View Full Version : Why do people think Cannibal Holocaust is a good film?

I'm baffled. I thought it was a dull, bland film, very unconvincing and silly, notably the three rape scenes which are more comical than disturbing. I did see the uncut EC edition BTW.

It's revered by some horror fans, so who likes it, and why?

Dull and bland is certainly not a description ive ever heard laid at Cannibal Holocausts door before!!
The most gruelling, reprehensible.disturbing film Ive ever scene, and one that is both brilliantly and convincingly portrayed. The sexual violence and animal mutilation are some of the most extreme scenes ever laid down on film.
Did you see the recent British release,by any chance, which is shorn of over 7 minutes?
If you saw the uncut release and felt that way,you are made of sterner stuff than me!!

I don't understand those who want to see such films, but i'm biased as i have never liked horror of any sort.Give me an old classic,be it war, comedy, etc, but no horror thanks.Talking of classics,'Topkapi',and 'Inherit the Wind' have just been released. :)

I've not seen it personally, but supposedly "media-as-exploiter" was the strongest subtext, but now it's nothing Chris Morris hasn't done with infinitely more skill, precision and sheer entertainment value.

Fellow Chris-tians,

there's some doubt as to whether Morris has anything to do with this.

Is this film actually out UNCUT? Saw a dodgy copy a few years ago which had various scenes in, but don't know how uncut it was - sure it was supposed to be.

Xenole, this has been out uncut on DVD for a good while now! A few different companies have released it, but for just now your best bet would be the EC Entertainment version.

I have the original EC release, but it has now been remastered by EC, with an anamorphic picture. Extras include an interview with the director by his son.

Grindhouse Releasing (who done the Cannibal Ferox Special Edit), are working on Cannibal Holocaust just now, so it might be worth the waiting for that version.

You can find more info at www.cannibalholocaust.net

i just gave a friend his (uncut) cannibal holocaust dvd back today. i have to say that i didnt find it that bad either. yeah there were some gross scenes but i guess i'm used to seeing gross stuff on screen. first time i saw brain dead when i was 10 ish affected me more and not much then. i also thought that the film wasn't that entertaining either. give me hellraiser anyday. (none after 3 though - they suck!)

See, this is where I'm missing something. I thought the sexual violence was too phoney looking to be taken seriously. I not really bothered by the animal killing, but any claims of it being for the purposes of realism ring peculiarly against the daft looking softcore bump and grime. You can kill animals for real, but not get your actors to have sex for real?
