View Full Version : Ipod Mini or Nano?
So which is better the Mini or the Nano?
I chose nano because
a) it's smaller
b) it's solid state -whereas the mini has a miniature hard drive - and I isuspect solid state will be more reliable and/or less likely to skip
but, it's more expensive.

Hasnt the nano effectivly replaced the mini?
The Mini is still available in some places, was wondering as Ipods generally have a bug of one sort or another whether the mini 2nd gen would be better than the 1st gen Nano?

Yes. From what I understand any mini's still being sold are old stock. I have a Nano (and a 40gb G3 & a shuffle!) and would deffo recommend paying the extra for it ;) Gitcha self a decent case though!

Ya, only badpoint of the nano is its easy to scratch the screen.
Mini is a bit more bombproof (aluminum case), but is not as "mini" as it once was, now the nano is around. The nano is not quite as good value memory-wise, but then it is teeny tiny and solid-state.
The latest spiel from Currys sales staff about the nano (which they have no stock of), is that the flash memory "wears out quicker", whereas the mini (which they have lots of left-over stock of) is a lot more reliable. Of course.
The scratching issue on the nano, at worst, is down to a dodgy batch, and is proving to be a big fuss over nothing. There a lot more satisfied (and less vocal) nano owners out there. I would recommend any ipod or nano owner to buy a case anyway, as it protects it from most types of damage. Anyone I know who has had an iPod for any length of time, has scratches and dents on it, as with any other portable device.
It's not rocket-science, small plastic item getting punted around town in your pocket will get a bit of wear and tear over time.
In conclusion, buy a nano. The ladies love it.

Technicaly true, flash memory only has a life of a couple of million write cycles. so just dont change your playlist to often eh. ...
The hard drive with moving parts is a lot more prone to failure than solid state so yet again Currys are talking through their *****. The click wheels on 4G and mini also seem to be a lot more prone to failure due to moisture ingress than the new Apple designed ones in the 5G and nano, I've had 2 replacements in a year, now have a cover for the clickwheel too.
Got the wife a mini 6GB in August (already got my own 40GB 4G and shuffle) it's pretty nice but no where near as small as the nano. It is 2GB larger than the largest nano but if you need that much capacity the 30GB 5G is only about £30 more anyway...
If I were buying a small player at the moment i'd go nano not mini but as they're not (yet) available in Pink the wife's glad she got the mini!
I had a play around with an ipod nano before, and it was great. I have a 40 gig 3g at the minute and think its time for an upgrade to a colour screen model at the least. Might get the missus a nano for xmas. (then palm mine of on her ;) )

If I were to get the bigger size Nano, might as well get the smaller size Ipod Video. The price is about £50 but you get a LOT more room and more features.

Nano all the way!
The Nano is the sexiest piece of technology I own!
Anybody recommend where to get a Nano case

www.overlayplus.co.uk sell protectors for the nano. I've got one and it's the best solution i've seen. doesn't add to size, protects surfaces and doesn't obscure the view.
