View Full Version : Will I need a new PSU for my gf 6800? (I have 300w)
Hi,
I decided to buy a geforce 6800, the problem is I only have a 300W PSU so I will surely need a new PSU.
I have 2 hdds and a dvdrw, do you think my PSU will be sufficient or will I need a new one?
edit: new question
strange statement there saber.
already spent loads on a gfx card, so i want a cheap power supply to run it?
not the right thinking at all.
get the best you can afford. Antec, Tagan, OCZ, Enermax, Seasonic are all tops.
however, i have never used one but, i hear the Hiper psu's are decent and cheap.

Hiper PSu is great, good price and good quality too with stable rails.
Getting a crap PSU will come back and bite you in the backside, or your computer's insides.

I understand that but I was only planning on keeping this PC for another year. What kind of wattage do you think I should go for? I guess I can spend upto £50 but I don't really want to go any more.

£50, you can get Tagan or enermax for that, or Hiper. But do not go near Qtech if that's where you are heading.
Ok I went for a Hiper HPU-4S525 Dual Fan 525W ATX2.2 PSU
I would like a neon light in mine but never mind hehe.
I have replaced every part in a PC except a PSU before so I don't know what to expect, also will I have to go into the BIOS and change some things?

525 don't have the blue light afaik
Only the blue version 580W Type R model with modular cabling has the blue light. The black version has no light.
The PSU is a straight swap, i did mine within 30 mins.
Get an Antec Truepower 2.0
I ordered a new PSU but it was out of stock so they are sending the card along without it. Do you think my 300w PSU will be enough or should I still go ahead and order a new one?
If I do get a new one I was thinking "ANTEC PSU/TrueBlue 480PGB 480W ATX12V PSU with BLUE LED Fan" would be good at £53.39 or maybe for £1 more I should get a "ANTEC NEOPOWER 480 WATT POWER SUPPLY ATX V2.0 24PIN UK"?
I really don't know much about PSUs so I am confused but all these different things, as long as it works with PC I will be happy, I think the gf6800 needs an external molex connector (whatever that is) so is that standard on all PSUs?

Yeah, it's just one of the plugs that you normally connect to the drives.

Either of those Antec PSU's will be just fine, but the Neopower has the cable managment system and is definitely worth the extra £1. The neopower is also quieter with a single 120mm fan instead of the dual ones.
The Molex connector for the Graphics card is different to the ones used on the drives but the card should come with an adapter !
I am guessing that your motherboard is an older one that doesn't need ATX 2, but useful to have the more future proof PSU. However you may need a 24 to 20 pin converter to get power to the motherboard - afew quid extra.
