I managed to get a copy of PES4 on the PC and took it away with me on holiday (sad I know :dork: ) to play on the laptop. Was most impressed! I have found a reasonable difference in the playing of both.

Subsequently I have been considering buying PES5 for PC as well as Xbox and was wondering if all you guys who have experience of both could tell me what the relative merits of each format are and, ultimately, if it is worth getting both.

I know that Matt.Wild has said he finds a fair difference and doesn't like to overlap his fixtures.

PC version is only £17.99 so it wouldn't be a great loss I suppose but I'm interested in your comments.

OK, not as biased an opinion as you may think here.

Bought Live kit, Magicbox converter and PES 4 last year for PES 4 on the XBox. Played it. Was laggy but OK for a PES online game.

Bought PC version. Had loads of trouble getting it to work with my router. Got it to work. The most wonderful thing to happen to gaming in recent times. Spent more time on it than all other games put together this year.

Sold PES 4 on XB, Sold Live kit and unused annual sub. Sold Magicbox.

Still playing and enjoying PES 4 almost a year on.

IMHO there is absolutely NO COMPETITION between the 2 (or 3) versions. Once you play it on the PC your eyes will bleed going back to the console versions. :D

/waits for flames.

To caveat the above, if you have time to play both then play both :D

Totally agree.

yes, it can be a bitch getting it to work with a router. But honestly, I played the PC version first and then bought the XBox version. I played it once online. the graphics were awful, the lag was unbearable.

PC all the way baby. And I normaly am not an advocate of PC gaming.

I will also add another caveat. I haven't played the fulll version of PES 5 on PC yet so it could well be gash :D

Have to agree with Ono, the PC version looks so much better than the XBOX version. But then it should because of the increased resolution.

I'd say the gameplay in the xbox version is faster but this makes it feel more arcadey whereas on the PC its more like a simulation with time to plan your moves. On the xbox matches seem to be a more hurried affair.

I enjoy playing both versions, but the PC is by far the best.

EDIT - Since the XBOX live patch for PES4, the lag is no worse than the PC version. I rarely have a laggy game on either.

Pes4 on the Xbox is good, as I get to play other players. However, I use a converter so I can use a PS2 pad on my XBox and it is not great which does affect my game. The lag is no worse on the XBox than the PC imo, however, you do get the best lag free games on the PC.
PC is also good as you can play and listed to the TV, which will hopefully be the case for my XBox when I can get a decent XBox to VGA adaptor.
Also, I find messenger with the PC leagues makes it easier to arrange games.

Yeah, with PES4 at least, I didn't like to overlap fixtures. Biggest reason is how players defend. On the xbox its much easier just to run straight past people if you are not careful and even then, defensive formations for some reason don't really work that well in comparison to the PC.

Controlwise, lag is worse on the PC but features in both at time (TBH its how PES is, its there a bit offline IMO) and the same button presses in the differently eg if you press the high pass button on the PC it will do a lofted ball to a player in that direction, if you do the same on the xbox your player just whacks it as far as he can at that angle

I have gone for them both :D

Anyone played PES4 online with the PC through a wireless broadband connection? Is it even more stuttery than if you were patched in with a CAT5?

Finding the PES5 demo quite playable on the laptop, at low or medium visual settings. Which is nice. But yeah, having the Xbox version means swapping controllers which could prove mind-numbing.

Never found it a problem here :p

In theory it shouldn't be, as assuming your ADSL line is 2Mb/s or less, then the ADSL connection will be the bottleneck.

Unless your wireless is 802.11b running at 11Mb, and you have a very poor connection to the router so it is running at a much slower pace

Wow. Just played the PC demo and its totally blown me away.

I've been playing PES 4 and 5 on the Xbox for a wee while now. Not put enough hours in to get good, but I've spent a fair amount of time playing them, so i feel like I know them quite well.

So, the PC version with a PS2 controller. OK, so its only the demo version, but its a completely different proposition.

The graphics are amazing. What a massive difference compared to the Xbox. Playing at 1024 * 768, the detail on the players, ball, stadium, pitch is amazing. Like comparing night with day and really nice. I know that graphics are second to playability, but its a nice bonus being able to have both. The presentation might not be up to Fifa standards, but the player animations are so realistic and are finally done justice when you can make them out so clearly.

Playing on a monitor does take a bit of getting used to, but I think the quality of the graphics more than makes up for it.

The gameplay was a bit of a shock. It really does feel different. The pace seems slower and it feels like more of a sim. Even the way the ball bounces feels different. Or am I just imagining it? I've read it in this thread but I wasn't ready to actually see it and feel it being different.

The new controller is taking some getting used to, but I think its going to be easier with the 4 shoulder buttons. The one criticism of the Xbox controller for me is having to use the black button for certain moves.

I really can't wait til Friday now to get my hands on the real thing. I really am surprised by just how good PES on the PC is, I never thought for a minute it would be so different from the console versions.

Thanks to Mr Ono for suggesting I give it a go :-)

You're not imagining it. It is slower, something I put down to the refresh rate (Like 50hz is faster than 60hz on the PS2). The graphics blew me away too when I first played it, considering it's just a port of the console versions, it does look amazing.

A pleasure.

The PS2 pad is the only way to play PES IMHO. People who use and like the XB pad are freaks :D

Only downside is that in 11 months of PES 4 I have gone through 4 dual shock pads

Only have the current one and 2 more sealed ones for PES 5 then I'm going to have to buy more  ;)

The black and white buttons make the xbox controller difficult. The 360 controller will help though.

The PS2 controller is taking a bit of getting used to as I prefer the analogue sticks on the Xbox one. But the shoulder buttons are making a huge difference.

xbox pad is for the big boys. playstation pad = wee laddies pad for a wee laddies console.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have both, and tbh only really played the PC one since i got both.

fired up my xbox one today, and had a quick single player game, and it feels like i am on ice skates vs the pc one, lot faster and less control, more like pin ball than football.

then i tried live, could i get a quickmatch with anybody ? could i hell. . .

so for me the pc is the way to go. . .

Since the PES series went multi-format i've made a point of buying it on each console i own to see which i prefer the most.

Ive always been a Playstation man, probably as it was on the PSOne i discovered ISS Pro game back in 1998. Then came ISS Pro 98 and i was hooked ever since.

I had PES4 on the PS2 and Xbox but despite the (disappointing) online option i got rid of the xbox game as there was noway i could play a watered down version of the game i played so much, it just didnt feel like Pro Evo to me.

When PES5 was released i bought the PS2 game whilst a mate got the xbox one. Again the xbox version paled into comparison. However after playing the PS2 version online i was again disappointed as it was an awful experience. For some reason i thought i would give the PC game a go as i had never considered it before as my PC/Desk setup isnt the most ergonomical to use. Whilst i feel the single player game doesnt feel quite as good as the PS2 game, the online aspect more than makes up for it. I never realised how much better it would be than the console versions.

So overall i would rate the PS2 and PC games about the same with both having advantages over the other (although the PC may move into pole position when i save up enough for a big LCD.

yeah, I like the Xbox version but players are a bit thin on the ground. Think I'm gonna get me some PC loveliness now.

Just wondering how the guys are finding it who went back to the Xbox version recently after giving up on the PC one?

With the 360 out this week, the controller will obviously be more suited to PES thanks to the extra shoulder "buttons" alongside the triggers. Just interested to see how it is going as the PC one is driving me to despair!

Only The Prof has given up on the PC version AFAIK and that wss due to his PC having lag issues.

You can play the xbox version on the 360. That is one of the backwards compatible games. But for a "full" 360 version, I think you'll be waiting till PES6.
