat is a bit annoying though having to press r2 all the time.

Same here with Tequila - far more even game than our latter PES4 games. It seems the CPU is not as stupid defending this time (though, as Big T saw, GKs can still be a total calamity :| )

I was a bit worried when I didn't enjoy my first couple of games much.

But after a few games I started to enjoy it, and it does feel more 'real' than PES4. OK, cutbacks still count for a few goals, but generally it is a genuine 2 on 1 situation, rather than the centre half going walkabouts for no reason.

Only time will tell whether it stands the test of time as well as PES4. But the first few months will be great fun, at the very least.

Seems there is only really one person moaning about PES5! ;)

Just finished three good games against PJG.

First I won 3-0, second he won 2-0 and then I scraped the decider with a 1-0 win! Lucky, though.

One worry is that most of my goals seem to come from the same method - but it only seems to work with Liverpool. When playing with other teams I tend to score in a different way which is interesting.

My record now reads (without my two games against babyj this morning because that was using a different nick).

P10 Won 4 Drawn 2 Lost 4

Puts me way below the rest of you in the rankings. Oh, well. better get used to my rightful place early!

Only three losses in ten now with the mighty European Champions.

I'm not filtering my opponents either so I must just get lucky with who I play.

Some bad tempered so and so's on there though.

just played someone, went 2-0 up within five minutes og game time so he just quit on me. Second time that's happened.

And i was looking forward to the shooting practice - I need it!

Great thing happened earlier though. Alonso went down and was writing on the ground in agony. Opponenet came running up the pitch and simply went round him and burst through on goal. I was about launch a stream of invective in his direction (shame we have no mic) when the linesman frantically signalled, and the ref blew up so that Alonso could be substituted! Just as he was about to score!

I played the biggest loser ever yesterday - I totally shredded him in the first half playwise but was only 3-0 at HT. But to try and avoid himself a Quit/3-0 defeat, he stopped controlling his players so everytime he kicked off, had a GK, a FK etc , I'd have to wait till the game timed out his attempt and it automatically too the attempt itself. I was utterly determined to keep going and earn me that 3-0 win. I was 8-0 up with 10 mins to go (the game took about 25 mins in total cos of the stoppages! :D ) but he eventually cracked, quit like a little whiny loser and took the disconnect against his name. His name is ARSENALHENRY14 - he is now blocked by me ;)
